John Fund spills the usual amount of bile in today's WSJ editorial, questioning the will of the "hard-left wing of the Democratic party," and noting that "Mr. Lieberman's campaign is showing signs of renewed vigor." Heh.
Far more entertaining than that, though, is his conclusion: that "if next week, political commentators wake up and find... [that] Mr. Lieberman has overcome the vitriolic onslaught of the liberal bloggers, they will have to acknowledge, that reports of the death of the moderate wing of the Democratic Party have been greatly exaggerated."
The vitriolic onslaught of the liberal bloggers...hmmmm. As a resident and registered voter in Connecticut, I had to pen the following reply (and I post it here, only because I'm reasonably sure the WSJ won't let a rebuttal see the light of day)...
I'm both a reader of the "liberal bloggers" and a citizen of the great state of Connecticut, and I can tell you without hesitation what the greatest influence on my position has been: the record of Mr. Lieberman himself. His unapologetic support for the occupation of Iraq, school vouchers, the nominations of John Roberts and Samuel Alito (yes, he technically voted against both, only after helping to break the filibuster of each nomination), and such memorable quotes as "We undermine the president at our nation's peril" and "A rape victim in Connecticut should only need a short ride to another hospital" have led me to an inescapable conclusion: this is a candidate that no longer shares my views. I look forward to August 8th, when I can cast my vote for Ned Lamont, and hopefully to the ensuing three months, during which I can campaign actively for his election to the U.S. Senate.
If Mr. Lamont does win the Senate seat, I hope you will acknowledge that reports of the death of the progressive wing of the Democratic party have been greatly exaggerated.
UPDATE: In the "credit where credit is due" category, the response actually saw the light of day after all:
