Theere has been much speculation that the announccement that Meirs' nomination has been withdrawn was down to trying to cover up the bad news over the indictments probably now scheduled for Friday.
There is however another development that the Bush administration in particular would like to cover up for reasons that we are all too familiar with. On Thursday afternoon the final UN Oil-forFood Report will be issued in New York and is expected to name the companies involved in paying bribes to Saddam. Now we know that US companies are involved. Is Bush trying to deflect criticism from his friends in the Oil industry?
The evidence of a planned deflection is out there. Earlier this week, further allegations were made against George Galloway that he had lied to congress when he made his bunker-busting appearance. Yet that same investigative committee has declined to name the US companies and individuals involved in the scam, citing confidentiality. The UN report will not have that restriction.
We wait with baited breath for the full report to be released (very soon) for that list of names to be revealed.
