Elizabeth Edwards - the media, blogs and John

Thu Mar 03, 2005 at 07:14:11 AM PDT

Five Minutes with Elizabeth Edwards
From a February 14 interview in Campus Progress via JREGrassroots,

What Mrs. Edwards has to say about the media and blogs:

EE: After the recent election I've been spending a lot of time on channels that have to do with garden landscaping because it was just easier for me, less heartburn. I just get very frustrated listening to mainstream media, like they will report that the new budget increases money for Pell Grants. I just want to say, I beg your pardon? They're cutting off 90,000 people from those grants, and it isn't even part of the discussion.

I do listen to CSPAN in the car and Air America and Talk Left radio. I read the Washington Post and the New York Times. But I go to a lot of websites, I spend a lot of time on the internet. I get a lot of information from blogs, I have a whole list including Talking Points, Daily Kos, Democratic Underground and more. Sometimes I check out the right wing sites to see what they are talking about. I have a whole folder of sites and I open them all up every day and see what catches my eye.

We have a friend at Vanity Fair:
CP: How is Cate doing?

EE: She's in NY now, she expects to go to law school in a few years. She's working right now as an editorial assistant at Vanity Fair.

What a good husband and father John Edwards is:

CP: Happy Valentine's Day! Any plans?

EE: The truth is, I look really lousy so John said I could pick the restaurant and he'd go out and get something and we'd have dinner here. This morning John made pancakes for the kids and cut them into heart shapes and we left them cards and everything. And then he made me eggs and cut those into hearts too.

Elizabeth, if you are reading this, know that you are in our hearts and prayers. We wish you strength and good health as you recover from chemo and radiation. You are an amazingly strong woman and a wonderful example for all of us!

This country needs people like you and John to reset the moral compass.

    Best wishes!

  •  I second that (4.00 / 19)

If you are reading this diary, Elizabeth, know that you are appreciated for your courage , compassion and strength. Speedy recovery to you. Caught your appearance on CSpan in a town hall meeting back in the day. Your answers to questions were the most succinct and informative of anyone's during the run up of the debacle , otherwise known as the election.Wish people like you could run for office.
    •  my dad, a registered Republican... (4.00 / 11)

referred to Elizabeth Edwards during the campaign as "a fucking rock star." He was absolutely blown away by her, and it probably contributed to his voting for Kerry (though the fact that he loathes Bush didn't hurt either).

I agree with his assessment. We love you, Elizabeth--get well, stay well, and keep fighting.

      •  yeah! (4.00 / 6)

        It took me a long time to appreciate Theresa Heinz-Kerry, but i warmed to Elizabeth Edwards immediately.  She's from MY planet. :}

I trust Obama's judgment more than I trust my own. Why are YOU telling him what to do?

      •  She is the best spokesperson for the Democrats. (4.00 / 5)

I wish we could have her on all the shows explaining the Democratic POV on all of our issues, programs, etc.

I've never heard anyone else explain complicated policies and programs in such a warm, cogent, non-condescending, informative way.

Get better Elizabeth!  We need you!

p.s.  I love the fact that you read all the same sites I do.  No wonder I think you make such sense.

        •  Spot on ... (4.00 / 3)

Listening to Elizabeth Edwards was one of the most pleasant surprises of the campaign for me.  She is incredibly eloquent; comes across (is) absolutely sincere; handles questions directly; plays audiences well; ...

With all due respect to her husband, if John Kerry and John Edwards had come off anything like Elizabeth, election would have been a landslide the right way.

        •  Agree! (4.00 / 4)

I saw one of her town hall meetings on CSPAN during the election season, and thought.. why isn't she running for office?  Or at least running some kind of seminar to teach our Dem talking heads how to talk to regular people?   She really gets it.
          •  I Heart Liz Edwards (none / 1)

I went to a town meeting starring her in Battle Creek, MI, and I was, to quote another poster, blown away. She's got intellect and poise, and she's just sweet and warm and loving.

Can I change my Feingold/Boxer '08 plea to  Feingold/Edwards '08 (John Edwards is a big improvement over Lynne Cheney!)

