Fellow Kossaks

Fri Feb 04, 2005 at 12:28:51 PM PDT

Today I endorsed Howard Dean to be the next chair of the DNC.  While I am disappointed that I did not win, I believe Governor Dean - with help from all of us - will be a good Chairman and will help write a new and better chapter to the already remarkable story of our Party.  My full statement is below in the extended entry.

As for you all, thank you.  Thank you for your kind words.  Thank you for your concern about our Party.  Thank you for the money you've raised, the people you've touched, the passion you bring and your fighting spirit that has inspired me every day for so long now.  You are doing good my friends.  Keep it up.   We still have a lot of work to do.

And yes, I will be working hard with you each day to make sure that our Party is stronger and that Governor Dean becomes a successful and effective Chair.

Till the next time,

S

Statement from Simon Rosenberg on the Campaign for DNC Chair

"Effective today, I am ending my campaign for chair of the Democratic National Committee. I am grateful for the opportunity I have had to share my vision with Democrats around the country, and I remain encouraged by the depth and thoughtfulness DNC members have brought to this important process of picking our next chair.

Today, I am endorsing Governor Howard Dean to be the next Chairman of the DNC. While we have not always agreed on every issue, I believe his passion for our Party, his remarkable fighting spirit, his direct and powerful way of speaking, and his commitment to bringing regular people back into our Party will allow him to revitalize our Party and help us win again in the 21st century.

I call upon my supporters, and Democrats from all parts of the Party and all parts of the country, to join me in supporting Governor Howard Dean as the next DNC chair.

Though my campaign is ending, my work and my commitment to the Party that I love will continue at NDN. There I will continue to focus on the three priorities for our Party that I spelled out in the campaign - crafting a better agenda for our Party, investing in and building a better infrastructure for our politics, and leading a new national commitment to nurturing the grassroots. If we can do these three things and do them well in the years ahead, we can once again become a vibrant, dynamic and winning Party.

Finally, I want to thank my staff and my supporters across the country. Their faith in me inspired me each day to fight just a little harder in this important and tough race."

I hope you will consider the job of Executive Director if Governor Dean offers it to you.

    •  Poor Donnie (none / 1)

I don't think he's not a class act--I just think he got blindsided by the tough politics of the race, and is now flailing around. He'll get his head back on his shoulders. (I hope.)

      •  Donnie can still help (none / 0)

All of these people are Democrats right? They can still contribute just like the rest of us. However, there can only be one DNC chair, and Howard Dean in my opinion is the most proven. He's the politician who started actually listening to bloggers and working with the community.
      •  bracing for impact (none / 1)

        i know.

it almost sounds like:  if you're still in the race, you're not a class act.  maybe that's not what it means, but that's what it mostly sounds like to me.

this was an opportunity to gracefully and elegantly make the right endorsements and re-enforce the fact that all of us are on the same team.

i see the first comment here, and, truth be told, while i ultimately agree with the content, it appears to me as if this is seen as an opportunity to take shots at people.  even if those people deserve shots taken at them (and i'm not saying they do), there's a time and place for everything.

i've supported dean for dnc chair since the get go.  and before i do get troll rated, pls feel free to check my comment history about ken and joe.  i'm not shy about telling fellow dems where they can go when they can't get on board with the rest of the party.

I want Lamont to win, but I won't cry when he doesn't.

        •  Nope, not at all what I meant (none / 0)

I was referring to Fowler's behavior on CNN discussed in an earlier front page post.

I had no problem with others staying in the race as far as they wanted to take it.  In fact, I was surprised to find myself energized and moved by Leland from Ohio the other morning as I watched a re-broadcast of one of the DNC candidates' forum on Monday morning.

I'm not a Deaniac or anything, I was really referring to the classy tone of his statement.

You and Dean would be quite a team.
    •  Seconded (4.00 / 2)

I think we have a tremendous opportunity for renewal in the party that will lead to democratic revival. And i firmly believe that the road to that is through the leadership and vision of people like yourself simon, and howard dean.
    •  Well (none / 0)

It was going to be Simon Rosenberg or Howard Dean. If it were Simon Rosenberg AND Howard Dean I don't think anyone would mind.

Now I think it's official that Howard Dean is DNC chair, what happens next?

      •  careful there (none / 0)

        it's official when it's official.

i am cautiously optimistic, that's all I can be after the events of the past four years.

huge thanks to Simon for the graceful exit and endorsement.   I look forward to a great team at the helm.

