Towers get rebuilt. Can a Constitution?

Tue Dec 20, 2005 at 01:22:40 PM PDT

All of the recent revelations of abuses of our constitutionally guaranteed rights have resulted in a maelstrom for which the perfect metaphor was the crumbling towers on 9/11.

Remember when intercepts of al Qaeda communications after the attacks revealed they were thrilled with the results beyond anyone's expectations?  They expected severe damage to the towers, not unlike what happened to the Pentagon, but they did not expect both towers to collapse.

...

Our Republic's foundations are under more forceful attack than at any point in my lifetime.  I cannot believe there has been a time in history since the very Civil War where the Republic faced a greater threat.

The abuses of freedom committed by our federal government over a fifty year Cold War cannot compare to the abuses committed during the mere five years of the Bush Presidency.  The Korean War, the Bay of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, and Iran-Contra COMBINED do not add up to the threat we now face.

Children are being detained and abused.  Innocent civilians are victims of chemical warfare.  Iraqi officials admit that the abuse of detainees is as bad or worse than under Hussein.  Everyone wants us out of Iraq but our own leaders.  Our regime has lost any last shred of moral authority.

All we have left is sheer military and economic might, to inspire only fear or envy.  We are now the Roman Empire, looting at will, offering the false promise of never-ending bread and circuses for our citizens.

When will these men (and Rice) see the error, nay, the HORROR of their ways?  How can they be so blind to the evil they have engendered?

This is, of course, the goal the terrorists set out to achieve.  Even in their blind faith, their narrow-minded authoritarianism, their irrational bigotry, al Qaeda never dreamed they could be so successful so quickly in bringing down the real shining pillar of the United States: its Constitution.  Towers get rebuilt.  Can a Constitution?

Now that Islamic radicals have allowed us to cut down our own moral high ground, the hearts and minds of a billion poor Muslims will be far more easily won.  No one in the world community weeps for the victims of 9/11 today.  George Bush ensured this would be so.

I sincerely do not believe that an impeachment attempt will serve any electoral goals for Democrats.  But there may be a moral imperative to initiate such action anyway.  We cannot allow history to view us as complicit in this crisis of the Republic.  And it may serve as a rallying point, and a simple means of delivering to the electorate a list of the horrors of this Administration.

How could this man be so myopic, so cocksure that ANY means justified his ends?  I am encouraged that there are signs of life in our Constitutional checks.  But permanent, not merely lasting, damage has been done.

HEY NSA/FBI/CIA/PENTAGON/CHENEY CABAL!  TRACK MY ASS!  DETAIN ME!  I DARE YOU!
