Thus:
- You download a program from the World Community Grid.
- It runs in the background on your PC, analyzing proteins and drugs in the fight against human diseases.
- You can set it to run your PC for just AIDs, or just protein research, or both. (I suggest both--everything is connected anyway.)
- Periodically it sends your results to the World Community Grid.
I have run this on my PC for about a year and I have had no problems with it slowing me down; but if you are doing something intense on your PC, you can always go to the program's icon in your desktop tray and do: "Right-click > Snooze" or "Right-click > Exit" to suspend it.

BTW, when you set up your profile, you can join a team--and there is already a "Daily Kos" team. I just joined it, making myself member #4. Let's see if we can raise that number.
