Update [2005-8-7 19:40:23 by kant]: See update about Jehl and Miller backstory from Emptywheel below the fold.
Arianna has the goods.
Seems Doug Jehl is earning his money as an investgative reporter for the Times. He's got the Times editors finally asking whether Judy is protecting a source or protecting herself against self-incrimination. Over the next couple of weeks, we should see the article that poses the tough questions to Ms. Miller and Mr. Libby, either in the Times or elsewhere in the MSM.
Now the race is on between Judy testifying and Bush's buddy McCallum executing another Saturday night massacre
By the way, for all of you prosecutors out there, doesn't the Grand Jury (independent of Fitzgerald) have some say about when and if they indict anyone?
See below for choice graph...
A well-connected media source e-mailed to say that the most interesting development on the Miller story is coming from inside the Times: "I gather that Doug Jehl, who is a dogged and respected reporter, has been assigned to do an in-house investigative report for the Times and that he is already cutting pretty close to the bone. Several editors he has spoken to are now asking themselves why there wasn't more questioning of whether Miller's silence reflects a fear of incriminating herself rather than betraying a source. I predict this will start to unravel in the next couple of weeks -- if only because the Times is afraid of getting scooped again by outside rivals." A different source within the Times confirmed that Jehl is indeed on the story, having been given the assignment not from New York but from the paper's Washington bureau. And the Plamegate story he filed last week shows that he isn't afraid to step on the toes of his bosses. Stay tuned.

Here's a post I did on Doug Jehl and Judy. It's worth knowing that they've got a history.
Remember who Judy burned a source by inventing a quote and then using the source's name without permission? Well, Jehl was co-bylined on that article, but the errata didn't specify which journalist had broken Rule 1 of journalism. And since Jehl, and the source, were in DC and Judy was in Baghdad, it looked like Jehl was the one who burned his source.
Also, Jehl wrote a couple of the first articles at NYT backing off of Judy's shitty reporting.
Finally, Jehl has asked Keller publicly to make a public apology for Miller's reporting.
So I suspect Jehl will be enjoying his job in the next few weeks.
Enjoy his job, indeed.
