There is a basic principal in any addictive behavior that the addicted person has enablers. Namely, those who assist the addicted person to continue in the destructive behavior. With respect to Mr. Bush and his Administration, the addicitve behavior is lying. The Administration lied to get into office, lied to thwart their enemies, lied to reduce the effectiveness of government, lied to justify a war, and now they are lying to divert blame for the most recent snafu vis a vis Swamp Bush (nee New Orleans).
Certainly, the Administration is to blame for these lies, but they have had accomplices. Namely, the press who hasn't done their job in pointing them out. Most recently, the Washington Post and Newsweek printed lies spewed by the Administation that the Governor of Louisiana had not sought Federal relief prior to Katrina landing, which turns out to be demonstrably false and easily debunked - and yet the story was printed. (One wonders why the press doesn't stop talking to the White House, other than they are either just stupid, partisan or lazy.)
His supporters have also enabled him to continue in his lies. If recent polls are to be believed, he still has supporters who believe that the Administration has done a good job with respect to Katrina, Iraq, the budget, etc. They allow the lies to continue.
Now, I'm not naive to think that President's and Government always tells the truth - there may be times when lying has to be done - but the degree, frequency and reasons for it have finally caught up with this Administation. Unfortunately, the fib wasn't about a blowjob, it finally caught up with us - there might be 10,000 dead!
Even as a child, we were all taught that lying doesn't pay. We may not know the effect the lie will have, but most of us would agree that somehow it is likley to blow up in the liar's faces. The lie with Mr. Bush is that the Federal Government can do things on the cheap. It is a lie to think we can win a war on the cheap. It is a lie to think we can protect Americans on the cheap. It is a lie to think we can improve the infrastructure of this country on the cheap. And it is a lie to assert that he is competent. The lying has to stop. The press needs to get off their fat asses and start confronting the lies - I had my hopes watching Anderson Cooper but then I see the Washington Post and Newsweek.
Further, those who support Bush had better start realizing that their community could be next. There is nothing unique about New Orleans. They got hit with a disaster. What if it had been something in your community? A nuclear power plant, a dam, a chemical plant, an oil refinery, an airport, a subway, etc. Well, I could go on, but the truth of the matter is that lying resulted in many of the 10,000 deaths and it has to stop.
