Mayor calls for gay marriage support

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Marking the anniversary of his decision to sanction same-sex marriages, Mayor Gavin Newsom on Saturday urged gay couples to back politicians who support gay marriage, saying it is time "to hold our elected officials accountable."

"It is no longer acceptable for politicians to come to you every election cycle and ask for money and then say, 'It's too much, too soon,'" Newsom told about 3,000 gay and lesbian supporters during a ceremony to remember the anniversary of last year's "Winter of Love," the four-week period when his administration granted marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The licenses were later voided by the California Supreme Court, which ruled that Newsom had overstepped his authority. http://s4.invisionfree.com/electgore2008dotcom/index.php?showtopic=42&st=0#entry825544

  •  here are two things that symbolize GOP victory: (2.00 / 2)

    1. Al Gore

    2. Gay Marriage

So, you propose we combine the two?
    •  Just reporting the current News (none / 1)

Just reporting the current News, that doesn't mean al gore is supporting Gay Marriage.
    •  Whoa, there (none / 1)

Regarding gay marriage, I do not think that it will be the death of the Democrats.  First of all, they're not really united behind it, and I think that the public perceives that.  Those that don't aren't going to vote Democratic anyway.

Secondly, it's the right thing to do.  Eventually, people will get that.  Conservative morality is probably in its death throws.  It cannot sustain its influence in a world where communication brings together such diverse communities.  Liberal morality will gradually gain more and more influence, and it's better anyway.

Al Gore?  Eh, he's probably behind the times.

      •  I absolutely believe that gays should be (none / 0)

allowed to marry. However, I do not think that it is such an important issue that it should cost us an election. Opposition to torture, illegal wars, the destruction of social security, and a massive deficit are much more IMPORTANT than gay marriage. Now is simply not the time, and the gay marriage issue is distracting Democrats from key issues. Plus it gives the GOP plenty of framing ammo.
    •  Ummmm (none / 0)

      Gore won.

And as to gay rights, was it wrong for the Dems to support civil rights for blacks? It lost them the South for years, but it was the right thing to do.

  •  Sigh (none / 0)

Sigh...If only Gavin Newsom were gay, I'd marry him. A brilliant political mind inside of a beautiful man is the best one can ever hope to achieve in a husband.

    •  I'm sure his wife would agree with you (none / 0)

      Maybe he has a brother?

But, Newsom's point is valid and only one instance of a much bigger problem.  How many times do you hear candidates make huge and lofty promises cough Bush cough Schwarzenegger cough only to hear them, post-election, say 'well, maybe that wasn't such a good idea' or 'we need to focus our attention on ___ (insert appropriate distraction) because  ___ (insert bs).
