The more I read about John Yoo, the more that I am afraid. His apparent views while working for the Bush Administration on the use of torture and the use of wiretaps on US Citizens makes one's skin crawl. By example:
From the NYTimes today, "Mr. Yoo noted that while such actions
(wiretaps by the NSA on US Citizens sans court ordered warrants) could raise constitutional issues, in the face of devastating terrorist attacks "the government may be justified in taking measures which in less troubled conditions could be seen as infringements of individual liberties.""
Ah, no. The idea is that the constitution is quite strong enough in its own right, by giving up our rights we lose our country.
Next up, the Yoo's imperial president and Yoo's views on the president's power to torture, this is from;
http://rwor.org/...
Cassel: If the president deems that he's got to torture somebody, including by crushing the testicles of the person's child, there is no law that can stop him?
Yoo: No treaty
Cassel: Also no law by Congress -- that is what you wrote in the August 2002 memo...
Yoo: I think it depends on why the President thinks he needs to do that.
This is just vile, in Yoo's world the President is able to do what ever they find necessary regardless of the Constitution, in the name of some vague "Global War on Terror" a war that will never end.
That Yoo is at UC Berkeley is a good thing, there his views will be held in the light of day and rejected for the vileness that they are, something that seems not to happen often in this Administration.
