The One Minute Presidency

Fri Dec 30, 2005 at 09:16:15 PM PDT

The myth of George W. Bush was created atop the mound at Ground Zero where he vowed to avenge the US on the men who brought the Twin Towers down.

I have always believed that the man shouting at Bush from the crowd was a Rove creation who helped the President enact a pre-scripted drama.  The result saved Bush II's first term and gave him a second -- but that is a story for another diary.  Right now I want to focus on the myth of George W. Bush, the protector.

There was a book published in the 1980's called the "One Minute Manager" that said a person could get the skills to manage people in no time at all.  That book comes to mind when I try to understand how the Myth of George II came about.

No one talks about it any more, but when George II made his first statement to the US about the "folks" who destroyed the towers, my only thought was: Oh my God, he looks scared out of his mind.  Needless to say, that is not what you want your first thought to be when your country is under attack.   Then he disappeared for most of the day and we had Rudy Giuliani reassuring us and holding us together.  I recall reading a pundit writing about how the nation held its collective breath, hoping this legacy-admission president would make it all the way from the beginning to the end of each sentence.  That pundit articulated my anxiety completely.  When he did complete a few sentences we were relieved and applauded.  What a good boy.

Then, of course, came the moment that cable news cannot seem to get enough of.  Now known as "The Bullhorn Moment."  George II stood on the grave of the almost 3000 people who perished on that Tuesday morning and answered someone from the crowd.  The words, themselves, are not important.  It was the fact that we could finally exhale.  Erase the doubt.  This man will protect us.  We can "trust" him to protect us.  We needed reassurances because our country was under attack by people and for reasons that none of us knew on September 10.  Finally, we heard words that resonated with our fury and our determination to strike back at those who had worked so hard and so long to hurt us.

He will take care of us.  The Myth of the Bush II was born.  That one minute - the Bullhorn Moment -- gave us the current Bush White House with all of it hubris and law breaking.   They say Rome was not built in a day, but this White House and its second term election were built in that one minute.  At the same time, a lot of people in this country abdicated their responsibility to defend our freedom not just against our foes, but also against our president.  The imperial presidency was reborn.

George W. Bush -- the one minute presidency.

  •  I would say "minuteman" (none / 1)

but that is an insult to the Minutemen of the Revolutionary War.
  •  All I remember thinking seeing him stand (4.00 / 2)

a top the rubble was: "You are standing on top of dead people or maybe even some alive people!!!  Get off the dead people!  Stop doing a photo op on top of the dead people!  Start digging or get the hell out of the way!"

That was all I thought.  So in my mind in that one minute he became one of the coldest and most self serving people I'd ever seen.

    •  That is the flip side one minute (none / 1)

It really crystallized him in people's minds.  But people have such short memories that they can't seem to recall how LOW our expectations were for the guy.  If he was seen walking and chewing gum at the same time, we cheered what a great guy he was.

So often myths are born of a single image in people's minds and this is it for him imo.

  •  You Insult the 'One Minute Manager' (4.00 / 3)

As I recall one of the ideas in the OMM was to take a minute to look into the eyes of your employees.

The Bushiter could care less. There are 2178 dead employees and he can't even face one mother, Cindy Sheehan.

    •  That book just gave me the title (none / 0)

it has nothing to do with the content.  I have just been struck by how everything positive anyone ever says about Bush boils down to that one minute.  I can just hear Matthews falling all over himself about what a wonderful "image" that was.  The fact is that Bush is ALL image.

Leni Riefenstahl created terrific Hitler propaganda out of great images.  I think a little deconstruction of images is needed and this was my feeble effort.  His entire presidency boiled down to this single minute.

  •  Bush's re-election (none / 1)

was probably due to Diebold, not the bullhorn.  See Professor Mark Crispin Miller's book Fooled Again on how the 2004 election was stolen, and this diary on the professor's book talk in Seattle in November.
    •  This is not about elections as much as (none / 0)

it is about a mindset that allowed him -- to do whatever the eff he wanted to.

I don't discount that, but I have studied enough psychology having to do with trauma and I really believe that there was a voluntary suspension of disbelief that enabled him when it is as obvious as the nose on his face that the man is incompetent -- and much worse -- does not CARE about the people of this country.

      •  I was never impressed (none / 0)

with the bullhorn moment.  Bush had failed to prevent 9/11.  Tough talk couldn't make up for that.

I also figured there wasn't going to be another incident for a very long time, but Bushco grounded all planes for 5 days and did their best to terrify everyone.

        •  Good for you (none / 0)

I recall being relieved.  Now that I think about it, though, it really was the cheerleader in him.  What could be more natural for him than standing atop a pyramid shouting slogans into a microphone.  Come to think of it, maybe he should have taken the bullhorn down to the sidelines of the Superdome after Katrina and had a rally.

  •  Fore sure (none / 1)

It did create an image, his image, without doubt.  Then if you think about it, GBW has been about image and no substance all along.  What has he really done (besides eff everything up)?  But he sure know how to pander to the camera!

    Carrier and "Mission Accomplished", anyone?

NOLA, night, a lighted statue and church in the background?

All those speeches in from of cheering and fawning (not!) captive military audiences?

    Plastic turkey at Baghdad International?

Surrounded by firefighter props in NOLA?

