Most folks around here don't much like Chris Matthews, and he sometimes drives me as nuts as anybody, but once in a while his style gets some astounding statements out of people. He was just interviewing Trent Lott, and after going through many of Rove's "legal but hardball" tactics, he asked Lott if he thought that Rove should go. Lott didn't QUITE agree in so many many words, but he came much closer than I would have believed.
Lott observed that there had rarely been a top campaign official who had become a top policy advisor, and that it was a very tough transition to make. Matthews then tried to get him to say in so many words whether Rove should be gone, and Lott wouldn't agree with it, but he said something to the effect that he didn't really know what was going on at the White House, but that the President had a decision to make. From the context, and the tone and body language, I got the clear impression that Lott (and probably lots of other Republicans on the Hill) would love to see Rove gone. And the only reason I can imagine for that is that these people are running even more scared than most of us could have believed.
