Radnofsky to Hutchison: Resign if you tolerate perjury

Mon Oct 24, 2005 at 10:27:51 AM PDT

Radnofsky press release:

Texas Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate Barbara Ann Radnofsky called on her Republican opponent to resign if she tolerates perjury. "No elected official should tolerate or excuse perjury. I call on Kay Bailey Hutchison to renounce perjury. She should resign if she tolerates it," Radnofsky said.

On October 23, Kay Bailey Hutchison said in televised comments concerning the Plame investigation that, "I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn't indict on the crime..."

Kay Bailey Hutchison's poll numbers are slipping, she's making comments that even Michelle Malkin finds "more than a bit disturbing." Truth is not a big  priority for KBH, whether it involves perjury or campaign promises to not serve more than two terms. Between GWB and KBH, it should be obvious by now that former cheerleaders do not competent elected officials make.

Barbara Radnofsky is as smart as KBH is dim. She is running a lean and mean campaign, working the state hard by getting out and talking to people all across the state. Lubbock, Brownsville, Kerrville, Flower Mound, Ft. Worth are among her 250+ trips and thousands of miles listening to people. She makes her living as a mediator, finding ways to solve problems.

I've been to quite a few of her appearances, and I see it again and again. Lots of loyal Democrats come in to hear this person who is going to be the honorary roadbump in the Senate race. They're all very polite before the speech.

Then Barbara starts talking, not about how she's a hot-shot lawyer, but about her dad was wounded by shrapnel in a plane over Nazi Germany. About a fellow soldier risking his life by giving her dad the parachute off his back, saving his life. Still wounded, escaping from the Germans and driving cross country in a wood burning jeep before finally ending up in an English hospital. He was nineteen.

He grew up to be a NASA scientist who worked on the space program and got a man on the moon on time and under budget. This is her frame of reference. She is only there because of the sacrifice of others, and there is nothing that can't be done with enough effort.

She lights into Kay Bailey Hutchison for inadequately funding VA needs. This is not political positioning. This is dad and grandpa she's fighting for, and all the other dads and brothers and sons, moms and sisters and daughters who have served our country. Barbara pounded this issue all along the campaign trail, and finally KBH flip-flopped on the side of adequate funding.

Barbara points out the percentage of soldiers who come from Texas, largely from South Texas, and rails on the fact that there is no VA hospital south of San Antonio, meaning that many thousands of vets have to travel for up to eight hours to receive medical care. She's been calling for a VA hospital south of San Antonio for almost a year. What do you know, KBH last month finally suggested that a VA Hospital south of San Antonio would be a good thing. Barbara smiles and notes that it is very satisfying that her opponent with $12 million in the bank is basing her campaign on responding to the novice.

She moves on, advocating for healthcare, education, renewable energy, thoroughly captivating the crowd. Folks are forgetting all about that roadbump stuff. Then she opens the floor to questions. This is where she really shines. Whatever the issue, she shows incredible depth of knowledge, and answering the question without resorting to the trick of reframing the question and spouting talking points.

After the speech, she is swarmed by the formerly 'polite' crowd, shaking hands, following up on questions. I get collared by some intense individual who wants to know how much money she's raising, whether she's getting press. They realize, hey, we've got a candidate here, we can't let this opportunity slip. The formerly invincible KBH now seems like the roadbump, if we can just get Barbara a level playing field.

Things are changing. The small campaign has been in Andy and Judy, 'let's put on a show in the barn' mode, and doing a pretty damn good job, IIDSSM. But now the big kids want to help out. Harry Reid, Dick Durbin and other senators are now showing interest and planning fundraisers. I hear good things. Keep Barbara on your radar.

  •  Excellent! (4.00 / 40)

Good luck to her.  This is a very informative diary.  KBH is a disgrace to the state and the Senate, and sure the hell won't be missed.

BTW, where can people contribute to her campaign?

    •  KBH resigning (4.00 / 7)

I agree. Doesn't she have to take some form of oath when she's sworn into office? There must be something in there that she's violated by taking this "position," if you can call it that.

Let's see how many other Dems call shenanigans.

      •  Radnofsky should ask Hutchison (4.00 / 10)

if she also regards her oath to uphold and defend the laws of the United States as a mere "technicality"...
      •  Radnofsky (4.00 / 5)

Doesn't just need to call for Hutchison's resignation, but to DEMAND that Hutchison explain why purjury was an impeachable offense for Clinton but nothing of any consequence for virtually every Republican in any position of authority within the Party and country.

