This is my first diary, and what's prompted it is my annoyance with the President's insistance that Iraq's struggles today are somehow no different than America's fight for independence and democracy in the 1770's and 1780's. Before Mr. Bush tries to draw some parallels again, there are some things he needs to remember.
The American Revolution did not begin when some foreign power, say, France, invaded America to end George III's rule over us. French troops did not stay in America for years after the end of British rule to help us along toward a more French-style form of government. American Tories didn't fight an insurgency against occupying French troops, nor was the U.S. Constitution written under the supervision of foreign diplomats.
To put it mildly, the creation of the American democracy was in no way comparable to U.S.-created situation in Iraq, and to imagine that history is somehow repeating itself is an exercise in self-delusion.
