Living in a bubble, drunk on power and other refined rocket fuels, and steeped in hubris -- oh, yeah -- a stack of full pardons is already in Dubya's breast pocket, near to his black and shriveled heart.
Issuing them is a no-brainer to this no-brainer of a Prezinint. It's the timing that's all wrong. It'd be like laying down yer royal flush before the bets are all in.
Our Cowboy King is a long, long way from his last month in office, that marvelous month when he can cut his cronies loose from the consequences of their crimes with little fear of political backlash.
But to pardon right now -- this weekend -- when he really, really needs to, and to then continue to grandly rule over us all? Riotously impossible.
Bush has a giant shit sandwich to eat here. His own shit sandwich. He caused, and is presiding over, the demise of the Republican Party, a political engine painstakingly assembled out of strange bedfellows since 1980. Bush blew his engine. That's his entire legacy -- redlining, overshoot and blowback. Government by coke fiend, whadya expect?
From here, well, he can simply resign, making any coming month his final month, a month of issuing full pardons. But he takes the whole circus down with him when he does.
Or, he can muddle through the coming indictments and their aftermath, which is probably his default course. But he is not merely a lame duck now; he is a ruptured duck, dragging his manhood behind him wherever he walks. Muddling in this manner leads straight to a Democratic Congress in '06 and a prompt and colorful impeachment.
Nope. No way outta here but one. It will have to be war.
Syria and Iran are his only way out. Pardons can be issued glibly during a time of national emergency such as having no choice but to toss nukes around the Middle East to safeguard our freedoms here at home and to spread democracy for hundreds of miles downwind over there.
With the sands of Persia glassy and glowing, we will be told that, yet again, now is not the time to play the blame game. It will yet again be a time to look forward, and support our Prezinint.
Remember, Mistah Bush has never once started a war unless it was absolutely necessary.
