Okay, guys, forget the war on Christmas...
Have a look at the new trailer for Warner Brothers upcoming :"Superman Returns" and tell me how close it comes to blasphemy!
http://supermanreturns.warnerbros.com/...
The text (digitally vocalised by, I am told, the disembodied Marlon Brando) reads:
"Even though you've been raised as a human being, you are not one of them...
They can be a great people, Kal-El, if they wish to be. They only lack the light to show them the way. For this reason, above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you, my only son."
As a long time student of culture and it's deeper affect (and effect) I find this really troubling.
This rewriting of the entire Superman story seems especially pernicious. Whereas Jor-El once came to Earth because his planet Krypton was exploding, we now see that he was sent special by his father (who art in heaven?) to "save" humanity and lead them to the light? WTF??
And really isn't this the kind of Messiah our Christian fundies really want - not some wimpy, turn-the-other-cheek, long-haired homo freak BUT a MACHO - leaping tall buildings - UBERMENSCH!!
SEIG HEIL!!!
Am I right to be disgusted by this appropriation of religious symbolism in such a dangerous way (the will of God and the "American Way" are obviously one and the same, right?)
AND more to the point will this film provoke a righteous response from the Religious Right, and the Bill O'Reillys, William Donohues?
Scary shit IMHO
At least they didn't call it: "Superman Returns: The Second Coming"