        •  exactly. (none / 0)

I am still expecting the entrenched old guard to somehow, some way launch a flotilla of filth against Dr. Dean, & it would make sense to wait until some ppl were out of the race before doing it...I'm gonna be holding my breath until it's REALLY over.

    •  hear, hear (none / 0)

I'd hoped that Simon Rosenberg would win the race for chair; my sense was that he brought many of the positives of Dean with less of the baggage. That said, I am not sorry to see the Doctor win the race; he's a canny politician whose views on a variety of issues--stripped of the media distortion--are much closer to those of the American people than the ideologues currently in power. And there are obvious benefits as well as drawbacks to his high profile, which Simon could not boast.

But Rosenberg's ideas and ideals are the future of this party. I was proud to support him and I strongly endorse the notion of his joining Governor Dean's leadership and playing a major role in the Democrats' long-overdue reversal of fortune.

  •  Great endorement! (4.00 / 4)

Good to get the definitive word from the donkey's mouth, so to speak.

I'm tempted to ask a number of questions about where you think things are heading, and what approaches would be most productive, but it seems a little in appropriate to ask you to make more detailed comments when you're ending your candidacy and backing someone else.

I think it's amazing that this race has actually been one where the people around the country were involved. I'm hoping Carville had his tongue in his cheek when he complained about how democratic the process was. Thanks for being at the forefront of the revolution.

Your candidacy was truly valuable--for one, it taught a lot of people about NDN--and I can really look forward to how the party will work, from the ward committees to the national level, online and on the streets. Know that we're not going to let the DNC ignore you.

One question: I've been trying to find out what's going on in the vice-chair race, and having real difficulty. Now that you're "just" an observer, can you (or anyone else) fill me in?

I--without a vote and whose personal mouthpiece blog has been on hiatus since December--supported you for the job.  I appreciate what you've done with the NDN, and that you "get it," as we say around here, about moving the party's power base away from DC and into the hands of the rest of us.  (And I am a Deanista from way back.)

I'm sure that you will continue to influence the direction of the party and the netroots/ grassroots for many years to come.

    Thank you.

Thank you so much for your energy and valuable contribution to the Democratic Party as well to the grassroots networks on the "internets" :-)

  •  Thank You for Your Class and Honor (3.83 / 6)

You didn't agree with Gov. Dean, and stepped forward to offer up yourself and your vision as an alternative, but when the time came to come together and get behind a candidate... you did what was best for the party.

In this age where we often dread members of our own party moving to snipe and grouse at other members of the party under the cover of 'unidentitied sources say' in print or as guests on caustic cable news shout fests... you chose to end your campaign unselfishly and on a high positive note.

You are a class act all the way, and your time will come.

    •  Democratic Unity (4.00 / 3)

I was a Rosenberg supporter from the first.  And while I am disappointed you didn't win, I agree that Howard Dean will provide strong leadership to the party.

I would love to see you post on some subjects related to Democratic unity.

      1.  How can Democratic and progressive groups--the party, NDN, MoveOn, sites like this, Air America, whatever--start borrowing from the Republican playbook and actively work together to wrest control of the national debate from the likes of Frank Luntz and Grover Norquistand, and take our country back from the right-wing extremists?

      2.  What's going on with the Phoenix Project, and how can we as dedicated polical activists assist in that movement?
    •  Why (none / 0)

do we need to have unity before the vote occurs, I have seen this multiple times in the thread...Why is it evil for someone to continue to campaign until a final vote and allow people the option of (horror of all horrors) not supporting Howard Dean.
      •  But your guy bailed (none / 1)

        Roemer, right?
        •  Whatever (none / 0)

I don't even know why I dignify you with a response. I did not support Roemer that's just your conjecture, however I sure as hell don't support Dean and I should hope that has been readily apparent. I just don't get the idea that everybody should drop out and support Dean before the Feb 12th election. I don't think this is a good idea and I always thought elections were about choices, not making other members of the party "fear you" and forcing them to do exactly what you want.

The Deaniacs are always the first to cry about not donating to the party and leaving the party if they don't get their way... I hope the party does well even if Dean is in charge but if he spends the DNC bankroll anything like how his campaign spent $ in Iowa we will be broke in about 2 1/2 months.

Thanks for posting this here.  It means a lot to us to hear from you directly.  Although I supported Dean for the chair, I thought the NDN did a terrific job last year & produced the best ads I saw from any corner.  Really outstanding work, and you would have made a fine chair as well.

