Rumsfeld admits that he sucks

Thu Feb 03, 2005 at 04:33:03 PM PDT

On tonight's Larry King Live, Rummy breaks the following news:

I submitted my resignation to President Bush twice during that period and told him that ... I felt that he ought to make the decision as to whether or not I stayed on. And he made that decision and said he did want me to stay on.
So let's draw out the implications of this with a simple syllogism:

A)  Rumsfeld said in Congressional testimony that he would resign if he ever felt that he was no longer effective.

B)  Rumsfeld submitted his resignation twice.

C)  Therefore, Rumsfeld had decided that he was no longer effective.

Wow.  Good thing Bush didn't hold him over to the second administration.

  •  This smacks of political theatre to me. (none / 1)

Rummy gets to play the wrongfully accused soldier, humbly and heroically offering to 'take one for the team' in the face of unfair allegations, and Bush gets to play the wise and benevolent father figure by defying the critics and keeping a good man on the job.

I doubt it really happened.  It just makes a good story.

    Here

    Including this gem:

""What was going on in the midnight shift in Abu Ghraib prison halfway across the world is something that clearly someone in Washington, D.C., can't manage or deal with," he said, adding: "I have no regrets."

In other words, just a few 'dead enders' are responsible for dragging our nation's reputation through the mud and blood of Abu Ghraib. What a cowardly response.

    Then, there's this:

"Earlier, Rumsfeld told reporters in Washington that he had "not made a final decision" on whether to travel to the Munich Conference on Security Policy, an annual meeting of defense officials and lawmakers.

The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights filed a suit with German federal prosecutors in November charging that Rumsfeld and other U.S. officials were responsible for acts of torture against detainees at Abu Ghraib. The lawsuit was filed in Germany because it allows for the prosecution of war crimes and human rights violations across national boundaries."

Rumsfeld is well on his way to joining the Henry Kissinger Hall of Fame. Membership carries with it the fear of traveling to other countries for fear of being arrested for war crimes that your own country won't hold you accountable for.

  •  Rumsfeld's Rule (none / 0)

One of the rules for people working (just typoed as "woring," which sounds about right) in the White House:

"Be able to resign. It will improve your value to the president and do wonders for your performance."

    Wonders, eh?

  •  Lame. (4.00 / 3)

Even here, he fails to take responsibility. "I wanted to resign, but he wouldn't let me!"

    Yeah right.
