Today, I received one of Those Emails, the ones that you are to read then forward to "everyone you know." I'm not sure why this one struck me wrongly, because ordinarily I'd just hit DELETE and not give it another thought.
But for some reason, today, I actually read this drivel, and thought about it. And it bothered me.
Am I getting overly sensitive to anything that could be perceived as being from the Religious <Not> Right? Or is this something we should be on the lookout for in our everyday lives - the subtle propoganda?
PLEASE AGREE OR DISAGREE THEN PASS IT ON:
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG,
OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,
AND TO THE REPUBLIC, FOR WHICH IT STANDS,
ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE,
WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL!
I was asked to send this on if I agree or delete if I don't. It is said That 86% of Americans believe in God. Therefore I have a very hard time
Understanding why there is such a problem in having "In God! We Trust" on Our money and having "God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. Why don't we just Tell the 14% to Shut Up and BE QUIET!!!
If you agree, pass this on, if not delete. .
I AGREE !!!!
Like I said, I usually just hit DELETE. Perhaps it's just that there have been so many instances of Christianity being hijacked by the so-called Religious Right to further their political agendas, or to distract the Rest of Us from what is really going on. It's part of the whole mind set of the "Bush is a Born-Again Christian so I must support him" people.
I sent a message to the friend who sent it, told her I wasn't sure what the purpose of this was since I wasn't aware of any threat to the phrase "under God." She said she didn't know of any threat either, but felt that since it had "always been a part of the Pledge, it should stay." I told her that it actually wasn't part of the Original Pledge, but it had been added during the "Commie Witch Hunt" days. She thought that was interesting, and that was basically the end of the discussion.
Tonight, I was reading the diary about the Young Republicans Convention in Las Vegas, and stumbled onto a quote from Wikipedia:
[Fun Fact! The words "Under God" were officially added to the Pledge Of Allegiance in 1954 to differentiate us Americans from those godless communists. The pledge had no mention of God from when it was written in 1892 until 1954.]
Well, in a matter of a couple of hours, I'd had the same piece of information pop to the surface twice, and I am wondering what is the significance of this "coincidence."
Or am I merely ravingly paranoid?
