I find, more increasingly, that I cannot bash conservatives. And no, I'm not talking about people like Shawn Hannity and Rush. I'm talking about your average run-of-the-mill conservative who makes as much money as you do, with the nephew in the Marines, and the "Support Our Troops" magnet on their car.
I decided not to get into "our" picket line and just go over to the other side and observe. I took a look at the art (mostly just stuff drawn on regular pieces of paper in Magic Marker) and listened to the rumblings of the crowd. Someone from "our" side of the line produced an old USSR flag, which elicited calls of "commie!" and "that's the difference between our side and theirs".
I got what the guy was trying to say. Just like I get what Stephen Pearcy is trying to say with "T'anks Mr. Bush". What we don't get sometimes is that this kind of stuff is lost on these people. We need to get smarter folks. If we're going to keep preaching to the choir, we're going to keep losing ground.
Our goal is not to convert those who will never change. But sometimes we get lost in our own cleverness and lose those who are, in fact, good people and simply support things out of fear. These are the people we should be reaching out to.
I want to see somebody in the Democratic Party who believes that "reaching out" to these people means more than just acting hawk-ish or speaking in some weird code on abortion.
Quite honestly, Progressives are the ones that are going to have to do this. We have to put the same minds that are currently thinking of new ways to be ironic or satirical, into thinking of new ways to win this thing.
