Why Do Democrats Want Power?

Thu Feb 24, 2005 at 12:51:54 AM PDT

It seems that there are quite a few people bemoaning how Republicans, both nationally and in states such as Indiana and Missouri are "doing damage that may never be repaired".  However, to listen to some people, we would think that the one reason to elect Democrats to office is so the Republicans won't be in office.  This was the basic philosophy behind "Anybody But Bush" - the main qualification for being President was simply not being George W. Bush.

Since the Democrats don't define what they would do in office, only what they wouldn't do, they leave the Republicans to define them.  And the Republicans have risen to the bait, claiming Democrats want power in order to make you less safe, raise your taxes, kill your babies, take your bibles, and force you to have gay sex.

My question is simple: Why do Democrats want power?

The main difference between "social liberals" and "social conservatives", IMO, is that social liberals feel that that the power of government should be used to help those among us who are less fortunate; who have by no fault of their own been put into a hopeless situation; who can and will succeed on their own but need help getting started.  Social conservatives, on the other hand, feel that the power of government should be used to improve the nations morality.

However, there is far more to the equation to that.  Another dimension is (to borrow terms from Imre Lakatos) "progressive v. degenerative".  "Progressive" politicians tend to have new plans that they are trying to enact, while "degenerative" politicians try to maintain the status quo and prevent any changes.

A third dimension is the "how much power should government have" dimension.  Libertarians are on the low end of this dimension, and totalitarians and fascists are on the high-end.  However, there is nothing particularly partisan about this.  We can have totalitarian states that try to help the less fortunate (Communism, at least originally), or that try to promote a moral society (Nazism, by it's twisted definition of morality).  I believe that the main problem most liberals have with the Bush Administration isn't the fact that it is promoting "faith-based charities", it's the fact that it has decided that the government can invade Iraq because "Sadaam Hussein was bad", and can torture terrorists because they are evil and we need to do anything we can to stop them.

One of the greatest triumphs of the conservative movement was to identify "progressive" plans for change with "liberal" ideology.  Thus, any "progressive" plans to expand the conservative agenda ironically are more "moderate" than the original plans.  And "liberals" wishing to become more "moderate" do so by attempting to suggest as few new ideas as possible.  Ironically, the conservatives have become "progressive" and the liberals have become "degenerate".

More specifically, "social conservatives" are now the ones who are coming up with new, different ways to promote their policies.  "Social liberals" are mostly simply attempting to protect their progress of the past 150 years, and not really attempting to push any new ideas.

Where are the new "socially liberal" ideas?  What are we still fighting for?  Gay rights would fall in this category, but a good portion of the "socially liberal" part of America still does not support gay rights.  But what are we proposing to help the blue-collar family struggling to make ends meet?  What are we proposing to help the homeless alcoholic?  What are we proposing to help small businesses dying to predatory practices by large corporations?  What are we proposing to help the family farmer?  What are we proposing to help the laborer in Thailand making our clothing?  What are we proposing to help the first-year divinity student working part-time at McDonalds to pay tuition?

If magically the Democrats were to suddenly be in power, what would they do to use the power of government to help Americans who have been put in bad situations so they can succeed?

Do you agree or disagree with me?  Did I say anything silly at 3AM?  How are Democrats going to get FReepers to say we are "ruining government"?
    •  They want to ruin the world... (none / 1)

because Jesus won't return intil they do.

Whenever I ponder that fact, I wonder whether they've considered the after game commentary?

Jesus says to love one another and take care of those less fortunate than yourselves. Jesus also says he's coming back and when he does, he's going to throw all those who don't listen to him in a fiery pit called Hell.

21st century followers of Jesus decide Jesus is coming back and have to do all they can to hasten his return, including every possible thing that goes against his "love one another" philosophy.

So tell me, just which team do you think is destined to get thrown in hell at the end?

[Disclaimer: I do not believe in Hell myself]

Why do Democrats want to be in power? To insure that they, their children, grandchildren, etc... have a future? Hmmm, could that be it?

  •  It's a big question... (4.00 / 2)

and I guess we have to answer it over and over and over again.

First, take a page out of Clinton's economic book and make taxes fair again (pay to play),,,pay the country's goddam bills, balance the budget and create jobs for starters.  For this, of course, you need both House and Senate and the Presidency.

Call off the American Empire 'endless wars nightmare' and get back in league with our allies who can share the load, financially and diplomatically...the UN and 'old' Europe.

Kill Star Wars and use the $$$ for real homeland defense.

Enforce the law and end corporate corrution...jail the sonsabitches and fine their socks off.  This includes clean air and clean water but goes far beyond those obvious ones to include war profiteering, etc.

Take NCLB seriously, adjust where needed and add "No Adult Left Behind!"  Workforce training and retraining, scholarships, K-20 funding increases, raise the tax lid on Soc. Security above $90,000 earned income (mend it, don't end it), invest budget heavily in fixing the failing infrastructure of this country (if it's good enough for Iraq, it's good enough for us) which would create many thousands of family-wage jobs immediately.

Fund and clean up toxic sites.

Extend Health Insurance to everyone...or skip the insurance and just extend health care to all.  That would include mental health.

Actually fulfill the promises to veterans and their families.

Level the playing field economically by enforcing anti-descrimination laws.

Decriminalize drugs...some anyway.  Keep prisons for the really bad and violent folks...and repeat offenders.

Bag the death penalty.  It's a horror.

Invest in homeless shelters and public housing.

Ummmmm....that's it off the top of my head at 1 am...oh yes, one more:  pass a law to make everyone send me their best chocolate recipes and make daylight savings time year 'round.

Tell me how you spend your time and how you spend your money -- I'll tell you what your values are.

  •  One issue (none / 0)

"social liberals feel that that the power of government should be used to help those among us who are less fortunate ... Social conservatives, on the other hand, feel that the power of government should be used to improve the nations morality"

To take one issue, your definition fails to account for church-state issues. If social liberals "feel that that the power of government should be used to help those among us who are less fortunate," what do we do about prayer in school? The argument for social conservatives is more clear. They want prayer in school "to improve the nation[']s morality." So, it's a false dichotomy. The "social liberal" position must be different than what you claim because it can't account for this issue. And, of course, it's not a mere political issue -- it's a constitutional issue. Establishment Clause jurisprudence is very clear that prayer in school violates the First Amendment. If the law is on our side, maybe you need to rework your premise?

    •  hmmmm (none / 0)

I think that it's less about helping the "less fortunate" than about helping those who need help.  That help can be of varying sorts.  So on the church prayer issue, I would be opposed because it isn't right to force those of minority religions (or atheism) to do a particular type of prayer.

  •  You Begin With a False Premise (4.00 / 2)

You stated: "Since the Democrats don't define what they would do in office, only what they wouldn't do, they leave the Republicans to define them."

The above statement is simply false. If you would take the time to listen to the priorities of elected Democrats, you would know this. You have apparently fallen into the trap of dismissing those who disagree with you, versus engaging them in honest debate.

oldpro's comment above entitled "It's a big question..." does an excellent of stating Democratic priorities.  You should print it out and carry it around with you for reference.

Prejudice is too blunt an instrument for my toolbox.
