As we attempt to deal with the devastation of Katrina and the deathly incompetence of Bush and the willfull disregard for the lives and safety of Americans by his administration, we can't avoid noting that he has gotten itself stranded on a rooftop of his own making.
The official positions of the Bush Adm. are that Baghad has been made safe, while New Orleans has yet to be made safe from the ravages of storm, disease, malnutrition, crime, and post-storm chaos.
This is a powerful and unprecedented moment. One's tempted to say only that Bush lost his bet that he could shortchange domestic protection to press his misguided, tragic invasion and occupation of Iraq.
But he was gambling with the lives of Americans, overseas and at home. At a time like this, while we watch in horror as Americans suffer in New Orleans, we can hardly gloat about Bush's loss of political capital.
We can and should, however, immediately make the case of his incompetence and his cavalier, almost psychotic attitude towards the suffering of others outside his class.
This time, Bush can't hide the body bags. Maybe it's better to say, Bush himself can't hide from them.