A debate would be a great place to bring up Hutchison's hypocrisy.

    •  Ballsy (4.00 / 9)

I never heard of this contender before but she made a good first impression. After reading the article she seems to be leading KBH around by the nose with things like the VA hospital.
I hope KBH was startled by the ferocity of the response from Radnofsky and goes quietly back into her box/Senate Office. I consider this a shot across the bow of any GOoPer's out there who want to defend this brazen bunch and are up for relection. I wish her the best of luck against KBH.
  •  Go Radnofsky Go! (4.00 / 22)

The horrendous comment made by Hutchison which blatantly minimized perjury was one of the most shameful and despicable comments I have ever seen a Senator make (well, since Huey Long).  This creates an immediate political opening for Radnofsky to exploit and positions the race as one between a perjury-minimizing/treason-defending Hutchison and a Radnofsky who holds the Mighty Sword of Justice!

    Let's hope Texans notice!

    What are the poll numbers?
  •  Kay Bailey Hutchison (4.00 / 28)

is a shill for the Bush Administration, period.
She is not very bright and like her counterpart John Cornyn kisses Bush's ass daily.  These are my Senators.  I cannot stand it.
  •  I saw (4.00 / 7)

her a couple of weeks ago at the Williamson County fundraiser.  She had a competent, regal bearing to her.  She looked quite professional with her aides. She was quite comfortable doing what she was doing.  If any will have a chance it's her.
  •  Wow, thanks (4.00 / 13)

    Barbara sounds wonderful.

And I LOVE all the crap Hutchison is getting for her comments. She's being villified everywhere today! I love it!

I sent her an e-mail that wasn't too nice. I wonder how many others she got?

You know, we can really make a difference. We're writing to the press (who wrote to Russert?), we're writing to Senators and Congressmen. We're tired of being silent. I think we need to keep it going.

Having Democrats like Barbara only helps. It is time we stood up and demanded our voices to be heard!

    •  Barbara IS wonderful (4.00 / 10)

I've met her a couple of times-- she speaks well, and is even more eloquent when she tackles tough questions from the crowd. Her strategy of campaigning across the state, starting with the small towns, is very smart.

    •  She got this email from me yesterday (4.00 / 11)

On today's episode of Meet the Press, Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison addressed the issue of potential indictments resulting from the CIA leak investigation with the following comments:

"I certainly hope that if there is going to be an indictment that says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some perjury technicality where they couldn't indict on the crime so they go to something just to show that their two years of investigation were not a waste of time and dollars."

This is an interesting change of view compared with her opening statements made before Congress at the impeachment hearings of President Clinton:

"Perjury, regardless of the setting, is a serious offense that results in incalculable harm to the function of the legal system, as well to private individuals," end quote. In my judgment, perjury goes to the heart of our judicial process and our very system of government and constitutes a "high crime and misdemeanor."

I ask Ms. Hutchison, and all other members of Congress and the press who are espousing the same position, to explain what has changed in the interim.

  •  just a minor correction (4.00 / 5)

I work for the VA Hospital in San Antonio, and while there may not be "VA Hospital" south of San Antonio, there are however clinics operated by the South Texas Veteran's Health Care System all over south Texas. Corpus, Victoria, McAllen, Harlingen, Laredo, etc.. all have a STVHCS presence.
  •  Can't stand KBH. (4.00 / 11)

Never could, but especially not after her whole emotional crying nominating speech on the Senate floor.  Repulsive.

    FYI, I'm a former cheerleader.  :-)  Guess I won't run.  ;-)

  •  This is likely to be one of the few checks I ever. (4.00 / 12)

write to a Texas candidate.  Good job Barb!  Kick Kays ass and bury her with this using a tv ad...A US senator with no respect for the law...how can you represent this nation and its peoples with no rule of law and no respect of them.

And PS Kay, Martha still made cash off her little "inside info".....or is that technical, like Frist too?