    Rough and ready pioneer brushcutter?

And the list just goes on and on.

Life is not a 'dress rehearsal'!

And when did the average 'merican suspend their disbelief and let him get away with anything he wanted?  Bullhorn NYC.

  •  Numbering... (none / 1)

He's Bush II. He's George III. Remember that.

First name numbering is independent of familial linkage. George I served in the late 1700's, George II in the late 1980's, George III was installed in late 2000...

but more importantly, George III is a label with some baggage from an era closely associated with OUR George I. Let's let our George III carry some of that baggage...

To wit (note edits ( ) and ... for greater contemporary accuracy):

He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.

He (manipulated passage) of Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless (altered in) their (substance so that) his Assent should be obtained; ... he has utterly neglected to attend to them.

He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts (or collective bargaining bodies) of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature (DC) (or bargaining - DHS), ... right(s) inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.

    ...

    ...

    ...

He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither...

He has obstructed the Administration of Justice, by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary powers.

He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices, and the amount and payment of their salaries.

He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people, and eat out their substance.

He has kept among us, in times of peace, Standing Armies ...

He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power.

He has combined with others to subject (Iraq) to a jurisdiction ... unacknowledged ... giving his Assent to Acts of pretended Legislation:

For Quartering large bodies of armed troops...:

For protecting them, by a mock Trial, from punishment for any Murders which they should commit ...

For cutting off ... Trade with ... parts of the world:

For imposing Taxes on us without our Consent:

For depriving (enemy combatants), in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury:

For transporting (enemy combatants) beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences:

    ...

For taking away ... Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws, and altering fundamentally the Forms of ... Governments:

For suspending (Iraq's) Legislatures, and declaring (our)selves invested with power to legislate for (them) in all cases whatsoever.

    He has abdicated Government (there)...

He has plundered ... seas, ravaged ... Coasts, burnt ... towns, and destroyed the lives of ... people.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.

    ...

    ...

... A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.

George III, either one.  just sayin'

  •  "The Bullsh*t" Moment" is more apt (4.00 / 3)

I couldn't agree with you more flo58. I was aghast that such a mediocre, lowest-common-denominator performance at ground zero was interpreted as leadership! I saw an inarticulate, ex-cheerleader back-slapping a fireman and shouting a team cheer into a megaphone.  Pathetic.
    •  Yup! (4.00 / 2)

That is precisely what I meant to convey.  So thanks for getting it.  It made a pretty picture so it was "leadership".  But it was understandable given the trauma that we were in that people were just damn relieved to hear the guy sound like he had a brain between his ears.  Now we know that was an illusion, of course.

  •  I love your diary..and I was in NYC (4.00 / 2)

on 9-11 and the one minute presidency day. You nailed it. People wanted a Daddy..and for that one minute..they forgot about "my pet goat", they forgot about Bush flying all over the US after the attack, like a fucking bat. They forgot that 9 months earlier people in Florida were counting hanging chads, and the Florida Supremes proclaimed "Let the counting continue", until the SCOTUS stopped the votes from being counted. That one minute erased everything that had proceeded it and bought him 8 years in the White House...along with The One Minute Presidency..I would also refere to him as, and I am sure the history books will to, as The Accidential Presidency and that will explain the 8 darkest years America has seen since the Civil War. Worst President in the history of the United States. Interesting that he hired all the losers from Past administrations. A total POS.

    It's Obamazing!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Accidental President, the One-Minute President, the Worst President Ever, and I will now add the Cheerleader President to my list.  And it all started with the bullhorn.

  •  Never before (4.00 / 3)

Never before has so much been made of so little. His bullhorn moment didn't say as much about Bush as it did about the public.

Remember when he had nearly 90% approval rating? NO one ever deserves that. I am proud to be among the 10%. I was never fooled. But I bet most on this site were the same.

Remember, THEY hate us for our Freedom! The freedom for the President to do as he damn well pleases.

  •  I want to know.. (none / 1)

one minute presidency is being found out..He is being cornered because the truth is coming out..He is dangerous..He has not told us one truth in all his presidentcy..I cant think of one even when he didnt have to lie to us, he did..Its like he cant tell the truth..Think about this..if he cant tell us the truth about anything, why do you believe him about 9/11..I want to know more about the bombs the firemen and janitors said went off..I want to know more about the plane that hit wash. he said was one model but media said it wasnt..I want to know more about if plane hit WH where was debris..I want to know why, what was the reason we were attacked..What did bush do..Something is being covered up..
    •  Count on it (none / 0)

If Bush is involved -- you can count on some sort of cover up.  He is obsessed with not having people look over his shoulder about ANYTHING!  It probably comes from an overbearing mother if you ask me.

The cruelest irony is that we have a president who does not care a damn about the American people when the people need him the most.  It is all about oil and money and helping his buds.  He is utterly bereft of compassion for the "average Joe".  In fact, he is contemptuous.  THAT is why he scares me.

  •  The fireman wasn't happy (4.00 / 3)

The fireman who George W. Bush kept at his side during the bullhorn moment was not happy about it.

It was a phony, grandstanding moment.

Complete and quick contrast:  Bill Clinton waded right in to the crowds of people waiting for news of their loved ones outside the hospital. No folderol, no ceremony, just very human. To be with the people. Reassuring.
