Ed Schultz Show will now be aired on Armed Forces Radio

Mon Nov 07, 2005 at 01:45:04 PM PDT

It looks like we won and the Ed Schultz Show will now be aired on Armed Forces Radio.  I just received the following email:
Dear Friend,

I wanted to dash off a quick note to you with some exciting news. Today, we learned that the Ed Schultz Show will now be aired on Armed Forces Radio.

Ed Schultz stated, "I would like to thank General Clark for his efforts to help bring the Ed Schultz Show to Armed Forces Radio Network. To have the support of one of the highest ranking military officers in the history of the country is an honor."

And I want to thank you for your efforts. You sent over 25,000 letters to Members of Congress, and there is no doubt you helped make this happen. This is a tremendous victory for WesPAC grassroots.

This is also great news for the members of our military and their families. Armed Forces Radio honoring their promise to air the Ed Schultz Show will ensure greater political balance in their programming.

Finally, General Clark will be appearing on the Ed Schultz Show today at 5:30pm ET. For more information about your area visit www.wegoted.com.

Thank you again for your efforts. You made a difference.

Sincerely,

Catherine Grunden
Executive Director

  •  Got that email too... (none / 0)

And am listening to Harkin on C-SPAN. There's something about the fact that he has a letter saying that Ed will be on often...but it doesn't say when or how often Ed will be on.

    Is that important?

    •  I think how often is important (none / 0)

A progressive voice should have just as many hours of airtime as Rush.

It might be nice to have a whole bunch of different voices.   That way, if you get tired of Ed, you could hear someone else on a different day.

      •  The how often question seemed to be (none / 0)

        important to Harkin also.

Warner came out with a letter discussing the process that Armed Forces Radio goes by. They apparently hire a company to check ratings and such...as a determining factor.

Might be interesting to note that Limbaugh's ratings have gone down in some places.

But I noted that they've put Larry di Rita in charge of it. That's interesting given his last couple of gigs.

  •  Yeah! (none / 0)

It's a start, at least...from a 15% progressive offering, anything is an improvement.
    •  15% offered but 0% carried! (none / 1)

Sen Harkin held up a chart on C-Span...while 15% of the programming offered on Armed Forces Radio is considered progressive, 0% is actually carried.....I'm not sure why that is but he did hold up two charts to illustrate the difference..also he pointed out that DOD is only commiting to Offering Ed Schultze...not carrying. Big Difference and No Small surprise....

Stuff like this is very important.

    •  Yes... (none / 0)

Kudos to Clark. Clark knows that spreading knowledge, educating voters via media is truly paramount. Letting the Rush/Hannity scales drop from the eyes of American voters in the military and elsewhere will be the only way to return this country to its democratic foundations, and away from its current path towards feudalism.

      •  Clark has told us many times (none / 1)

...that it is our duty to set the record straight, and call into rightwing programs at least once a week. (--> I've failed in my duty, but hope to make amends. I do write and call the MSM.) This is important to him.

Anyway, for all that criticized Clark for his time at faux, he is just practicing what he preaches.

Oh, and recently he commented: "I love going into the Lion's Den!" as he set back in his chair and beamed.

  •  I'm glad to hear this! (none / 0)

I must have the same email but haven't checked it yet.

  •  It's amazing (none / 0)

It's amazing that we had to actually fight for this.

  •  Fantastic that Wes Clark (none / 1)

    will be on like that.

Schultz looks to be a good fit so far.

BTW, I diaried this earlier (with only a Raw Story link)

  •  Sen. Harkin read some snarky comments (none / 1)

made previously by Rush Limbaugh into the record.

Harkin shows a chart which shows 100% conservative radio vs. 0% progressive.

Harkin says "I don't want Limbaugh off the air, I just want a progressive to provide fair and balanced programming."

  •  am I the only one to think (none / 0)

Ed Schultz's voice and inflection are similar to Rush Limbaugh's? His upper register, in particular?

I got used to it, but his voice used to bug me a LOT... am I the only one?

Ed is now my favorite Air America host. There's no question he will earn a HUGE following among listeners in the military.

    •  I did notice the similiarity.... (none / 1)

....but it didn't bother me, not once I heard what he was talking about. Actually, it's sort of a novelty. It sounds like you're listening to Limbaugh, but this guy is railing on Republicans and promoting liberal ideas. So I can dig it.

Oh, and one quibble: Schultz is on Jones Radio, not Air America, iirc.

    •  Remember that (none / 1)

Schulz used to be one of the right-wing radio hosts and used the same style as Rush, with lots of bombast.

He converted to the left (it was a fairly lengthy process, Al Franken interviewed him about this) but kept the same style.

It's similar to Sam Kinison's story. He was a fire-and-brimstone preacher, but then lost his faith. When he switched to stand-up comedy, he kept the same style.

      •  so THAT explains it (none / 0)

I KNEW there must be a reason for the eerie similarity in styles! I didn't realize his views evolved so dramatically, but one of the reasons I like him is that he is open to listeners and takes time to explain why he believes certain things. Not at all a knee-jerk lefty! I think if any liberal radio host can open an audience to a new way of thinking, he can.

I hear him on AM 1150 in Southern California, which is the station that also plays the Air America folks... hence my confusion about that as well.

  •  Kos played a big part in this I'd Wager (4.00 / 2)

I think it's important to remember many of those letters were sent because all you KOSsacks read the origional diary about the show being banned and spoke up. I have a feeling we will be changing many more things with our community in the near future.
  •  This is great news! (none / 0)

It's so important to start getting alternative view points out there. The Right has dominated radio. Time for us to make some headway.
  •  Yea! (none / 0)

I wonder how that woman felt at DoD that was the one who got pissed at ED and pulled the show?

    Showed her!

And it is very, very sad that this was even a fight. It's appalling.

  •  And Tomlinson resigned (none / 0)

last Thursday - the chairman of CPB, which is charge of Air America Radio.  Coincidence?
