Something has never felt quite right about this whole Miers mess, but while perusing
AMERICAblog today, it hit me. This lady worships the President -- she would do anything he asks of her, even trash her own reputation and career. Bush knew that people in his own party would revolt once they heard that she was the nominee. But Bush also knew something else....
more on the flip
What else did Bush know? He knew that Miers supported a constitutional amendment (!) to ban abortion. How did he know? Apparently, it wasn't that hard to
find out:
"If Congress passes a Human Life Amendment to the Constitution that would prohibit abortion except when it was necessary to prevent the death of the mother, would you actively support its ratification by the Texas Legislature," asked an April 1989 questionnaire sent out by the Texans United for Life group.
Miers checked "yes" to that question, and all of the group's questions, including whether she would oppose the use of public moneys for abortions and whether she would use her influence to keep "pro-abortion" people off city health boards and commissions.
So, we've all expected this all along -- Dobson has all but told us that she supports a ban on abortions. Now the whole senate knows:
Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers pledged support in 1989 for a constitutional amendment banning abortions except when necessary to save the life of the mother, according to material given to the Senate on Tuesday.
So, what do you think the Senate will do? I suspect that the vast majority of the Republican senators will soon be touting Miers as a "trailblazer" and "eminently qualified candidate" or some such hogwash. Democrats will be backed into a corner....with no choice but to filibuster. The nomination is withdrawn, and the "real" nominee soon surfaces -- some hateful, bigoted Scalia clone, to be sure. At this point, the filibuster option has been exercised and using it again would surely cause a political firestorm -- and a spike in Bush's poll numbers.
Fuckers.
Update [2005-10-18 11:58:21 by Matt in GA]: Mark Schmitt does a pretty good job of backing up this type of scenario in discussing the overwhelming desire that conservatives have for "The Final Showdown" with Democrats.