I hope we keep seeing you, either through increased activity of NDN, in some executive position within the party, or taking charge of another grassroots group like MoveOn or (heresy or heresies) DFA.

    Thanks for all you've done.

Thank you, Sir!  You are an inspiration.
    •  Thanks, Simon (4.00 / 2)

I had the opportunity to participate in a conference call with Simon at 2PM and encouraged him (as did others) to work with DNC Chairman Dean to make our party as inclusive as possible by working the Net- and Blog-roots. As is evident from his postings here and on the New Democratic Network web-site, Simon was among the first of the so-called moderate wing of the party to "get it." I think he can really help to bring the ABD crowd around. He said that he got to know Gov. Dean better during their recent campaign, that he has alot of respect for him and that he is enthusiastic about working with him at the DNC as well as continuing his work at the NDN.

Simon has made (and will continue to make)a huge contribution to bringing the DNC (and the Party) into the 21st century.  WE should all be grateful to him.

As much as I support Governor Dean--and I do, a lot--I think we had several good choices in the DNC race.  You were one of them, and frankly I'm sad that it's become Dean vs. Fowler, because I think the public attention this race has unexpectedly received is all good.  We rank-and-file know more about the workings of the party, we've gotten to talk openly about competing visions for running the DNC, and we've gotten to know some outstanding Democrats like yourself.

Thanks Simon for your campaign and your endless work for the party we all love.  Your words were inspiring this morning as you spoke of building a new Democratic Party that is unique in our time and values.  I was especially taken with your sentiments not to accept compromise or moderation.   Your commitment to working together to build the new Democratic Party is imperative, although easier said than done at times, our fight is against those that are taking our country in a direction we abhor and not each other.

Thank you for all your hard work and for being a beacon of light to us all.  Rest and get rid of that cold.  We need you, our party needs you.

  •  Thanks Simon (4.00 / 2)

You would have been a great chair, too.
  •  Thank you... (none / 0)

for this post, and all the work you've done to date.

I was one of those inspired by Dean to take action during this election and he was also the recipient of my first-ever donation to a political candidate. Based on my experience with Dean and DFA, I supported him as a candidate for DNC chair.

I knew little of you before your name was raised in relation to the race, but what I learned about you I liked and was happy to support your candidacy as well, if nowhere other than in my own head.

Part of what sways me to support a candidate  is the caliber of their supporters and your most vehement supporters have been almost uniformly intelligent, passionate, and likeable. Sounds goofy, perhaps, but I think that's a mark of achievement.

And this post was, in itself (and forgive the expression), the sign of a class act. There's so much infighting and backbiting so, for me, this counts for a great deal.

    Thanks again.

  •  Good show Simon (4.00 / 7)

I was in your corner, but it looks like Gov. Dean grabbed the momentum and kept it this time. You clearly know as well as I do that he's a good man for the job. But if he's going to pull this off, he's going to need a few good men to watch his back. You've got skills that he doesn't. I hope you'll put them to good use.

Since I've started voting, I've never registered with a party. The Republicans were a lean mean fighting machine that I could be proud to be a part of, except for the fact they generally stand for everything I stand against. The Dems were a bunch of sad sacks whose hearts were in the right place, but who had all the vigor and fighting spirit of, say, Vichy France. Now, for the first time in my life, the dead wood is starting to burn. If the Democracy is ready to march, you can count me among the front lines.

Simon, you're great, and stay tuned 'cause you're needed in this fight.

Carville has IMHO spent a little too much time on CNN.  And I'm awfully curious about what goes on in that marriage.  A scary thought.

Nevertheless, when James gets heated up and puts a good rant on the Forces of Darkness, he can put the blood to stirring.

I have often fantasized that, were I to run for office against a Publican, I would want to do some righteous negative ads, to be written by James Carville, with voice-overs by Dennis Franz (who plays Det. Andy Cipowicz on "NYPD Blue").

Thank YOU, Mr. Rosenberg.  For being so open, forward-thinking, and progressive.  Even though you're no longer vying for DNC chair, I know you'll continue to do great work for our party.
  •  Graciously done, and thanks. (4.00 / 6)

Only in the last few weeks, with the DNC race and the signs of life in Congressional leadership have I decided to come back to the Democratic Party after 7 years as an unaffiliated voter.

You were a significant part of that.

