John Dean posted today at
Findlaw his open letter to Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald urging him that his focus is too narrow, his investigation should be widened.
Today Fitzgerald filed court papers seeking a New grand jury. Take out the broiler. It's Thanksgiving time.
Dean's letter is very interesting. Here are some 'right on the money' excerpts:
"The Watergate Precedent,
Even more troubling, from a historical point of view, is the fact that the narrowness of your investigation, which apparently is focusing on the Intelligence Protection Act (making it a crime to uncover the covert status of a CIA agent), plays right into the hands of the perpetrators in the Administration."
more after fold
Dean give a few pointers; not that I think Fitz needs any.
"Indeed, this is exactly the plan that was employed during Watergate by those who sought to conceal the Nixon Administration's crimes, and keep criminals in office.
The plan was to keep the investigation focused on the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters -- and away from the atmosphere in which such an action was undertaken. Toward this end, I was directed by superiors to get the Department of Justice to keep its focus on the break-in, and nothing else."
[snip]
He then makes the point that had Congress at the time not taken its own investigation - a Democratically controlled Congress with a Republican President - no conviction would have been likely.
Dean continues. I like his plea and hope Fitz listens.
"Now with a Republican-controlled Congress and a Republican President, you (a Republican appointee) are the last bulwark of protection for the American people. We must hope you'll keep faith with them." (emphasis throughout mine)
