Intelligent design is the belief that life forms are so complex that their creation can't be explained by Darwinian evolutionary theory alone, but rather points to intentional creation, presumably divine. I suppose one can argue that; but I have a different view.
What is so complex about carbon-based life forms? We breathe, eat, and piss. I am certain the architecture and process flows of a nuclear power plant are far more complex than the physical form and inner workings of my Uncle Jimmy. We currently have surgeons that can perform a heart transplant with the mechanical ease of changing an oil filter. We have scientists that can manipulate DNA to customize the gender, eye and hair color of an unborn child. We have a map of the human genome. Humans can have even cloned life forms and created new life forms that never existed before like the Liger (part lion part tiger). If life forms were truly complex, we would not be able to do any of these things.
The theory of evolution works for me. If we fell into the mindset of intelligent design, we'd have to ask, "Why the mosquito?" What possible purpose can be served by creating a life form that ruins romantic evenings in a convertible on Lover's Lane? How many summers as a kid did I jump in the local mud hole to cool off only to come out with a leech or two attached to my torso or legs? I find much more comfort believing that the morally indifferent process of evolution is responsible for these parasites and viruses than a malevolent god; or a god that was too stupid to realize how all these various life forms would interact with each other.
Under intelligent design we would have to look at all the deadly life forms that have ever plagued humanity and ask, "What was He thinking?" So we have to come to a conclusion: See poll.