And again, best wishes to Mrs. Edwards for a speedy recovery. Cancer is no picnic (although the anniversary take-out idea is cool!).

    •  Why can't she? (4.00 / 11)

Once she is feeling up to par, why can she not run for office? I think she has a very good chance. She is more intelligent than Elizabeth Dole and speaks and answers questions a lot better than Hillary.  I saw her interview on Keith. He and I were both impressed. Quick to the draw. No stumbling and heming and hawing. Just intelligent and honest answers. And I was thinking, a great First Lady or President.

And I hope her husband does not sink into the sunset either. One of the things that was never really pushed about John is that he is OVER 50! Everyone talked about his boyish good looks and a lot of people thought he was a kid. And next to Cheney, well 'nuff said there. Everyone looks young.

But I believe they could be a very powerful political couple.

I always look for information on Elizabeth's health and progress and I just want to say, put on the red hat and purple coat and You Go Girl.

I'm voting for the Democrat! End of story!

  •  I just love her. (4.00 / 14)

She would have been quite a presence as our Vice President's wife. She's a wonderful woman, a terrific inspiration, and a fantastic wife and mother. I admire her greatly and wish her all the best in her recovery.
  •  Thank you, Elizabeth (4.00 / 16)

for all your sacrifices for our country.  I know that your first reaction will be that your sacrifices are not so much compared to others', but I am not talking about others, I am talking about you. You and your husband make lawyers look good, and your gift of public service in response to your son's death, and having more children as a response to loss and grief bespeaks the authentic culture of life you immerse yourselves in, not just glibly spout for public consumption.  This love and respect for life will serve you well as you do what you must to recover from your illness.   So, I gratefully raise my coffee cup in salute to you this morning; and to Life!

Your lips (or typing fingers?) to God's ears. I would love to see that happen!

I don't know what I can say about Elizabeth Edwards that hasn't already been said. She's a terrific woman, and I too wish she would run for office!

    •  Agreed (none / 1)

this is my prayer.  I supported John for the gitgo and saw him in Toledo twice.  I hope you can feel the love and strength that we send to you, Elizabeth, and that it gives you the power to get well.  I was at a phone bank in Toledo Ohio the day before the election.  I am really short so my husband found a chair for me to stand on so that I could see you.  I thought you looked tired but that was certainly understandable and everything you said resonated as the absolute truth.  When I heard that you were ill days later I was so sad and I have remembered you in my prayers often.  Get well and our best wishes to you, your lovely family and your talented husband.

If you are reading this, I just want to say that you NEVER 'look really lousy.'  You may not feel great and your outward appearance may not be as polished as you would like on some days, but you will never look less than a strong, beautiful woman, with great character.  Thanks for everything you have done and I hope you feel better soon.

  •  Elizabeth Edwards is the cat's pajamas. (4.00 / 6)

She is a class act of the very first order and my god in heaven can we please have her in the White House instead of the present First Lady?
  •  she's sexy AND smart (4.00 / 6)

    If you weren't married...
  •  Hi Elizabeth! (4.00 / 5)

Just a quick note to echo all the positive sentiments you're getting this morning. I'm a flaming liberal, even by Chapel Hill standards, and was very happy to hear you're returning to the southern part of heaven. Tim T. and I are good friends, neighbors and old business partners, and he tells me you're eyeing some land out our way. Very wonderful news. And Pat O. (also a neighbor) speaks so fondly and highly of you.

If you decide to resume kicking ass on a big scale, this is a great platform to work from. I'll keep my eyes peeled.  Cheers!

  •  Elizabeth is awesome (4.00 / 7)

I've never really felt any strong personal attitudes towards First Ladies or family members of candiates I support, but Elizabeth Edwards is the exception.  She has struck me in pretty much everything I've read about her as a wonderful person, and someone who cares as deeply as John does about making things go right for people.  I hope she gets better soon.
  •  I think your husband and John Kerry (4.00 / 7)

WON the election on November 2, 2004. It's just extremely frustrating that the MSM only covered Ukraine's fraudelent elections.
    •  I couldn't agree more (4.00 / 3)

I am in Mississippi now but I lived in Toledo Ohio during the election.  In my little community I was shocked by what I saw.  The election was stolen!  I stood in the rain the night before the election with thousands of people who wanted to cheer John Kerry to victory.  The airplane hangar that was being used for a rally was filled to capacity and thousands of people who had waited in the cold rain were turned away.  And, though it all the disheartened fans were cheering for Kerry/Edwards on the way back to their cars.  There was a momentum there that was picked up in the polls but not in the votes.  Why?  Many of us know why.  The election was stolen.