    •  Don't Sell Us Short (4.00 / 6)

Don't sell us short here in Texas.  We have a terrific candidate Chris Bell running for governor.  He was the congressman to break the ethics truce in congress and file an ethics complaint against Tom DeLay, which essentially got the ball rolling.  David Harris is a friend and Iraqi Freedom veteran running against Joe Barton in CD 6.  Congressman Nick Lampson is a strong candidate taking on Tom DeLay in CD 22.  John Courage won a Democracy For America Grassroots All-Star Endorsement and is running against Lamar Smith in CD 21.  Mary Beth Harrell also looks like a good candidate for CD 31.
      •  What about (4.00 / 2)

What about Ted Ankrum against Mike McCaul?  Or Charlie Thompson going up against Hensarling?  They both look like relatively decent candidates (Ankrum especially).

  •  sounds like a winner (4.00 / 6)

Perhaps not in this race, considering that KBH likely will raise some sick amount. But anyone who responds so quickly and strongly deserves support. This could turn into a race worth watching.

I think Hutchison sees a future president in the mirror. As the Republicans figure--though increasingly without much hope--with the Pirro campaign in New York, there's something to be said for just denting the perceived invincibility of a candidate like that.

    •  Speaking of Pirro (none / 1)

There was a quote attributed to her that appeared in last Friday's San Antonio Express-News, to-wit:  "That's a difference between Democrats and Republicans -- we don't want them next door molesting children and murdering women."

Does anyone have any context for this utterly reprehensible remark?  She sounds like Ann Coulter.

  •  Hutchinson: Then and Now ... (4.00 / 15)

As Think Progress points out, it's interesting to compare Hutchison's recent comments with comments she made back in 1999:

[S]omething needs to be said that is a clear message that our rule of law is intact and the standards for perjury and obstruction of justice are not gray. And I think it is most important that we make that statement and that it be on the record for history.

... I don't want there to be any lessening of the standard. Because our system of criminal justice depends on people telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. That is the lynch pin of our criminal justice system and I don't want it to be faded in any way.

Of course, that was what she said in the context of the impeachment of President Clinton.  I'm sure there's a very good reason that she feels differently about perjury in this context.

when it's about a blow job.

But when perjury is committed to coverup the undermining of our national security, which was done to coverup the #1 War Lie, in a whole pack of lies, that sent us to war based on lies, well, that's just dandy.

  •  Thanks, George (4.00 / 13)

I e-mailed Al Franken, who's been giving KayBee a ration today on AAR.  I linked to your diary, quoted the press release from Radnovsky, and gave the link for the campaign.

Boy, this is starting to feel good!

  •  Radnofsky sounds like a great candidate! (4.00 / 3)

It ain't going to be easy, but our chances are heading in the right direction.

let's not forget what ignoring the red states (and letting Dems there wither) has wrought for the whole country -- Bush, Rove, DeLay's redistricting.... If opposition were stronger in Texas, they'd be less able to inflict pain nationwide.
I hope those with pockets deep enough to help candidates all over the country will not ignore Texas Dems just because their odds are long. And I'm heartened that Dean seems to agree that the Democratic Party can't become the party of the blue states only and just cede the rest.
It won't be long before demographics will give Texas a better chance to go blue.
  •  After 5 years of total control (4.00 / 7)

and 10 years holding the Congress, Republican Senators and Representatives have created the means for their own demise. Democratic challengers must clearly explain the actual votes, the actual public statements, the campaign contributions, the associations, the bribes and junkets.

In the past, it has always been a bit of a stretch to make the Republican opponent's record look really bad. No more. They have taken all the rope they need for us to hang them, but our candidates need to be as aggressive as Ms. Radnofsky, so that voters are very clear on the facts.

Good for her! Others need to listen and learn.

Point out this hypocrisy wherever we can. Go on the offensive - we can't let the R's get away with this crap spin, we must get to it before they can even get it out the door.
  •  While I remain a pessimist (4.00 / 7)

(this IS Texas we're talking about) you have to start somewhere, and this is a good beginning.  In the spirit of this campaign, here are some other "short strokes" I tried to put into a diary once before my internet connection crashed.

-Lying under oath is a "technicality"?  Was your oath of office a lie, Senator?  Were you lying when you swore to uphold the Constitution?
-If perjury is no big deal, will you be voting to repeal the federal statute that makes it a crime?
-If perjury is no big deal, why do we provide for up to five years of imprisonment?
-Lying to a federal grand jury FOUR TIMES is a "technicality"?
-Lying to the prosecutor your own boss appointed as a US attorney is a "technicality"?
-You're spending an awful lot of time defending lies about national security.  I guess you've had plenty of practice.

