My visit to Freeperland (w/poll)

Wed Feb 09, 2005 at 12:23:37 PM PDT

Here's my story of being bounced from Free Republic. What's yours?

It took me three posts to get tossed.  I was responding to a post on the supposed repression of free speech of someone who supports reparative therapy, making the gay straight.

I tried to be really nice.  I merely asked if there were any studies on reparative therapy; I thought I sounded like a moderate Republican--at least that was my goal.  I was not even taking a strong position one way or the other--but I was bounced nevertheless.

At first, I laughed.  But on second thought, it was  disturbing--those folks cannot tolerate free discourse.  It is as if they did not want me providing contrary data corrupting their one-way minds.

Below is some classic Freeperlandia

Here is the Free Republic thread I was posting to.  I was "SKM" over there.

Here is the post that prompted by first post:

>>>>>Oh, that's rich coming from the "we're 10% of the population so you'd better do what we want" crowd.<<<<<
I can't effing STAND THIS ANYMORE.... what do we have to do to make this 10 percent GO AWAY????? My GOD, all they initially wanted was equal rights now they think they run the world.

Here is my response in italics as recorded by another Freeper (my original post having been deleted.)

To: SKM

Where do you want them to go? The issue may be one of free speech, and no-one's speech, should be infringed, but is not the gay community entitled to speak?

The 1.8%-of-the-population gay community certainly doesn't suffer from a lack of free speech, does it?
And welcome to Free Republic.

Here is another Freeper response to one of my three itty-bitty posts:

To: SKM
There really is only one question that needs to asked in any question regarding this subject, and that is this: Do you believe the homosexual act is sexually perverted. If you answer "no", then you are a homosexual. If your answer to that question is "yes" than all other questions regarding this subject are clear.

Here is a portion of my second post, as recorded by a Freeper:

To: SKM; EdReform

Does anyone have any data on whether reparative therapy actually works?

Ed, do you have the Wall Street Journal interview with Dr. Robert Spitzer and his research study on ex-gays? He finds that "change is possible".

Since I actually got a response that was not "crazy" here, I thought I had a shot at some additional dialogue.  Silly me.

More Freepernalia:

Where do you want them to go?

How about reparative therapy?

And here is a highly unusual substantive response:

To: SKM
This isn't a case of letting the gay community speack. They speak all the time. The problem is caving into their demands simply because people are afraid of looking prejudiced.
The issue here is does someone have the right to talk about changing sexual orientation? Yes, they do. The only ones who don't think so are the gays and the liberal left because they simply won't admit that change can take place. The country is full of people who have changed. I have see videos of interviews with ex-gays. The proof is there, the gays want to ignore it, because it doesn't fit it with the "we are victims and can't help it" theory they employ to make everyone cave in to their demands.
It is time that these 3% of the population are made to realize the country doesn' turn on them.

Here is a substantive, polite response that is really freepy, creepy:

To: SKM
I am NOT advocating the following kind of research, but there is eveidence that sexual desire can be changed as well. Dr Robert G Heath of Tulane university (a very controversial "doctor" if you look him up) inserted electrodes into a homosexual man's septum, and when activated, the electrodes would cause the man to experience "an orgasm-like sensation." The man was shown heterosexual pornography and was aroused enough to a state where he could have sex with women (temporarily, anyway). I'm not saying that homosexuals should be treated with electric-shock therapy, but sexuality is mental as well as physical. If the mind can be "shaped" then so can sexuality.
How are people with other sexual addictions treated? Particularly those who can only be aroused by porn? These people lack the ability to have a true sexual relationship with another person. The more perverse, the better it is for them, until nothing can satisfy them enough. If this kind of very dangerous sexual addiction can be treated, then why not homosexuality?

It is ironic that homosexuals used be called SSAD (Same Sex Attraction Disorder) by the AMA but now they're "gay!"

And, here is the explanation of how and why I got the axe:

To: Mulch; scripter; EdReform
I was wondering how long SKM was going to last, talking about being "rewired" like you are born that way. Not that I don't mind new pro-sodomy trolls, she was disrupting the purpose of this thread. And that is we need to email the fairfax county school board and support Stephen Hunt.
I wish the Admin Moderator would put this thread on the activism side board.

