UPDATED: The World Can't Wait -- Nov 2nd Vigils

Mon Oct 17, 2005 at 09:26:56 AM PDT

Want another visible, tangible way to continue protesting the war and the current administration's illegal and immoral tactics?

Join the World Can't Wait vigils on Nov. 2nd.

World Can't Wait4

They've occupied ground in Lafayette Park opposite the White House and are spreading the word.  Pictures and more commentary about 'The World Can't Wait' are posted on the Democracy Cell Project blog.

Update [2005-10-17 14:14:51 by dwahzon]: The DCP posted this effort, in part, because we were asked to do so and we do agree with the goal.

KarenDC just called and said that she was going to go over to Lafayette Park and ask the leaders there your questions. She said that they were good questions and deserved answers.

Please add any other questions below. I'll let you know what she hears.

The World Can't Wait mission is organizing people living in the United States to take responsibility to stop the whole disastrous course led by the Bush administration. They seek to create a political situation where the Bush administration's program is repudiated, where Bush himself is driven from office, and where the whole direction he has been taking U.S. society is reversed.

They seek to mobilize millions to express their outrage, to speak the truth, to act with urgency and form an organized political resistance.

Now there's only 16 days till the beginning of the end of the Bush administration!

  •  I'm down with the goal, but (none / 0)

exactly WHAT are they proposing we do?  Gather in the  streets to commiserate?  What good does that do?  It's not like the media reports it.

All I've heard from them on Air America is to send money and take the day off on Nov 2.  Can we see at least one page from the playbook?

It's far better to uphold the Constitution and burn the flag than it is to hold up the flag and burn the Constitution.

    •  I agree with you.... (none / 0)

A one day protest is nothing...Like spitting into the wind. It will generate little if any media attention. Now, a general strike of say, a month, a la the Polish Solidarity movement.... now you're talking...

Hitting the "Have Mores" in their collective pocket books is the only real (and peaceful) club we "Have Nots" have....But it must be prolonged and painful or it will have no impact.

Of course that might mean that we would have to sacrifice too...our comfort and our security...No TV, no new purchases other than the very basics...Buy nothing for the Christmas Holidays...Instead make your own gifts or give your service to another...There are ways to make this work. And with the barter system and lending a helping hand to each other it could be done in fine style and without too much pain on the part of the "Have Nots".

Almost as effective for change as praying.

It's a neighborly day in this beautywood. Relentless!

  •  yes, what are we to accomplish? (none / 0)

I am advocating tune out, turn off, stay home and buy nothing Nov 2, but really I don't see it as accomplihsing much. I don't see people in suburbia taking to the streets in protest. I hope I am wrong.

  •  At the very LEAST (4.00 / 2)

can we call it a call for, and show of, UNITY?
    •  Don't forget Fitzgerald! (none / 0)

His license to investigate evaporates on Oct 28, so it is very likely by Nov 2 the nation will be getting an earful of why the Bush administration is a criminal enterprise.

having a competing Mock pro-war rally:

    "WE LOVE THE POLICE STATE"
Mock Pro-War Rally in Milwaukee, Wisconsin

With the anti-war movement in Milwaukee lacking a significant and consistent showing, when the Milwaukee police department tickets motorists who drive by anti-war rallys and honk in support of the protesters, in a time when the war is televised like a sporting event, a small group of Milwaukee artists, musicians, and outcasts decided to stage a mock pro-war rally to subvert the right!

The street theater action was committed on April 4th in near blizzard conditions when 20 "fanatical pro-war" supporters occupied the opposite side of the downtown street to rally in support of the war and oppose of the peace activists who gather every Friday for the weekly peace vigils.

The 20 "pro-war" supporters dressed in suits, waved American Flags, chanted slogans in fierce support of war, death, and killing. Rush hour traffic drove by and honked in approval to the flags and signs that read: "Freedom Is The Enemy", "Bomb My Car", "Get A Brain Morans", "Iraq Out Of Iraq", "Draft My Child", "Send Our Infants", "Soccer Moms For Blood", "I Want More Meat", "War Is Peace", "I'm Pro-Life And Pro-Death", "Stop Reporting The Facts", "Peace Is For The Afterlife", "Bush Is The Savior", "This Is No Time For Thinking", "Pro-Bush Lesbian", and "Ask Me About My Baby Killing Honor Student" among other slogans.

Before the event the local media were called and told about the "Clear Channel" sponsored pro-war rally. The reporters failed to get an interview from the pro-war fanatics because every time they approached the demonstrators they chanted "Boycott The Liberal Media!". The riot cops were very confused by the heartfelt chants of "We Love The Police State!".

And the anti-war protesters were perplexed by the "All We Are Saying Is Give Death A Chance" chorus.

A few on-lookers with their jaws dropped may indeed never visit Milwaukee again, but all told the "Pro-War" reaction was a smashing success that demonstrates the kind of gung-ho patriotism that would make George W. proud.

  •  Response from the WCW people at the White House (none / 0)

I just called Travis at the White House and asked him some of those questions.  Here is what he said:

We are not talking about a one-day protest at all; but we do need a big day on Nov. 2. We are talking about launchng a movement that will not stop until the Bush Regime is driven from power.

This is not about one day and then we all go home. We are serious when we say that Nov 2 will be the begininning of the end of the Bush Regime.

Part of the point of Nov 2 is that, as the call says that people look at this admiinistration and they are anguished by what is happening--if people participate, millions more will see that there is something that CAN be done.

Not fighting outrages one by one and losing ground, but actually launching a movement to create a political situation in which he is driven from office and the whole direction of this regime is repudiated and stopped. If they can do it in Argentina and other countries, we can do it here.

The fact is there are tens of millions out there--Newt Gingrich was correct when he said our country has not been as divided as it is today since the 1840s and 50s.

People have the need for a vehicle to express this outrage, yet they cannot find it.  Politics as usual cannot meet the challenge and we all sense this.

People poured their hearts into stopping the war before it even began--Bush's response was "I don't listen to focus groups."  Millions of us worked hard on the election, only to feel equally defeated.

It's not that people don't care-- people care DEEPLY--but what will work?

    A Page from the Playbook:

The objective is to pull off a powerful day--to get people out of classrooms, boardrooms, offices and to gather together publicly, in town and city centers, to repudiate the Bush regime. We need to make a large statement.

Having done that and reaching out to millions of fed-up people, we will be better able to organize.

The posters above make good points. A one day protest IS spitting in the wind, but we need to get to a level where we CAN ratchet up and build the movement that will topple this administration.

We remember when the universities were shut down after the Cambodian invasion, when MLK's assassination created an uproar.  We need something less self-destructive but bigger than that.

It is becoming clearer that we have to do this ourselves. We the people must act.  We must act together, and we must act in public.

    •  To the Organizers... (none / 0)

Have you seen what is going on in support of Teachers in BC, Canada? These people are willing to go to jail for their beliefs...how many Americans are willing to sacrifice like that, eh?

Or how about this from Lou Dobbs last night...

For those left at Delphi, they may get as little as $10 an hour. Many of these are experienced career industrial workers who will now make just about what a Wal-Mart worker earns, and will take home about $3,000 more than the average, say, fast food restaurant worker.

You need to start targeting the workers...The back bone of American Society...The Middle class and those throughout the South who are being denied the right to work for a living wage in the rebuilding after Katrina.

Your adds talk about environmental issues, theocratic issues, and global domination...ALL are important and RIGHT...BUT....right now the average Middle and Lower Middle Class DON'T CARE about anything but survival...and they are losing ground daily

Your appeals need to be directed to them if you want to get the burbs involved...
