Guess what? 'Gannon' was in the White House BEFORE April 2003

Wed Feb 16, 2005 at 12:58:40 PM PDT

Now this is an interesting possibility. We've all been howling about how a fake reporter (with a history of prostitution) got into the elite White House press corps mere days after Talon 'News' was created.

WHAT IF he was already in the White House press corps prior to that ?  What THEN ? Is there videotape and/or audiotape from the Feb 28 2003 daily White House press briefing ?

MORE BELOW FOLD

This is in the run-up to the Iraq war, of course, and I just saw these tid-bits in a comment on Rawstory.

First:  'Jeff Gannon' brags on a forum about asking a question of Ari Fleischer on Feb 28 2003 - and curiously no mention that this was his first time in there:

#45 from Jeff Gannon on March 5, 2003 03:26 AM

This is a question I asked Ari Fleischer at a White House press briefing on Friday:

Q There have been reports out of Maine that the children of deployed service personnel are being harassed as a result of their elementary school teacher's expression of anti-war views in the classroom. Could you comment on that?

MR. FLEISCHER: I'm not familiar with any specific report, but I can assure you that the President, in all instances, believes that it's important for all to honor and respect the first amendment.

Not the answer I was looking for, but at least I was able to get the issue in front of the mainstream press.

Questions & Comments

When did GannonGuckert first get in the White House ?

This apparently predates McClellan's press secretary tenure !

At the Feb 10 2005 gaggle, McClellan said, 'He, like anyone else, showed that he was representing a news organization that published regularly, and so he was cleared two years ago to receive daily passes, just like many others are.'

McClellan also says:  'I think he's been coming for more than two years now.'  (Does this mean 2002 also ?)

Further, he says, 'No one's ever brought such an issue to my attention, in my -- during my time as being Press Secretary.'

And:  'My understanding was, when he started coming to the White House about two years ago, the staff asked to see that it -- that he represented a news organization that published regularly. And they showed that, so he was cleared and has been cleared ever since based on that time.'

Ladies & gentlemen, he did NOT represent Talon when he first got in the White House - 'Talon News' did not EXIST until Mar 29 2003 and that was LESS than 2 yrs ago.

Further we have a 'Jeff Gannon' claiming on Mar 5 2003 to have been at a White House press briefing where he asked Ari Fleischer the question above.

Was [update # 1:] Feb 28 2003 his first time in the White House - or does McClellan's 'more than 2 yrs ago' comment mean that 'Gannon' was in the White House posing as a reporter with NO NEWS SERVICE (not even Talon!) to hide behind.

This predates McClellan-as-press-secretary.

This gets curiouser.

[UPDATE # 2:]

And heeeeeeere's . . . a brand-new TERRALERT !

Officials Warn of Future Terror Attacks

1 minute ago White House - AP Cabinet & State

By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Speaking with one voice, President Bush's top intelligence and military officials said terrorists are regrouping for possible new strikes against the United States. . . .

Offering few specifics on Capitol Hill Wednesday, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld warned that the government could reasonably predict attacks would come from terrorism, weapons of mass destruction and other means. . . .

[Update # 3:] Just for info purposes, McClellan was on the staff as deputy press secretary before he became press secretary. As a matter of fact, while he was deputy (and Fleischer was Press Secretary) McClellan did conduct a handful of 'gaggles' - Mar 30 2001, Apr 2 2001, Aug 9 2001, etc. Heck, even Karl Rove conducted one (co-conducted, w / 2 others) on May 29 2001! - what's on that videotape ?

  •  Great Catch! (none / 1)

recommended....now THIS sex story is worthy of an independent investigation....

we know there was abuse of powers here (& not just abuse of a cigar)....

  •  GREAT catch! (4.00 / 10)

Can you continue to research what news organization he was representing then, getting Kossacks to volunteer?

Then you can come over to the Propagannon web site and enter your research in.

    This is fantastic!

  •  Only thing Gannon was publishing regularly (4.00 / 10)

    At that point was, um,

Well, you know what it was.

No, seriously, this would extend the period when Gannon was still actively soliciting escort business and, at the same time, throwing the White House softies.

    •  I just cannot fathom where this story (4.00 / 21)

might be leading. It's all so patently ridiculous -- which doesn't make any of it untrue, of course.

My whole reaction, as this keeps getting worse and worse, is simply WTF?

Imagine if you will this conversation at the White House...

"Gee, Jeff, I want to thank you for coming over.  I really needed that."

"No problem.  Usual time on Thursday?"

"You bet.  So, what are you going to do with yourself the rest of the day?"

"Oh, I dunno.  I figured maybe I'd wander around the West Wing a bit, pop in on some other people I know. After that, I guess I'll go down to the press room, pretend I'm a reporter, maybe ask some goofy questions on NATIONAL FREAKING TELEVISION.  You know, same old, same old.  Got nothing better to do till tonight -- gotta date with a four-star general."

"Heh heh, you dog you!  'K, say hi to Ari for me."

They say the truth will set you free. Me, I feel like the truth is going to leave me feeling like I need to take a shower in pumice and broken glass.

