How does the religious right condone the torture this administration is practicing in our name around the world? With Bush threatening his first veto over this I think it's high time we take advantage of this issue and hang it around their necks so everyone knows where these morally repugnant low-life's stand. With the front page CIA detention center stories on the front page there isn't a better time. My God, what Hell must these people be going through if Guantanamo is too good for them! Simply raising this question should shock people who might otherwise ignore this...
We are simply failing to force the Christian right to question their blind support of Republicans and Bush in particular using purely secular arguments, so I've got a plan. I would like to see an outspoken, openly religious Democrat (suggestions anyone?), preferably from a red state, lead the charge and make this God versus Bush.
More below...
You know... "the bible says", "Do unto others", "turn the other cheek", "Thou shalt not kill", etc. Democrats are against torture and we have been and will continue to say it till we are blue in the face, but we just don't get the airtime or the public debate such an evil deserves using our current arguments. I'm not advocating our leadership put out a statement with such religious overtones, but that doesn't mean we don't have at least a few members whose personal religious beliefs aren't screaming to say something like this already. Let's turn them loose and find ways to get the message out.
I have no idea what percentage of Republican talking points aimed at Christians actually find their way into church sermons, but it's not zero. I would love to see pastors waxing about morality and have parishioners go home and recognize the evil that Bush is doing. The cruel and inhumane treatment of individuals is abhorrent and the resulting deaths are unforgivable but most people don't put Bush and these acts together and blame him for them. Someone needs to show this to them in a way these people can understand. I just don't see how a god-fearing, bible thumping, Democrat could lose a Fox news interview if he/she is taking the moral high ground given the administrations position.
Finally, we OWN this issue as far as I'm concerned but the public face on too many articles has McCain (who is certainly someone who knows the evil behind torture) leading the charge. The only reason he isn't sidelined is because Democrats are standing there with him and yet we are a footnote all too often. We need someone, anyone, to be so vocal and so critical that we take some of the public notice and get the credit we deserve.
