I'm not an experienced political activist and I have never called my fellow citizens to action before, but I have come to believe that the only way to save the city of New Orleans and the rest of the Gulf Coast is to take to the streets of Washington.
More on the flip
Once the terrible dramatic days following the hurricane were over, the slower tragedies began. The evictions, the battles with FEMA, the struggle to feed, clothe, and educate children. And yet, our government continues to fail, just as it failed during the immediate aftermath. It has failed to provide the promised funds for levy reconstruction and it has failed to provide a comprehensive plan for rebuilding. Without funds and without a plan New Orleans will not be rebuilt.
That is why I believe that we need a March on Washington. We need protests to rival the WTO protests in Seattle. We need to fill the Mall with our peaceful anger and righteous indignation. The President and Congress must see that they will not be allowed to fiddle while New Orleans suffers.
I have no idea how to begin arranging such a protest, but I would implore those who do to begin the process. To gather the various groups and to mobilize students.
I for one won't sit silently by and let New Orleans die, but no one ever notices when I take to the streets alone.
