Is anyone else tired of feeling pressure to act so holy all the time in order to preserve the dignity of being a liberal, e.g.:
I'm a liberal, but I respect the troops.
I'm a liberal, but I respect the role of churches.
I'm a liberal, but I [insert conservative idea here].
Well, I don't, and I'm tired of pretending.
[More on the flip]
I don't respect soldiers more or less than anyone else. Some soldiers are true heroes, others are scumbags. Any group that large is that large naturally defies generalizations. As for accepting that they're "doing it for me," well, I simply don't believe that.
So all of this sand throwing over who "supports the troops" is just garbage to me. If they want to be sent out to be cannon fodder, then they are Republicans.
Just to be quite frank, I also can't stand church people. If I had my way and I was king of the world, I wouldn't have to hear shit about God from anyone. Yeah, I can tolerate it, but I'm tired of being shamed into being quiet and advancing some looney notion that there is a Religious Left.
I'm tired of trying to find room in a "big tent" for people that are intolerant of gay rights or who are anti-abortion. These issues are just as black and white to me as they are to Republicans, and I'm tired of dancing around it.
Look, the truth is, I want everybody to have a chance and a good job, and people who do hard jobs like infantry soldiers deserve special respect, but some geek sitting in the bottom of a submarine is not more important than me.
You see, fellow liberals, we just aren't applying our own principles to ourselves. We are human beings too. We are allowed to have likes and dislikes (I, for one, dislike Republicans irrationally and to the point of unhealth) our strneghts and weaknesses, and we don't need a perfect rational system of the world -- no one cares anyway.
So, who gives a shit if Murtha was in the marines or not? He was fooled and voted for the Iraq war, so I don't care what he says -- he was a tool just like the rest of 'em. It's like, we're supposed to listen to him just because he has a resume when he fucked up just as much as someone else? Bullshit.
Most of the people, left and right, that get lionized on this site are jackasses. Murtha is a jackass. Hillary Clinton is a jackass. Some of them actually vote my way most of the time, so I'll keep voting for them, but I'm under no illusion that they're so damn great
ESPECIALLY when they don't do the right thing in the first place. I mean, the list of "now we like them because they changed their mind after fucking up" anti-Bush people is amazing...
Paul O'Niell
Richard Clarke
Joe Wilson
Murtha
Edwards
Kerry
Colin Powell
McCain
Hagel
Warner
I mean, c'mon -- now they're heroes just because they criticize Bush? They're still jerks for what they did in the past.
Update: Strike Joe Wilson. He just married a spy. No harm no foul. I forgot that we love the CIA now too.
