This administration's failure to act when Katrina came is a disgrace. The nation saw just how incompetent George W. Bush and his appointees truly are.
It gets worse. Want to see a perfect example of the concrete results of corrupted ethics? Follow along with me.
A giant sucking ethics hole lies at the heart of the GOP's penchant for corruption and torture. And Katrina victims are about to suffer the consequences.
Badly needed aid for Katrina victims has still not been approved, despite universal agreement that something (from $17 billion to $35 billion) needs to be done, and soon. Congress even set a deadline to pass it...Nov. 17th. Ooops.
In an effort to get this aid for Katrina victims passed this year, Sen. Thad Cochran is seeking to get it added to the "must pass" defense spending bill.
This same bill is one which McCain wants to amend to include anti-torture language.
Dick Cheney's fight to stop that amendment has delayed the bill thus far.
Speaking of DeLayed...
The House GOP will not reconvene until January 31, thanks to Tom DeLay's indictments.
I can't put it any more plainly than Geoff Pender of the Sun Herald:
Congress missed its own Nov. 17 deadline for passing a Katrina relief package, and if such measures aren't approved this week, they could be put on hold indefinitely as the House doesn't plan to return to Washington until after Jan. 31, an effort to give indicted Rep. Tom Delay time to try to clear himself in court so he can be reinstated as majority leader.
So now, the desperately needed Katrina aid gets to wait another two months, and possibly forever. Not because anyone opposes it -- simply because the GOP is addicted to torture and corruption.
Ethics matter.