      •  Where this story is headed (4.00 / 9)

In view of this ever-shifting timeline, I ran a Lexis-Nexis search of the "Office of Strategic Influence," that propaganda machine cooked up by the Pentagon in early 2002.  While the operation was supposed to have been shuttered shortly after its existence was made public, I wondered whether it might've continued to exist is some capacity ... and then I found this interesting bit of info from The Independent (London), dated December 17, 2002:

HEADLINE: THREAT OF WAR: PENTAGON TO TARGET ALLIES WITH COVERT PROPAGANDA

        BYLINE: Andrew Buncombe In Washington

        BODY:
THE PENTAGON is considering a plan to establish covert propaganda operations in countries it considers its allies in order to improve America's image and discredit hostile factions.

The plan, revealed yesterday by The New York Times, involves efforts to undermine the influence of mosques and religious schools, perhaps by establishing moderate Islamic schools with US funding. Other suggestions being considered include paying journalists to write stories favourable to the United States and hiring contractors without obvious ties to the Pentagon to organise rallies and demonstrations in support of US policies.

        (My emphasis.)  Skipping ahead ...

Official sources in Washington said the plans - contained within a classified policy document entitled 3600.1: Information Operations - were being pushed by the more hawkish elements of the Pentagon and did not have the support of the Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld.

Last February Mr Rumsfeld was forced to dismantle the Pentagon's Office of Strategic Influence (OSI) after it was revealed that there were plans to provide false stories and "black propaganda" to foreign journalists.

But Mr Rumsfeld suggested last month that while the OSI had been dismantled, its work was continuing. At a press briefing he said: "I'll give you the OSI's corpse. There's the name. You can have the name, but I'm gonna keep doing every single thing that needs to be done."

        ***

So ... is Gannon a by-product of this plan?  I realize the original intent was to shape foreign opinions and media coverage, but what's good enough for Iraq is surely good enough for the U.S.!

        •  FWIW (none / 1)

I think that's great speculation.  An angle that will be difficult to follow, but worth the effort.
        •  Is Gannon a byproduct? (4.00 / 14)

Gannon has said he moved to DC in response to 9/11. Getting a job to be a fake journalist might be a response to 9/11.

(Come to think of it, how weird is it for an ex-marine to respond to 9/11 not by re-enlisting...but by moving to DC to pick up influential tricks?)

Nothing is coming up with a D.C. address.  No connection to D.C. whatsoever.  DE, yeah.  But still, we have yet to pinpoint his move from PA to DE...still looking...

                  •  Could have commuted... (none / 0)

I was born and raised in DE and my fahter commuted to D.C. two - three times a week for about 15 years. It can be done. Amtrak goes through Wilmington, straight line to D.C. (I understand that's how Biden gets back and forth to work), and he could have done that too, quicker than driving through Baltimore to D.C.

He may not have moved at all until he started spending time in the White House; or then again, maybe not even then.

                    •  Oh, so THAT'S why he resigned (none / 1)

Because Bush cut off Amtrak's funding, not because we outed his real identity?

Hmmm. If I were Bush and I wanted to get rid of a little ex-boyfriend trouble, I'd just cut funding for his "ride."

Or ... dare I say, with whom?
                •  According to US Search ... (none / 0)

James D. Guckert has had 2 addresses in Newark, DE, 5 addresses in Wilmington, DE, and one address in Cincinnati, OH.  Absolutely nothing about him living in D.C.
                  •  Got street names for the DE ones? (none / 0)

I realize it may be in poor taste and if you don't want to share I understand, but if you wouldn't mind sharing, it would probably help us to figure out what the price ranges of those addresses are.
                    •  Address information on Gannon (none / 0)

I only ran a name search, to see whether US Search had anyone in their database who fit Gluckert's profile -- I didn't go the extra step and pay the $30 (IIRC) for their profile information.  I figured the more important stuff would be available via a public records search, and I wasn't disappointed:

Delaware has only three counties, and Wilmington is in New Castle County.  There's a site called www.searchsystems.net that will take you to the public records databases for most places around the U.S.  Not every kind of public records search is free, but enough are (marriage, land transactions, etc.) that you can usually find what you're looking for.

Case in point:  New Castle County's police site has a searchable database of registered sex offenders, so I checked there just to see if Gluckert had that additional black mark on his resume.  (Answer:  no.)

More fruitful was the general public records search for New Castle County.  While nothing showed up under the name "Gluckert" (rather surprisingly, given Gluckert's statements about how his family was being harrassed -- implying that his mother lived close at hand), I had a bit more luck when I keyed in "Bedrock Corporation":  namely, the incorporation date for Gluckert's company:  6/19/1997.

You can run the same search by following this link:

                      http://www.ncc-deeds.com/recclkshr/Navigate.asp?SimpleSearch.x=88&SimpleSearch.y=17

Even though the full two-page document isn't available online, they have it on file, which means if someone can get over to the New Castle County records office we can find out whether this was a solo operation, or whether there are any other traceable names involved in Gluckert's business.

Anyway, at the very least this raises the question of what Gluckert was up to between June of '97 and when he started having the porn sites that we know about designed and uploaded.