Please know that we love you and you are in our prayers.  Take care of yourself and your family.  We will be waiting for you to be back in public, heathy, and the wonderful side kick to John in the future.
  •  Not one individual (4.00 / 5)

involved in that whole election mess comes close to the class, dignity, and intelligenge of this women. I was so impressed with her. My heart sank when I learned of her health problems. All my prayers, hopes and thoughts of good go to you Mrs. Edwards.
You make us all so very proud.
  •  You gotta love the Edwards! (4.00 / 8)

They are so real and a great example for Democrats and for Americans in general.

Man, they sure are your typical "evil" Democrats aren't they?

I wish Elizabeth a speedy recovery and wish her family the best.

  •  EE- You are an inspiration! (4.00 / 4)

Thank you for just being yourself.

By the way, John may want to add "man eggs" to his breakfast menu. (Fry some eggs for eyes, some toast for glasses, pineapple ears, maybe a bacon mustache...) My big brother used to make them when I was a kid. (He passed away when I was 10 and he was 18.) I make them for my 2 year old son now.

Wow. how off topic was that!?! I guess that shows how comfortable you make me feel.

Best of luck to you and your family.

    •  Oops, I thought... (none / 1)

may you feel better soon. we are all pulling for ya.

    •  Oh, yes (4.00 / 2)

I read that.. it was in Elle.  (Great magazine - while I'm on it, everybody should go read the article in the March Elle on family politics & the lack of a real support system for mothers in this country - it's a terrific piece and addresses a whole lot of assumptions about our society and all the problems of the "personal responsibility/do it all yourself" approach, in a plaine common sense kind of way.)

It makes me kind of sad to reread this piece in retrospect, the first time around I really thought JK/JE were going to win.

Just starting to read it, but this really is the way for Democrats to win over 20 and 30 somethings with young families.

Otherwise, they're won over by the simple GOP child tax credit.

        •  Thanks! (4.00 / 2)

Yes, everyone GO READ.  (Elizabeth Edwards, you too! :)  It's the big picture of this piece that really struck me.  An opportunity.  Why are we in this mode of trying to throw out new tax credits, little bits and pieces of aid and more and more choices which get overwhelming, and then saying "OK, now DO IT ALL by yourself!"  How Republican.  And toward the end, it all ties into larger anxieties in this country about security and safety.  Honestly, if everyone in this country wasn't suffering from such a high level of anxiety because they are expected to manage and pay for EVERY aspect of life all on their own (health care, child care, insurance, retirement, and on and on and on), it'd be so much harder for BushCo to constantly scare the crap out of everyone about terrorism.  And gee, what I really want on top of all this is to have to worry about my own private account for when I get old because there's no more Social Security!  More anxiety and responsibility, less joy in life!  Thanks, Bush!

This is a key paragraph (buried near the end) about the benefits offered in the French system, child care, vacation, health insurance:

I wasn't naive enough to think that economically or politically we could adapt the French system here, but I did believe that we could learn from its psychology: that if you support mothers materially, you support them emotionally. And that, in turn, translates into a much lower level of anxiety and a much greater level of mental freedom. I knew there was existential safety to be derived from a world in which structures were in place to help you take care of your children.

          •  Excellent! (4.00 / 2)

I love the article, and it is so true, they have done a great job of herding moms into sprawling suburban ranches.

I hear continuously, the comment, "Well, you're a parent, so you are..."

So much of what is pushed at moms is  "busy work".

Kids have high expectations as well, to be constantly engaged, or entertained.  The pressure comes from children as well, and the marketing the American mom in the media.

The creativity of individual talent is sucked dry by the sheer exhaustion of high expectations.  Every meeting with other parents turns into a scoresheet of childrens accomplishments, and a comparison of how many activities you can actually be involved in before you actually must take a pill.

