Okay, it's a slow chilly day in central Maryland and here I sit at lunchtime shopping for a Christmas gift for one of my sisters. She is a rabid fiberholic. For those of you who don't know what a fiberholic is, in my sisters case she knits and spins her own yarns and felts fabric and weaves sometimes too.
In shopping for her gift, I saw a bunch of interesting fiber-artist blogs.
More below the fold.
I love fiber and all the fun things you can do with it. I've already told you about my sister's "habit." As for me, I crochet, knit, make hooked rugs and braid rugs too. I have a wheel, but haven't taken a spinning class yet. I used to raise cashmere goats, but that part of my life is on hold for now as I am not on a farm at the moment.
Some overacheivers aren't satisfied with just making scrumptuous things, they have to blog/brag about it too. I am so proud/jealous of them I can't see straight. Who has time to do all this? Don't they know that we are living in an era of instant food and 10 minute dating? Who are these freaks who make my little attempts at tunisian crochet look so damn homely. What? Oh... no, I'm okay now, no this isn't supposed to be a rant. Let us proceed.
Why you may be asking would Chillin choose to diary this today. My response is this. I, like others here, have written diaries bemoaning the loss of manufacturing (especially clothing and other consumer goods) in the USA today. But I also know from experience that in many "cottages" across the land, beautiful things are made everyday by fiber brothers and sisters of every gender, age and color. Quilts, rugs, clothing and art representing cultures from around the world are still made with pride here. So my Wal-Mart hating, China-baiting friends, feast your eyes on some of the textiles still "Made in America" and read their stories of how it all comes about.