I have an NDN story I think you'll appreciate.  My father was visiting me in October, and we talked politics. While our convictions our similar, his cynicism was even greater than mine-Democrat though he still was registered.

He was sure that it was all going to hell in a handbasket, and that the best thing would be to protect those close to us and prepare for the fall of civilization, so to speak. He admitted he was ill informed because he'd been relying on the media, but he's a stubborn cuss, and hard to move in the direction of hope.

After arguing with him that we couldn't afford that I went to bed. He was noodling around on my computer, because I'd told him to start looking around on Dkos, and other sites for more reliable information about Senator Kerry and the race in general.

Somehow, he found himself on the NDN site. The work NDN was doing with Hispanic outreach convinced him to send money to NDN, and several other outreach groups.  Moreover, when he and my mom went back home, they started looking for local opportunities to help. They volunteered for the GOTV effort in our home town.

I was so proud of him, and of my mom. Even more than usual, if you're reading, Daddy.

Thanks for helping me turn my father from a cynical bystander to a cynical activist.

Before you win, you have to fight. Come fight along with us at TexasKaos.

  •  Great to see you active on Kos (4.00 / 2)

Wow, we're attracting the biggest names in the party to join our community these days.  I've never felt so involved in the political process as I do now that luminaries like Barbara Boxer and Simon Rosenberg are addressing Kossacks in our own house.

DailyKos is becoming a nationwide constituency, and the smartest, most in-touch leaders of our party are recognizing this.  It can only lead to great progress.

Thank you, Mr. Rosenberg, for coming here.  Please continue to do so and we'll continue to provide you up-close and personal support and feedback.

  •  From a non-Deaniac Dean supporter (none / 1)

I'm just a little blog reader and don't know much about the chairman-picking process. I like Dean, but I thought the concept about hating all Republicans was pretty stupid, and I have no idea whether I like him more than I like you.

I ended up posting a few posts here in favor of Dean because it seemed as if the debate ended up being about whether Dean should lead the party and have the Democratic party continue to be a progressive and/or moderately liberal party, or whether someone else should lead the party and turn it into the Gerald Ford Republican Lite Democratic Party.

I know that you are progressive, and, personally, I'm quite moderate and like John McCain, but I don't think the Democratic Party should collapse in a puff of horror just because Kerry "lost" by (at worst) a few hundred thousand votes in Ohio. If Democrats want to change some positions and figure out how to explain ourselves better, that's great.

But I think that at least trying to find some way to strengthen and maintain the Democrats' distinctive voice is more important than any one individual, and I think that even a principled conservative like McCain would agree with that.

So, I'm very sorry about whatever personal headaches/unpaid credit cards/giant mountains of unopened mail that you're probably facing because this didn't work out quite the way you'd hoped, but I'm happy that you see how important it is to work for the good of a strong, distinctive Democratic Party right now.

If the Republicans really are just bumbling plutocrat-lovers who believe in a tough-love approach to foreign policy, then maybe the worst that we'll end up with by 2007 is a little more of the gray, grim world we've endured for the past 4 years.

But, if it is true that a group of neo-Republicans with a taste for one-party rule is in charge, then maybe there's a 1 percent chance that what we're going to see is an Argentina-style oligarchy, complete with concentration camps and bodies buried in unmarked grave.

Keeping the Bush administration from turning the lights on at the concentration camp in Fairbanks, Alaska, has got to be the top priority. But I think the Democratic Party can keep the lights off in Fairbanks only if its leaders make a habit of standing up for themselves and speaking their minds about other issues.

  •  Simon: paging the Vast Left-Wing Conspiracy.. (none / 1)

Simon, we met briefly in Sacramento 2 weeks ago at the Radisson hotel, over dinner Friday night before the conference -- and spoke of your TV News producing days with Linda Ellerbee's "Overnight".

Her wry closing "And so it goes..." is probably somewhat apropos right now... I just want to say thank you for running a straight-forward, idea-based campaign for the DNC Chair. What you have created and continue to build out with the Phoenix Group and NDN is, in my book, one of the most critical, visionary, and catalytic infrastructures necessary for shoring up and stabilizing the Democratic Party. We have so sorely lacked a sophisticated message creation and multi-platformed delivery system. I  very much look forward to working closely with you and with Howard Dean to help execute parts of that vision.

After you've rested, please drop me a note so I can apprise you of where things stand on the Progressive Cable TV Network we are building. Best Wishes,
