(UPDATED) Warning: Pastor John is not satire! He is DEAD SERIOUS!!!

Wed May 11, 2005 at 07:44:14 AM PDT

I've seen a lot of people on Daily Kos talking about how they enjoy the satire of Pastor John.  I'm writing this diary because a brief thread that took place in Armando's diary on Reid bashers from the right this past weekend.  In the diary, this thread occurs, where Pastor John is mentioned.  Armando and I insist that Pastor John is serious.  I cite the other blogs Pastor John contributes to, and this is enough to convince even Maryscott O'Connor, the Queen of Snark.  So I figure, if I can convince Maryscott, maybe I can convince everyone else on DKos.

Pastor John is not the satirical genius you all think he is.  I imagine he is what Pastor Dan would be like in Bizarro World.

I started off my `research' by visiting Pastor John's blog, Fighting the Homosexual Agenda.  At first, I couldn't tell whether it was serious or satire.  A post like the following one can easily be interpreted either way:

what is a liberal?

sometimes i am asked, what is a liberal? well, i am here to tell you. the first thing you should know is that liberals are tricky, like leprechauns and squirrels. do not lend them money because they will spend it on raunchy nickelodeons and anal lubricants, and then they will not pay you back, instead they will give the money to the federal government or to a cuban book club. this happened to me many times before i was the wise man i am today. though most liberals are homosexual in some way, some are bisexuals. the bisexual is one of the liberals' strongest recruiting tools. bisexuals are constantly on a mission to steal good christian husbands and wives away from their spouses. they will lure you with promises of threesomes with famous hollywood liberal communists, but then they will take you down the path of bestiality - there is nothing a liberal likes more than to coerce a good conservative man or woman into sexual relations with a horse or large dog. and usually liberals will invite their liberal judge friends to watch. and then the trial lawyers and the masons will videotape the whole thing and sell it to children. you might think i exaggerate, but today i am going easy on the liberals, believe it or not. tomorrow maybe i will reveal the full extent of their evil demonry.

HAHAHA!  I see why you think he's a satirist.  Either he is the funniest man on the planet, or he is more evil than Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson and Tom DeLay combined.  But let's check it out to see which is the case.

On the right hand of the screen is a link to his profile.  When I clicked it, I didn't find the bio was hoping for, but instead there was a list of Pastor John's other blogs.   Pastor John is the sole writer on Fighting the Homosexual Agenda, but he is also a contributing blogger on Valley Sense (with "Bogus Fishbarrel", "Old Denmark" and "La Orilla") and Kilgore for Governor (with "Patriotic Conservative" and "Southside Virginian").  Let's take a look at Pastor John's partner's in crime:

  • Southside Virginian- profile lists him as posting on Kilgore for Governor and nothing else
  • Bogus Fishbarrel - profile lists him as posting on Valley Sense and nothing else.
  • Old Denmark - has kept his profile private (wonder what he's hiding...).
  • La Orilla - has a profile with a bit more personal information.  He lists his favorite books as "The Dream and the Nightmare" and "The Tragedy of American Compassion".  According to Amazon, they are both written with conservative points of view.  La Orilla is also listed as a blogger for Commonwealth Watch, along with Abitmorered, BA Baracus, Confused Calamity Jane, DefConVA, Walt Ball, Mr. Cushing, NoMoreKaine, Poli Amateur, and ValleyWatchDog.  None of those names sound snarky to me.  Abitmorered has a profile describing himself as a "Middle/Right "red" Republican."  None of the other Commonwealth Watch bloggers have other blogs or mention anything in their profiles that would provide evidence about their political slants.
  • Patriotic Conservative - Now this one, I think is funny.  He lists "The Passion of the Christ" as one of his favorite movies.  Also, it says he has two blogs he operates independently.  The first is My Everyday Life (which he subtitles "Nothing in particular, just the things that go on in my life, day-to-day") is a forum for whining.  Here is the most recent example...

