Ever since he was so ruthlessly treated by the Bush campaign in SC, I've wondered what sort of spoiler role John McCain might play in '04.
Over the past few months, I've wondered which candidate might manage to leverage McCain support to reach out to the essential center.
A couple caveats: I am not at all fond of McCain's policies. He is thoroughly compromised by his consistent support for the GOP line. As far as I am usually concerned, membership in the GOP rules people out for my support That said, we live in unusual times.
I am of the school of thought that argues we must win at all costs in '04. Any administration is preferable to what we've got now.
A couple months ago, I saw both Clark and McCain as the potential spoilers waiting in the wings. Now that Clark is in the race (has he peaked??), what insurgent role could McCain play?
I would have thought that a Kerry/McCain ticket would be the most obvious match.
On Saturday, though, the NY Times suggested Lieberman is sending up a weather balloon:
McCain for Defense? Lieberman Likes Idea
So the question is: would McCain jump ship to unseat Bush? If so, with whom?