Add to this all the fears of parenting, the potential years of therapy your child will have to go through when you are done with them (if you screw up) the fears of drugs, violence, gang activity, lost opportunities, sickness, and various other sorts of ill happenings.

It is ridiculous to think that moms can function in such a vacuum.

            •  Dads Too (none / 0)

This isn't just a "women's issue" -- it's about young families, moms, dads, kids.
I can say this as a father of two.  As a family we juggle two basically full-time jobs and a relatively active life in civil society.  It aint easy.

Honestly, a pro-natalist platform to help you families is a vote getter and a way to win over 20 and 30somethings to a life of voting Dem.

  •  Great Diary Mad! (4.00 / 15)

I worked as a volunteer for Sen. Edwards during the primaries, in NH, and got to meet Elizabeth several times, and was fortunate enough to host a dinner for her! Cate and Glenn Close also came, and it was wonderful.

She would not only make a great First Lady, she would be an excellent President! She's so honest and intelligent.  She sold me on her husband, who is just a kind, intelligent, great man.

Our country missed a great opportunity for positive growth, Edwards hammered the republethugs with the truth, effectively, and he got passed over because he's too young looking.  I guess the American people would rather have the only president with a criminal record, druggie, and the meanest spirited person we have ever seen in the white house.

Your words gave me strength and hope at a time of loss

Daily Kos :: Elizabeth Edward: Patience shall be rewarded

Elizabeth Edward's post on Democrat Underground:
... I want to share something inspiring, part of a letter from Thomas Jefferson.. Jefferson sent the letter in 1798 after the passage of the Sedition Act:

A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt. If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game where principles are at stake."

  •  Keep the Faith, Darling (4.00 / 5)

    Dear Ms. Edwards,
I was so unhappy to hear about your medical problems last November. You may be comforted to know that your plight caused me, my 2 sisters and my best friend to get mammograms. We're all hovering around the 40 mark and we've decided to keep each other honest on regular mammos and paps. This is all because of your predicament, so thanks to you being public and gracious about your very private problems you may save countless lives.

I watched your town meeting on C-SPAN and your interview on Countdown. You are the model for the ultimate political wife, a woman who is not afraid to use her brain, but smart enough to remain humble and grounded in this crazy world where anything can happen.

I live in Northern Mass and was lucky enough to hear your husband speak in NH. I brought the kids; they were extremely bored waiting around, but when we left we were so uplifted by his message. You guys are going to be the best First Family we've had in my lifetime.

I look forward to '08. I'll do anything I can to help you and your husband forward the common man's agenda. This insanity has got to stop. Your message of hope and togetherness in this country is sorely needed. I'm amazed that your husband's message rarely includes references to Jesus or God, but his message (in every sense) reflects the best and most fundamental values of the Christian religion.

    •  Faith: Meet the Press interview (4.00 / 4)

      www.oneamericacommittee.com :
      GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS

(Off Camera) I was struck by something you told "The Charlotte Observer" after the election. You said, "I wish we'd had better chances for me to talk about what my personal values are, how important my relationship with God is, how important my faith is in our day-to-day lives." Here's your chance. What do you want people to know about your relationship with God?

      JOHN EDWARDS

It's everything to me. My relationship with the Lord and my relationship with my family is everything to me, but, and I want, I think it is important when I said earlier people should know what you're made of, what you believe in, what, what you, what drives you everyday, it's an, my faith is an enormous part of my life. And that is part of who I am. But I don't believe the answer for us going forward is to invoke the Lord's name 55 times in a speech. I don't. I don't think, first of all, I think it looks political. It looks like you just, you're just moving around for politics' sake. I think people want to know who you are and what you're made of.

      GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS

(Off Camera) So how does your faith inform your politics?

      JOHN EDWARDS

It in, it informs everything I do, not just my politics. I mean, when I have hard times in my life, and, and we've, we've been blessed. My family has been blessed, but we have had had some hard times, and my relationship with the Lord is enormously important to me. Not just then, but all the time.

      GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS

(Off Camera) You know, you have been very blessed. You've had a tremendous professional success in your career, but you've also, as you point out, been visited by tragedy. Your son died. Your wife is now battling breast cancer. Do you ever feel like God is testing you?

      JOHN EDWARDS

No, I don't think God's testing me. I think there are, I think there are millions of people in this country who have been through breast cancer, just like Elizabeth is going through now. There are many parents, wonderful parents who, who have lost children. I think that this is just part of what you deal with in life and the question is not how many times you get knocked down, the question is how many times you get up and come back fighting. And at least speaking for, for the two of us, for Elizabeth and me, we're going to keep fighting.

  •  I'll add my love (4.00 / 3)

I wish you well in your fight. We need you! So get better. :)
  •  You were the reason I supported JE! (4.00 / 4)

Here in Iowa, we got spoiled seeing so much of you, your husband, and the rest of the contestants. You were the reason I jumped on the Edwards' bandwagon. All of the McMahons (the 14 kids, if you remember) have you in our thought and prayers.
    •  same here (4.00 / 3)

My husband and I wandered in on a small get-together at our local restaurant in Mizzouri during primary days and it turned out Elizabeth was hosting. I was all for John Kerry at the time and didn't know much about John Edwards. We got invited to join the group and talked for a long time with the MO JE campaign people, then listened to Elizabeth speak. She was terrific. She was absolutely sincere about what America needed and why her husband was the person for the job. And she was funny.

Well, that morning I had seen Kerry at a rally in Kansas City, and it was, well, all right. But I hadn't really connected with the veterans/firefighters/masculine display of it all. That night, after we'd met Elizabeth, we went to see JE, also in KC. It was at a funky old theater, and attended by a diverse mix, but a lot of young people. After listening to both of the Edwardses that day, I was totally convinced he was the better choice. (Still am, but that's, well... oh well.)

  •  Dear Elizabeth (4.00 / 3)

Please know that there is a whole lot of love and respect and care out here for you.  I'm glad you are blessed by such a loving family, and I wish that each day for you is better than the last.

  •  Dear Mrs. Edwards, (4.00 / 6)

I hope and pray for your full and speedy recovery.  I imagine the hardship on yourself and your family, and I am inspired by your struggle.  We have four children of various ages, and I can imagine the hardship you are facing.

Know that your continuing recovery and triumph over this is in the minds of all of us.

    With best wishes,

    Angela

  •  Dear Mrs. Edwards (4.00 / 4)

You've touched so many hearts, and they're coming back at you ten-fold.

I listened to and spoke briefly with your husband last fall in Nashua, NH. We need him. I can understand if you want to keep him closer, but we really need him, too.

Hang in with your treatment, and do what you need to get through the bad days - sleep, rest, and let others take care of you.

There are some words and prayers you may find helpful at this blog. Ann also talkes about her own treatment.  She's the friend of a friend.

    We love you.

  •  If John Edwards runs (4.00 / 6)

I think he has the best chance of winning. I plan to vote for him in the Primary. I think if John Edwards were selected in the first place we wouldnt have lost.
  •  Sending my wishes for a speedy recovery too (4.00 / 2)

    Elizabeth,
Hope you can see the tremendous support you have in this cyber community as well as all the other organizations and circles of friends who have extended their best wishes too.

You and John were a breath of fresh air in the campaign. I often thought, wow, she could easily be my neighbor. Keep being who you are, real.

  •  Thank you, Mad Ramblings... (4.00 / 2)

And Elizabeth too. My very best to her.
  •  Dear Mrs. Edwards (4.00 / 3)

You are an inspiration to us all.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

    Namaste.

  •  It must be like Spring (4.00 / 3)

in North Carolina, revitalising the earth and bringing new energy to all of us after the long dark and dreary winter. I am thrilled to know that Elizabeth Edwards is still doing what she does best--as always-- giving her insights with honesty, intelligence and clarity. She is so connected with everything, and I miss her immensely.  I hope she and John will enjoy the cherry blossoms in Washington this spring. I see a long future there for the Edwards family.

I hope you are growing stronger everyday.

Despite the setbacks, you are a lucky woman and we're even more lucky to have you with us.

