If ever there was a more crystal clear display of our society's horrifying mistrust of the creative independence of the feminine (and the hideous double standard that it gives rise to) than what follows (from NPR's "Morning Edition" this morning), I should like to bear (bare?) witness to it:

In Sacramento, Calif., two women were arrested for going topless in protest against several initiatives backed by Gov. Schwarzenegger in Tuesday's election. They were part of a group called Breasts Not Bombs. But down in Southern California, a junior at Chapman College has been allowed to roam free and shirtless for a year. He uses his naked chest to advertise birthday wishes and other student messages at $1 a piece.

On a somewhat related note, today my wife wore here "I voted" sticker on her crotch as a protest against Prop. 73, which is the Gubernator's attempt at pleasing the kind of sickos who criminalize, yup, female creative independence.

By the way, when were in Washington D.C. recently, a friend snapped the following photo. Inspired by my wife, I will post it as my own protest. We'll see how it fares in the dKos community:

      as I understand it the current state of phobia of the female form in American culture ultimately derives from the Puritans and other reformers who were fed up with the licentiousness of the Catholic elite during the Renaissance -- these were the original fundamentalists
      then there was the rise of the middle class in the Victorian era which was all about maintaining proper appearances (while being as deviant and lascivious as possible in private of course) and self-discipline

(forgot the name) is sponsoring a bill in response to these arrests that decriminalize female toplessness, on the grounds that men can go shirtless without any problem, so why shouldn't women? i think it's inspired, both in terms of equality, celebrating the body instead of being ashamed of it, and from a purely practical sense WRT tourism. what better way to get even more tourists than to make LA's beaches more like the mediterranean?

This whole argument went to court here a few years ago... and the court agreed. Women are legally entitled to bare their breasts in Ontario provided a) it's not for titillation (or profit, I guess--I mean outside of the strip club zone), and b) it's not intended or extremely likely to offend.
The gist is there's no problem at the beach, for the purpose of breastfeeding, or in public spaces where one is reasonably discreet about it. It remains to be seen whether the standards could stand up to scrutiny.
Of course, I have been searching high and low for the last few years for some intrepid females to make use of their new freedoms, without success I might add.
