I know, I know. There's no way that the House will ever impeach Shrub, and there's no way the Senate will ever convict him. I have two words: Evan Mecham.
Mecham, for those who don't know, was governor of Arizona from 1987 to 1988, when he became the first governor in 60 years to be impeached and removed from office. He was already facing a recall election for grossly insensitive remarks about blacks, women, gays, Asians and Latinos.
During this tempest, it came out that he'd tried to conceal a large campaign loan that made his narrow victory possible. He'd also made a state loan to his car dealership and directed the head of the state police not to cooperate in an investigation. The state legislature, with a large Republican majority in both houses, impeached him and removed him from office.
Bear this in mind, guys--at the time, Arizona was a DEEEEEEP Red state, not the swing state it is now. And yet, a state legislature dominated by Republicans impeached a Republican governor and removed him from office.
So yes, it can happen.