Best of luck in the future.

  •  Mrs. Edwards: (4.00 / 2)

You and your health will be in my thoughts.

When I heard that you and John celebrate your anniversaries at Wendy's, I knew you were the type of people who could really relate to average Americans.  This average Joe supports both you and your husband.

  •  Ms. Edwards, I have my yellow bracelet on (4.00 / 3)

You were such a breath of fresh air during the presidential campaign.  You were definitely the draw for me.  I'm a Dean supporter but worked hard for Kerry/Dean.  You all worked hard and I wish the results were different.... but count on me, if your husband runs, I'll help again (hopefully it will be with Clark or Richardson, I think they'd go well with your husband)

  •  Dear Mrs. Edwards, (4.00 / 4)

I was on staff with your husband's campaign in Iowa and met my fiance there who was also on staff. We are getting married on August 6th. You and your family have changed my life in ways ranging the whole spectrum. You deserve the best of health and Jill and I will be praying heartily for you.
  •  Elizabeth is a goddess (4.00 / 3)

she is like a breath of fresh air with her honesty and the way she wears her love for her husband and children on her sleeve while at the same time proving that she doesn't have an artificial bone in her body.

I just read JE's book Four Trials and I was so moved by the strength of their relationship and was convinced that they are in politics for the best of reasons.  And I really think with John and Elizabeth it really is "they."

I love John, but would vote for Elizabeth any day.

As a new North Carolinian, I gladly claim them as hometowners.

  •  You're At Home (4.00 / 3)

All the best, Elizabeth - we're all getting ready for 2008.  Counting down til the end of the Bush years.........

  •  John Edwards is not a bad candidate (3.00 / 2)

but he needs more than one speech. I really liked him> he is the kind of guy that mud doesnt stick to, and I thought he would do best in a general election. But i was really disappointed with his lack of development.

It seems like he is running for President, fair to say he never stopped. Has he been talking more about ideas ? or is it all son of a mill worker?

      •  I listened to the speeches (none / 0)

I am not one for platforms, booklets or pamphlets. He just seems a little shallow. I still voted for him.

I saw him give pretty much the same speech. I know you need to polish a stump speech, but after a while, it got kind of condesceding. even mill workers wont vote for someone just because his dad was a mill worker. He failed to connect his charm to the self interest of the voter. But he didnt pretty good for a guy who had only been in politics for a few years

I was a huge supporter and volunteer, but, in the back of my mind I had some of the fears that you have.  Listening to that speech blew me away and proved to me that he was just "on message," and that he can change speeches and still be as personable, honest, and clear.

towards Edwards. He didnt beat Kerry. So something has to be wrong with his campaigning skill.

And honestly I remember more specific policies that Bush promised than Edwards. Edwards had a tendency to be condescending. Not mentioning any concrete proposals. He should work on it.

            •  Policies (4.00 / 3)

As the campaign went on, Edwards made the following points pretty clear.

              1.  Right on trade policy: free, but with labor and environmental standards -- For renegotiation of NAFTA
              2.  For National Service: Volunteer work in return for college tuition.
              3.  He wass right on tax policy: repeal all Bush taxcut, EXCEPT those for middle-class (10% rate, child deduction, marriage "penalty", etc).

In fact, Edwards was the ONLY candidate with one of those long pamphlets that were all the rage in elections past -- check the old website.

                •  Kerry just got caught in a confluence (none / 1)

that by sheer luck he got pushed a little further ahead in Iowa than Edwards. Both were surging and Kerry peaked 1st, had there been another week Edwards would have won Iowa and things would have ended up totally diffrent.

Kerry won because he won Iowa, pure and simple had Edwards won Iowa it would have been a completely diffrent outcome, campaign and ticket.

