OK, so this may not warrant a diary, but IMHO, ANYTHING about General Clark deserves a diary... (Yes, I happen to love the guy...)
I am still amazed that during the primaries, die-hard Democrats were so focussed on the trees instead of the forest that they missed the chance to have this guy be the nominee. I'm still convinced Clark would have won. Why? Three reasons:
- Democrats would all vote for him (by default whether they liked him or not. That would have been the case with ANY nominee...)
- Independents would vote for him because he wasn't part of the "establishment", didn't "sound" like a smarmy politician, he seemed human and he has a moderate stance; and finally, MOST IMPORTANTLY,
- Republicans would have voted for him! He's a General for God's sake! The military background alone would have taken Republican votes away from Bush....
But, what's done is done. He didn't get nominated and now he is prepping himself for 2008.
When I first heard he was hired by Fox News to act as a commentator, I though, "Oh no! What are you doing? Why associate yourself with that drivel?" But I watched him last night after Dubya's speech and, quite simply, he was awesome. Here's the link to the video if you'd like to see for yourself.
I tried for a moment to pretend I was a die-hard Republican watching Fox (what a challenge!), and tried to figure out what I'd think of General Clark. And guess what, dollars to doughnuts, I'd like the guy! Then I clued in to what Clark is up to... He's getting the Republican swing vote used to him. He can talk their language, he's a General, he's handsome and if he is the 2008 nominee, he'll get votes from Republicans. No problem.
So, in terms of prepping himself for winning the general election, my statement stands: He's brilliant!
But in terms of prepping himself to win the nomination, well, hopefully something will transpire in the next couple of years to ensure those die-hard Democrats wake up and smell the coffee so they see that this is the guy to take back the White House for them.
That's all, thanks for reading my rant!
