I've heard report after report after report of armed police and sheriffs refusing to allow people to evacuate NOLA on foot. In other words, condemning people to suffer and in some cases die because of bureaucratic bullshit.
The far right finally convinced me that its time for the left to rethink gun control. Let's stop fucking around and arm ourselves.
Here's why: without firearms in the hands of citizens, the government in times of disaster can simply relegate its citizens to death camps. Places like the the NOLA Convention Center, or the Superdome, or wherever else is convenient so that the citizens will die.
In the olden days, this sort of action was known as "oppression."
However, if the citizens are armed, then there is the chance -- not the certainty, but the chance --that the citizens will be able to protect themselves from arbitrary decisions by the government. And thus, rather than allowing the government to decide their fate, the citizens can take steps to protect themselves.
I think everyone who can should buy firearms, learn to use them, and be prepared to use them to protect themselves in times of national emergency. Without this counterbalance, we will likely see replays of NOLA throughout our lives.
I was wrong about gun control, and I give up. I apologize to everyone who I ever disagreed with.
