There's a movement in the San Francisco Bay Area to do something about this whole corporate naming thing going on at ballparks, and it's gaining steam, but could use your help...
(continued below...)
The plot is simple. The wonderful Giants baseball stadium at 24 Willie Mays Plaza next to the Willie Mays statue has been called PacBell Park...then, (for ca. $50M for the naming rights) SBC Park...and now the name will change again, since SBC has eaten AT&T and now is in the process of becoming what it ate. So there's a window to influence the name change. A bunch of baseball nuts are urging SBC to 'do the right thing' and rename the park "Willie Mays Field at AT&T Park." They've got an online petition to that effect which you can reach by clicking on http://www.maysfield.org and then clicking on the petition button at upper right. Then you enter your name and a comment if you want to and that's it.
The columnist Jon Carroll has written about this here.
and we think other media folks will be picking this up soon. If we can get the petition looking muscular there's at least a chance that SBC/AT&T will decide to be a kinder gentler telecom and do the right thing, especially since they'd end up looking real good in the process.
Worth a shot, I think. Please sign and tell your friends.
Any help would be appreciated. I know it's not top priority stuff, but still...
Anyway, thanks.
