I want to kiss the groom

Wed Dec 21, 2005 at 06:27:44 PM PDT

Sir Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, were "married" as the first same-sex civil partnership ceremonies took place in England and Wales today.
The singer and the Canadian film-maker travelled from their home in Berkshire in a black car, arriving at the Windsor guildhall to be greeted by crowds of fans. Wearing dark suits, they posed on the terrace of the building.

Sir Elton blew kisses to the crowd as his partner joined him briefly before they went inside the guildhall, where the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall were married earlier this year, for the 11am ceremony.

Congrats to the happy couple and to all the other happy couples in the United Kingdom.

      •  Sounds like Lytton Strachey (none / 1)

The idea of Liza or her hapless ex coming between Elton John and his new groom reminded me of an old story.

Lytton Strachey, a writer and member of the Bloomsbury Group, was brought before a draft board in Great Britain during WWI: the board questioned his claim to being a conscientious objector.  A witty man who happened to be a fabulous homosexual, he parried the board's questions with panache, often causing great mirth amongst the spectators.  When asked "What would you do if you saw a German raping your sister?" he replied slyly, "Why, I would come between them..."

  •  Realistic (none / 0)

Being realistic about this, I think that some states, e.g. South Carolina, Mississippi, will hold out as long as they possibly can.  Unless we can somehow get a either a Supreme Court ruling or a Constitutional Amendment, I don't see it happening everywhere anytime soon.
  •  Over 700 couples were expected to marry today (none / 1)

Congratulations to them all.  I'm pleased to live in a country that has made such progress toward equality, and with so very little public outcry about it.  It's really been accepted very positively in the media and in all discussions.

Okay, you kind of expect that from a government where so many of the ministers have been openly gay, but it's still a good thing.

  •  Fave Canadian slogan borrowed from the US Dems... (none / 1)

    "It's the Charter, stupid."

Adopted by the left/youth flank of the Liberal party, referring to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, used as the best defense against anyone who'd argue that there should be any impediment to the marriage of two adult citizens.
