I haven't seen any diaries or comments on this theory, but if I've missed one please let me know.
My first thought upon hearing the news this morning was not of the G8 summit, but of yesterday's announcement that London had won the 2012 Olympics.
Perhaps, my girlfriend and I both thought, terrorists had plans in place to attack whichever city won. If the IOC vote went differently, might we have heard of attacks in Paris or Madrid or New York?

Of course, it could be that they had planned to attack London to protest Britain's involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq, as stated in the
unverified claim of responsibility, and the timing was simply advantageous, when all eyes were on London from the Olympic announcement and the G8 summit.
What do you all think? Does it have anything to do with the Olympics? Or is it just coincidence? What does it mean for those 2012 games? Obviously, security would have been of paramount importance anyway, but does this morning's attack change anything in organizers' minds?