                      •  Ahhh (none / 0)

his last name is Guckert... not Gluckert.

You may want to look again if you used the L in his name.

                        •  Just did a double-check ... (none / 0)

and nothing turned up under "Guckert."  I'm fairly certain I didn't make that error when I ran the original search, but I've also caught myself inexplicably sticking in an "l" on more than one occasion.  Thanks for catching the mistake; I'd hate to miss something important in a search because of that.  :-)
                      •  Hmm (none / 0)

Can you try your searches again with Guckert (not "Gluckert").
A few posts above you have it correctly spelled, but here - you consistently spell "Gluckert".
                        And thanks for the effort!
                      •  Maybe because his name's "Guckert" (none / 0)

                        and not "Gluckert".
                      •  Thanks... (none / 0)

but I'm fully aware Delaware only has three counties. I was born and raised there, and for that reason was thinking that if someone had addresses we might be able to pinpoint what kind of price range(s) he was living in, may become helpful to figure out what his financial circumstances were, just as a clue I mean.

I understand one of those addresses was Kennett Pike in Centreville (my brother used to have a small starter house in Centreville).

So are you saying with the proper spelling of Guckert instead of Gluckert (I've never made that mistake btw, not sure why, I see no luck in the man's name at all, more like a curse apparently) you have found no Delaware addresses?

Sorry if I seem a little high and mighty about the Delaware thing, I grew up in the small wonder, and being that I lived there for over 25 years, it's kind of funny having someone explain to me the demographics of my own home state. It's one of those things I guess, we used to travel and when people would ask where we were from, they would say "Delaware? I've never heard of it". We'd tell them "it's only the FIRST state".

My apologies if I came off a little brash.

Gannon moves to DC in '01.  I've been thinking about this some.  Talon News/GOPUSA in Texas.  McClellan from Texas.  Fleisher lived in Texas working for Gov Bush?  Can we pin Gannon down in Texas prior to '01?  Seems like maybe he could have moved to be near someone special....

Maybe his 'friendship' with a WH employee goes way back and can be traced to Texas?

                •  Guckert in Texas? Folks, thus far all roads have (none / 0)

led back to Texas.  I've googled "Guckert Texas" and keep coming up with Denise Guckert that was originally mentioned back when this whole search started.  Is it possible that Denise is his mother or sister and he went to TX to live with her?  This Denise is also described as a "Technical Specialist" and her name pops up all over the place in Ausin, TX - where Scott McClellan is from and where the President's wife gave her an award and a grant.  Either that or she could be married to Guckert's brother.  I believe somewhere along the way he mentioned his brother's family being threatened (which I find total BS.)

Could be nothing, but I find it incredible that Guckert moves to DC around the same time that Bush Co moves in and I suspect that he knew somebody in Texas quite well before the move.....

    •  So what you're saying here... (none / 0)

"this would extend the period when Gannon was still actively soliciting escort business and, at the same time, throwing the White House softies."

...Is that he is both a "catcher" AND a "pitcher"?

      •  Think of it though --- - (none / 0)

"Journalists" can come and go at all times of the day/night without "arising" too much interest by anyone else -- a good "disguise" - - if anyone should ask - oh I am a journalist - not the hired guy for the week-end!!

At least you would hope that the "hired guy for the week-end" would peek someones curiosity - though with this White House - who knows.

    •  Where is the Audio/video link??? (none / 0)

      did it vanish?

I don't see it on the 3/5/03 Briefing transcript.

    •  Interesting (none / 0)

I remember hearing about that story and it being used all over as an example of how horrible the Bush-hating Democrats were. I've also noticed over the last couple of days that Guckert was able to "plant" more than one of these stories into the mainstream press through questions at White House press conferences. So, I guess where this leads me is: how coordinated was this? Guckert seems to have been the guy who read these questions of the talking points which then allowed the right wing press and the compliant whores in the RWCM to spread the propaGannon far and wide. Now, the questions still begs to be answered: Why was a male prostitute hired to be the one to do this under a fake name when there are hundreds if not thousands of willing right wingers with journalism degrees who would have thrown the same softball questions? Also, what other stories can we pin on Gannon/Guckert for getting into the press jetstream?
  •  Audio recording (4.00 / 3)

The audio of the question starts at 31:50.
  •  Argh, stupid cspan.org (4.00 / 2)

I'm wanting to view the video to make sure it is him (or at least see if i can) isntead of just ripping someone else's question and claiming to have asked it.  except it keeps telling me the darn server insn't in the dns

Freedom isn't Free, but we shouldn't get ripped off for it either.

  •  recommended - GREAT CATCH (4.00 / 23)

    key:

Ladies & gentlemen, he did NOT represent Talon when he first got in the White House - 'Talon News' did not EXIST until Mar 29 2003 and that was LESS than 2 yrs ago.

At 31:51 (.ram) of the audio of the press conference on February 28, 2003, the voice asking this question is CLEARLY Guckert's:

Q There have been reports out of Maine that the children of deployed service personnel are being harassed as a result of their elementary school teacher's expression of anti-war views in the classroom. Could you comment on that?

Guckert was in the briefing room on Feb. 28, 2003.
