Dobson's Focus on Family Recently Supported Filibuster [Update]

Tue Apr 26, 2005 at 10:05:32 AM PDT

Keith Oblermann of Countdown (the only valid cable news program) showed us again that he is not a GOP Whore last night.  He had a unique focus regarding the history of the filibuster.  Apparently the same Focus on the Family who railed against the filibuster on Justice Sunday strongly supported it in 1993 when used against appointees who were openly gay.
As a last measure of the defense of the minority, it has had many supporters over the years, like the very people of faith who sponsored yesterday`s Justice Sunday, the group Family Research Council.

Yesterday it was opposed to filibusters.  Seven years ago, it was in favor of them.  That`s when Clinton and a then-Democratic plurality in the Senate wanted a man named James Hormel to become the ambassador to Luxembourg.  Hormel, of the Spam and other meats Hormels, was gay, as the Senate minority bottled up Hormel`s nomination with filibusters and threats of filibusters, minority relative to cloture, to breaking up a filibuster.

They did that for a year and a half.  The Family Research Council`s senior writer, Steven Schwartz, appeared on National Public Radio at the time and explained the value, even the necessity, of the filibuster.

"The Senate," he said, "is not a majoritarian institution, like the House of Representatives is.  It is a deliberative body, and it`s got a number of checks and balances built into our government.  The filibuster is one of those checks in which a majority cannot just sheerly force its will, even if they have a majority of votes in some cases.  That`s why there are things like filibusters, and other things that give minorities in the Senate some power to slow things up, to hold things up, and let things be aired properly."

The Democrats could make an excellent argument against Dobson using FOF's own words.

Here's the transcript of the entire show
[Update] In the interest of accuracy, I have learned that Focus on the Family and Family Council Research are not the same thing. Because even the Fundies get them confused, Family Research Council has been nice enough to flesh out the differences. The following is from Family Research Council's FAQ page

Because FRC and Focus on the Family are both 501(c)(3) research and education organizations, we are limited in our legal ability to lobby. That is why FRC Action and Focus on the Family Action are needed. Both are 501(c)(4), education and lobbying organizations. Focus on the Family recently felt the need to create Focus on the Family Action so that Dr. Dobson himself could freely and legally lobby regarding the need to pass the Marriage Protection Amendment. However, unlike Focus Action (located in Colorado), FRC and FRC Action have a constant presence in Washington, D.C. Our staff includes a Government Affairs department that lobbies Congress and is in continual contact with the White House. FRC Action and Focus on the Family Action are working together to defend marriage, life, and other family values.

      •  sounds like a Bush tactic (4.00 / 4)

targetting people who criticize you. However, there is LOTS of hypocrisy on BOTH sides of the political spectrum. To me the BIGGEST hypocrite is ORRIN HATCH (R-competitors of Microsoft). Bill Clinton sat down and discussed potential nominations with Hatch, in charge of the Judiciary. So there was "advice" in the "advice and consent." Bush doesn't even pretend he has to listen to advice from the other side of the aisle. More egregious, Hatch switched his position on a certain rule 180 degrees from Clinton to Bush. When questioned on this flip-flop, he merely said "I was wrong before". Also, under Clinton there was the senatorial courtesy of a "blue slip". If either senator from a state where a judge was being nominated quietly objected to the nomination, the nomination was pulled. Democrats are not allowed this rule under Bush, so the fillibuster is the ONLY "weapon" Republicans have left Democrats with. And we all know how dangerous a "cornered" animal can be.

Keith Olbermann is great, and the only obvious liberal in the primetime cable news line-up. But I think the format of his show is kinda lame.

It would great to see his show in more of an O'Reilley factor format, but with more intelligence. I think he'd have a better time competing against O'Reilley if he did (MSNBC is #3 in cable news prime-time ratings).

  •  Memo to "Countdown" -- William Weld (none / 1)

Former MA Gov, William Weld was appointed by the Big Dog to be Ambas. to Mexico around 1999.

Helms blocked it...and although he didn't say it openly...he did it because Weld was against gay discrimination and because Weld had some openly Gay men working on his staff.

Someone should check and see if the Dobson, et.al. felt it was o.k. to deny Weld "an up or down" vote.  I remember how alot of wingers  went on TV etc. to support Helms' actions.

    Thanks --- terrific catch.

One thing, though: Please don't get these wingnut groups confused.  Olbermann is not talking about Focus on the Family, J. Dobson's group.  It's the Family Research Council.  The head of this one is Tony Perkins.

The point you are making is 100% valid: Go to the FRC's website and they have all of the wingnut claptrap about the evils of the filibuster.  Just don't call it Dobson's group.

I'd suggest you post an update, just to show that we watch our p's and q's here at DKos.

(By the way, I'm guessing that a little bit of snooping would probably turn up a similar quotation from Dobson back in the day.)

  •  Surprised? (4.00 / 3)

This is coming from a group of zealots who really don't give a shit about what governmental tactics are in place, or not.

This is a group which advocates the extreme rejection of one of the pillars of our country: separation of church and state.

What's a little hypocrisy on their filibuster stance in light of their "mission from God" to destroy our governmental system and institute a theocracy.

  •  Hypocrisy and Hypnosis (none / 0)

Re Dobson and his book: My sister, formerly a level headed, well educated member of the teaching profession, received Dobson's book, "Focus on the Family", as a gift. Now granted, she is a church-going born-again Christian. I consider myself a person of faith. But within 2 months of reading this  book, she had kicked her 17 year old son out of the house because she didn't want his clothes, hair and music to influence his 7 year old step-brother (her son by her current husband). When my daugher, who has a family of her own, including a 6 year old daugher and an 8 month old daugher, took him in, my sister was angry with her for helping him! She actually told us, her family, that she had hoped he would have to go cold and hungry and wear holes in the bottom of his shoes so he could appreciate all the goodness she had shown him all his life. Folks, this is a 180 degree turnaround for my sister and her views of family. I suppose I should read whatever drivel has been written in this book, because even she gave the man credit for "opening her eyes". Can anyone out there tell me how this type of teaching can even jokingly be called "family values"? I guess I have to credit my sister's weak will for being taken in by this crap, but people are buying into this stuff everywhere! Brainwashing by the Book!

    •  Don't waste your time (none / 0)

Any book that would suggest that type of behavior is not worth reading. Dobson is just another Bush supporting moral hypocrite. You notice this douchebag has a problem with everything from Teletubbies, to SpongeBob, to the filibuster, but apparently has no problem with illegal wars that unnecessarily kill civilans and American troops. That is the type of people who are influencing your sister... There is not a moral person in the bunch, only people too weak to think for themselves.
    •  You know what's wierd... (none / 0)

I was born in the late 70s and my mom read some child psychology book he wrote back then.  Apparently he wasn't insane like he is now he was just another child psychologist like Dr. Spock.

Its really funny to me because my mom was SOOO careful about properly socializing us.  She would always give me "gender neutral" toys (no cooking, cleaning, playing "house") She refused to get me a barbi b/c she didn't want to harm my body image later in life.  I should ask her about Dobson's book, I bet she has it packed in a box somewhere w/ baby stuff.  It would be interesting to look at now.