-Kay Bailey Hutchinson.  Soft on treason.  Soft on crime.

  •  Kay's staff... (4.00 / 9)

Kay's staff refuse to answer questions about condoning perjury and obstruction of justice.  They're happy to take a comment, but they will not respond to inquiries about how the Senator can support perjury.
    •  Kay Bay, Stepford Senator (none / 0)

Also, her Washington office phone does not allow the caller to leave a message if you happen to work for a living, and don't have an opportunity to call during normal business hours.

I send tons of email to Kay Bay and she responds via snail mail to every single letter. However, her responses are the Stepford Rethuglican talking points claptrap-never any substantive points.  You can hear the same old sh*t from Rush Limbaugh.  She has never expressed an original idea or point of her own, and follows in line with the Bush cabal nonsense like a good little obedient tin soldier.

I am excited about a bonafide intelligent challenger like Barbara R., but at this point, I'd vote for a vaseline sandwich over Big-hair pinhead Kay.

It would be mighty helpful if someone started posting a list of the zingers Delay and others delivered about the Clinton charges so we can all be well-armed to rebut the breathtaking hypocrisy that's about to avalanche the press.

You could catch a high-ranking Republican in bed with a six-year old boy at Michael Jackson's house, and the GOP establishment would blame it on the following:

    1. The boy
    2. They boy's parents
    3. Michael Jackson
    4. The bed manufacturer
    5. The contractor who built Jackson's house
    6. Bill Clinton

I'm more convinced than ever that admission to the Republican party requires one to fail an intelligence test and take an oath to never, ever accept responsibility for anything.

      •  But they like people who can fake it convincingly (none / 1)

        better.

Come on. I lived in Texas. Their myth of authenticity is represented perfectly by the Alamo: It's a recreated 'fortress' that, even as its been moved, is still considered sacred ground. The thing is about the size of a taco bell and represented a complete slaughter -- not a heroic stand. The whole thing, from start to result, is a lie.

And, naturally, it's the pillar on which the rest of the myth of Texas rests.

Just look at what happened to some great Texas pols: Sam Houston (a heroic plain-talker who was ousted when he came out against slavery and in favor of the Union), Ann Richards (who got destroyed by the lying sack of shit from Greenwich, CT), Ralph Yarborough (who got whipped by Lloyd Bentsen in a primary for being too liberal) and Maury Maverick (whose ancestor Sam's practice of branding his cattle different, gave rise to the name -- nothing to bad happened to him).

When choosing between authencity and faux Texan, they've been choosing the faux for almost 150 years.

        •  they (4.00 / 4)

Another "they" that apparently likes (or until recently used to like?) people who can fake it convincingly -- the whole freaking country.

About the Alamo: I guess the question of whether it moved depends on what part and when. The church (with the famous facade) has not moved since it was completed in the mid 18th century, although the facade was added years after the battle.

  •  Love hearing about KICK-ASS Dems! (4.00 / 5)

As a progressive Texas voter, I was heartened to hear of Radnofsky's criticism of Hutchison, who is, as they say around here, as dumb as a rock.  However, her flag-waving martial opening gambit really put me off.  Sounds to me like she would vote for more war, just like Hutchison. I hope that she has more to offer than the "We Dems can be as militaristic as the Republicans" stance so favored by much of her cowed and gutted party.  To my mind there is now a vast gulf between proponents of American exceptionalism and progressives.  I don't believe you can be both.

  •  Yeah! A politician jumping on something (4.00 / 4)

It's so nice to see a politician actually jump on something like this.

If Radnofsky can make this race competitive, that would be awesome and would definitely help some of the down ticket races.

  •  Here's a song for Barbara Ann! (4.00 / 4)

The Beach Boys' original "Barbara Ann" (with chords and lyrics)

    Now add your own lyrics!

    Here's my take:

    Ba-bar-bar, Bar-bar-bra Ann!
    Ba-bar-bar, Bar-bar-bar Barbara Ann-yann-yann!
    She'll make a stand!
    Barbara Ann!

She'll set you rockin' an' a-rolling, rockin' an' a-reelin', Barbara Ann!

By using KBH as an example you are simply perpetuating a stereotype.  There are many gifted and highly intelligent cheerleaders.

