I'm incredulous and so saddened by the people in the US Govt. leadership who make decisions about the rules of war.
In particular, I'm talking about those who have chosen to authorize the use of white phosphorous (WP) in combatting insurgents, while civilian families and workers are near enough to be caramelized. These war strategists have lost their own humanity enough to claim that WP is ok because it is "not a chemical weapon." Wait a minute - help me out here - is it not a chemical or not a weapon? Further, the US claims WP is "not illegal", as if the absence of humane laws justifies the use of such devastating weapons.
What if the tables were turned and OUR communities were being struck by incendiaries that melt the flesh down to the bone? Can we relate better and care a little more if we picture this devastation in our own neighborhoods?
I applaud the Kos writer who last week reported her intention of making 2000 copies of photos of caramelized Iraqi innocents to hand out at church. Those visuals take this matter out of the realm of intellectual argument and strike straight at the heart.