                •  Thanks (none / 0)

                  Why Edwards lost.
I canvased in Ohio and Michigan.
Kerry won because Dems felt that given the wars it made sense for Dems to not have a wimpy Dukakis factor, so they went with the vet Kerry after they saw his Vietnam ads.
Also, Kerry became the front runner after Iowa and NH and the media just began to speak of him as inevitable right as a CNN poll came out saying he would beat Bush (one came out saying the same for Edwards about three days later, but too late).  So, the bandwagon just got too huge.  Though Edwards was just 5 points away from blowing the whole thing up in Wisconsin.
Edwards would have one OK, if Clark had dropped out after NH, and would have won Tenn and close in VA if he was the only Southerner in those races.
Edwards lost out after his close second in Iowa because he was overwhelmed by 4 stories: Kerry win, Clark in now, Lieberman in now, Dean scream.  He just couldn't gain momentum going into NH.
Edwards was partly hurt by a perceived lack of experience and the idea that as VP he could give personality to Kerry.

I have more, but my wife is calling me for dinner.

you weren't really paying that much attention.  Those of us who worked for him, met him, heard him speak multiple times, and in NH, we got to size him up next to the other candidates, he was head and shoulders above everyone else, in integrity, intelligence, and a fierce desire to win, and do it for selfless reasons. He has the interest of the poor and middle classes at heart.

    of Campaign 2004.

During the VP debate, Darth Cheney said that he'd never met John Edwards.  Right after the debate, when the families of both candidates intermingled on the stage, Elizabeth went right up to Cheney and said, "You did too meet John; you sat right next to him at a prayer breakfast!"

Of course, the video of that prayer breakfast was circulating before the night was out....

  •  Greetings from beautiful, sunny Chapel Hill (4.00 / 2)

    Hi all,

There's nothing I can add to the sentiments already expressed here. I really, really am sending all of whatever positive vibes I can send to Elizabeth in the hope of a quick recovery.

I would also add that as soon as she's feeling up to it, I'd love to take her and the Senator out for barbeque at the venue of their choice. It's the least I can do for a fellow Tarheel. In fact, the only place I can seem to run into the Senator is at UNC sporting events. The first time I met him was at a basketball game immediately after he won in 1998. Those were good times...

So, anyway, best wishes and drop me an email if you're up for barbeque. And, if you happen to mention to Cate that I'm completely available... well, never mind...

    Michael C.

PS. Help a fellow get some tickets for the Dook game Sunday? It's my birthday, after all :)

Mrs. Edwards,  Millions of Americans are pulling for you to beat your illness and come back stronger than before.  We hope to see you and your husband on the political stage again and again, for the good of the country.

Just for good measure I'll ask some right wing evangelicals to pray for your speedy recovery.  It  hasn't worked for me yet, but I think they just might provide the divine help for you.  Meanwhile, you are in my family's hearts.  My mother and my wife's mother are cancer suvivors (8 years and 13 years) and you will join their ranks and have a long productive, happy, and healthy life ahead of you.

  •  Stay tough, EE. (4.00 / 2)

  •  Dear Mrs. Edwards, (4.00 / 3)

I don't pray. It strikes me as hypocritical, being at I don't believe in a god.

But I have sent out my "request to the higher power in the universe, if there is one," to keep you with us, keep you healthy. You are a singular voice of reason and hope for many of us, and I wouldn't be at all displeased to see you ensconced in the White House in January 2009.

  •  To Elizabeth (4.00 / 3)

If you read dKos every day, then you'll see this.  I sent you a funny get well card via e-mail.  In it, I joked that if John's helping you with the housework you should milk it for all it's worth.  Now I read this and it brings tears to my eyes.  I know what you're going through.  Been there myself.  It'll get better a little at a time.  In fact, sometimes I think that I'm the only one around here who even remembers that I had breast cancer.  No respect!  Just kidding.  Anyway, remember what my Aunt used to tell me.  God never puts more on your shoulders than you can carry.  I'm sure you've heard that before, but it helps when things get rough.  Hang tough!
  •  I'll just add my own wishes for good health (4.00 / 2)

I was at the Raleigh rally the day after you and John heard the news. I could tell y'all were wiped out and not up to your normal fire and verve. The next day when I heard the news, I cried for you and for your courage to go ahead and attend the rally regardless of your personal pain.

I want to thank you, and thank John for all of your efforts on behalf of the American people. I'm so glad to have you as one of my neighbors, and hope to one day run into you at Southpoint or along Franklin St. looking healthy and happy.