  •  I caught KBH's comments... (4.00 / 5)

...to Russert last night after a few glasses of wine and thought I was hallucinating.  I mean, I know most Republicans (and certainly most Republicans from Texas) have a low regard for the truth, but to watch her trod all over the idea that Republicans should be subject to perjury laws (and otherwise babble nonsensically) made for more amusement than I've had in months.

Only in Texas could this woman be doing anything besides hosting tea socials.  That hair is a marvel of physics.

  •  A delight (4.00 / 5)

Now, Radnofsky has a chance to put this formally safe race on the map. While it is unlikely that she will against Kay Bee (She is still, regardless, popular, and is considered to be a thousand times nicer and more courteous than Cornyn), Her candidacy accurately follows this "50 state strategy". Plus, if she gets relatively close, garnering about let's say 45% of the vote, it would be a perfect reason to send her in 2008 against scumbag John Cornyn, where it may be a rather easy pick-up opportunity for the year.

I can see a wonderful ad. Her statements in 1999 about the Clinton impeachment followed by her comments last week, saying "Now is not the time for hypocracy".

  •  Working hard, working smart (4.00 / 4)

She sounds like a great candidate who is putting in the hard campaigning effort. This is how we regain Congress. Tie down the incumbent Republicans--make them contest even those seats starting with $12 million in the bank.

For all that Radnofsky's doing, I can definitely skip a meal out this month--I just passed along a donation as well.

  •  Shows Dean is right ... (4.00 / 5)

to be pressing for Democrats to be in every race ...

Some might be simply speedbumps ... some might simply aggravate their Rethug opponents ... but some might prove to be stars and help align the stars the right way in Congress.

I hope you are right that she can align the stars to put a Democratic Senator from Texas as part of a new Democratic majority in the Senate ...

  •  Rubber Stamper (4.00 / 4)

KBH is nothing but a rubber stamp for the talking-papers spewing out of GOP headquarters.  She's proven once again that she refuses to think for herself in an attempt to stay in the good graces of her masters.  Hutchison is an embarrassment to the Senate, to her state and to the entire nation.

I hope the door does hit her on the way out.

I drink your Republicans. I drink them up!

Great diary.  I've been donating to Radnofsky for quite a while, since I can't stand Kay Bay.  I'm sending the Bush sycophant yet another email about her hypocritical remarks on Meet the Press, with a copy to Timmmmeeehh!

  •  Great work (4.00 / 3)

Bob Schieffer brought it up on CBS news tonight and then added how the senator's office released a "clarification' about how Perjury TOO was illegal.

    Gotta love it.

Tonight's stories were a bit interesting in a lot of respects...so here's a trial ballong I wrote about earlier on anothe thread...

COULD the "leaker" turn out to be Harriet Miers?  Fitzerald (NOT an independent prosecutor) could reveal that it was Harriet (remember, conservatives don't like her AND she contributed to Al Gore!!1!) who revealed Valerie Plame's ID to deflect from the White House (she WAS White House Counsel and she DOES thing George W. Bush is the most BRILLIANT man in the whole solar system!@!)

It would also let them dump her for the Court in one fell swoop...Oh yea, and knock the Fitzmas tree down and resume their habit of pissing on the backs of everyone from the media on down.

    just sayin'

  •  I love diaries like this ... (4.00 / 2)

especially when there is a link to the candidate's website ... where I can make a soul-purifying, hope-filled contribution of a few dollars ... and feel like I'm helping to get the national job done with a good solid candidate.

The first time donating outside my native state was was Paul Hackett and it felt great!  It still feels great.

    I think I'll go have a cigarette ... metaphorically speaking.  ;-)

  •  Watch out for Swift Boating (none / 1)

I watched the "swiftboating" of Corzine over and over again on TV today (I'm shopping for a new TV set and HAD to watch what the store was tuned to).

Radnofsky is sure to be the target of not just swiftboating but of smear and rumor campaigns.

Meanwhile, I'm so happy to make her acquaintance via Dailykos.

  •  Time for Kay to take her cutsey smile............ (none / 0)

and leave politics.  I live in Texas and write her quite a bit....I get the same standard BS letter in the mail...party line response to why she votes for the issues.  In other words...I know what I am doing and you don't!  Well Kay, you made an idiot of yourself on MTP Sunday....made my chin hit the floor......and by the way, your looks are definitely
definitely failing you.  One more thing, if you pulled the stick out of your butt, your forehead would relax and maybe you'd sincerely smile whilst you lie!  Disgusted in Texas..........!
