I fear Republicans are going to set a wedge with immigration in time for the 2006 elections, as Howard Dean has predicted. With no popular issue to run on, immigration reform is going to be a crucial election vote getter for them to run on, similar to gay marriage in 2004.
How should Democrats handle this issue? I think it would be a mistake if we allow the Republicans to gain the upper hand by framing it on their terms.
Alas, I hardly see Democrats discussing immigration on the blogs.