So, it was the comment about reparative therapy "re-wiring" folks that did it. It looks I lasted about 30 minutes in Freeperland.  Has anyone been able to hang out there for very long?

  •  It may strain credulity (none / 1)

    - but I have posted something between 150 and 200 comments on Free Repugnant without ever saying anything I don't mean, and I still haven't been bounced yet. I guess the key to this longevity, which I certainly did not expect, is that in addition to being exceedingly polite I've only been defending things (chiefly Europe and the UN) and abstained from attacking Bush or other objects of their personality cult. The experience has been interesting and unpleasant in equal measure, but lately I've grown tired of their hatelful ranting and now rarely visit.

Two observations: (i) Kossacks write a lot better and are immeasurably funnier to boot - the quality of snark on Free Repugnant is abysmal. (ii) Perhaps this will be a bummer for some, but DKos is not a prominent object of hate and disgust at FR, and actually is rather seldom mentioned. DU is what they take to be the hotbed of 'lefty lunacy,' as well as the 'evil' counterpart to their own site.

Of course they don't believe in free speech.  They believe in ideology... their ideology.  Everything else is "subhuman".

Look, I've known, and know, many of the freeper persuasion.  And this is why I continually admonish moderates and liberals to get involved in the shooting sports.  Because if those in Fascist Land ever had a chance, they would turn this nation into a police state.  And there are more of this ilk than one might realize.  And they truly are a frightening bunch.

  •  Thought Experiment... (4.00 / 2)

What if you stuck the same electrodes into a heterosexual and show them HOMOSEXUAL pornography?

Can you flip sexuality both ways???

I suggest testing this out with some 'representative' Freepers. Heck, whether or not it works, it would be fun to administer the electric shocks.

Hmmmmm then again, I bet this has already been done at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo...

    •  I wondered the same thing (none / 0)

By Freeper logic, we could take one of "them," preferably one who is actually straight and not a repressed latent homosexual filled with self-hate, and convert him into a homosexual with a battery of shock devices and gay porn.  At this point the Freeper could go out into the world and enjoy the gay "lifestyle" as if he were never attracted to women in a past life.

It's amazing that anyone actually believes this.  Apparently the Freepers found a lone nut doctor who thinks the same way they do, and so parade his opinions around as fact.  Yet when the medical community is shown to be in near unanimous agreement that abstinence sex ed doesn't work, the Freepers don't listen.  Talk about cherry picking evidence, they are right up there with Cheney.

I have posted some remarkably leftist stuff on LGF and not been bounced.

Just by being polite and defending your arguments you can raise the level of discourse single-handedly.

If you have a thick skin and and can write bullet-proof arguments (they will demand prove for EVERYTHING you write) there is an chance to through some doubt into their universe of absolutes.

That's what I'm on about. Did you see him repressing me?

  •  Okay, as an experiment (4.00 / 2)

I registered about an hour ago, and posted in a Ganner/Guckert thread. In reply to someone who doubted that "Ganner" was a pseudonym, I posted a link to this article in "The Conservative Voice", encouraging a look at the links therein, and also added this link:

    http://www.tkema.com/Minutes.htm

to Guckert's fraternity minutes, and quoted someone recollecting seeing Guckert in the White House press briefing.

My post (#747) was removed in less than one minute, and my posting privilege evaporated immediately. It was a bland and unobtrusive post, merely pointing the way to an answer to someone's question, found on a Conservative site!

Maybe it had something to do with "hifreepers" as a user name. :^)

    •  My brief trip to freeperland... (none / 1)

was during Theoria's lodging troubles in NYC for the Repug convention (god, that seems so long ago). I registered (in reponse to an open dare by em dash - who was going to send cash to theoria if someone posted the story of FR) under the login "fuckkerry". I posted the link with the line "how do we like these (link) apples". my comment was gone before I posted the link here and I was banned within minutes.

Thankfully, em dash hooked theoria up anyway..