Conflicted, confused

So incredibly torn right now. It feels wrong to go out and "look" for a girlfriend, when I know that God has a plan in store for me. Yet, I'm tired of waiting. I look around and see the happiness and joy in my friends' lives and I become painfully aware of my singleness. Some people would tell me to enjoy being single while I can, and I have. But I want someone to love, to hold close and tell her I love her, to snuggle with and cry with, to share my dreams and secrets with. I feel like I'm passing up my opportunity if I keep waiting, as God would have me do. I know that He remains true to his promises, but the wait is becoming unbearable.

http://everydayrudy.blogspot.com/2005/05/conflicted-confused.html

Seems pathetic, but not satirical.

His other blog is Musings of a Young Conservative, subtitled "A hardcore independent conservative lets loose his opinions on the general public".  In it, he rants about liberals denouncing the Iraq War, cites Margaret Thatcher's support for John Bolton, but then again he rants against REAL ID, too.  Patriotic Conservative seems to be a Libertarian/Conservative who throws in with the Bush administration and Republican Congress on most, but not all, instances.

These bloggers all appear to be serious and conservative.  I doubt any of them would blog with someone they suspected was a liberal who was actually satirizing them.

Ok, back to Pastor John's blogs...

Kilgore for Governor is not an especially noteworthy blog.  There is no satire on this site; Pastor John and the other bloggers support the Republican Ed Kilgore over the Democrat Tim Kaine.  That is their prerogative.  Of course, I hope Kaine wins and Warner heads over to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, but I digress...

Perusing the comments on Fighting the Homosexual Agenda, Valley Sense and Kilgore for Governor, it appears that most of the comments fall under two categories.  The first is the group of liberals who are incensed with Pastor John's hate speech.  The other category are comments by Pastor John's co-bloggers, discussing the evils of liberalism and homosexuality, while making sure to pat themselves on the backs.

Then there was this one...

i demanded an abortion of hillary clinton. i found that it wasn't as available on demand as i would have liked.

http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=12621490&postID=111541912449529313

Even Patriotic Conservative thought that went too far.  Pastor John admitted he was taken in by his anger.  Isn't that a sin, Pastor Dan?

I will provide one more example that I feel demonstrates Pastor John is not satire, and if you still don't believe me, then enjoy his `satire'.  Pastor John displays the following post as one of his personal favorites:

what the illegal immigrants really want: your children

illegal immigrants are arriving on the shores of virginia every day. some come in tire tubes and others come in shuttle boats driven by liberals. they're infesting our countryside and damaging the purity of this nation.

but few people really know the true danger of illegals, because the liberal media doesn't want to tell you. they're floating up on their tire tubes towards the ocean shore and snatching up children. i recently read a report on newsmax.com that told me that this was a problem especially in new orleans where these free loaders are floating up from mexico, stealing children, then trading them on the black market for illegal drugs and big sombreros.

this rice and beans crowd needs to be locked up. it's time we took a real stand and threatened military action against mexico if they don't stop sending these illegals our way. but it won't happen soon because the liberal media won't tell you the whole story.

And what is Pastor John's response?

Pastor John said...
anonymous that site is obviously a hack parody from someone who hates jesus. do not confuse this site for that.

It seems clear that "Anonymous" thinks that Pastor John is satire.  Pastor John's response makes clear that he is not amused by satire that makes fun of the right.  The site "Anonymous" references, "Jesus' General: A 10 on the Manly Scale of Absolute Gender", is true satire.  In the top right corner of the site is a picture of the Buddy Jesus wearing a military helmet and standing in front of an American flag.

To be thorough, I sent an email to the address Pastor John lists on his blog.  Here is my email...

I have heard about your blog from some of the people who read Daily Kos.  They seem to think that you are writing satire and not serious.  Can you please let me know if this is the case?

Also, are you actually a pastor or is that a joke?  If you are, what is your denomination and what church do you preach in?

I appreciate your response.

Sincerely,

Muboshgu

As of this moment, I have not received any response.  And I don't expect I will.  If he does respond, I will post it as an update. Update [2005-5-20 10:31:15 by Muboshgu]: Here is his response...

I never saw him as a satirist.
In fact, several of my posts described reasons I thought he could be suffering from mental illness due to his paranoia which is present in so many of his posts. If it is satire, then he is very talented. But I tend to think that unfortunately, he may be serious and actualy quite delusional. As his posts go way over the top of anything I read from the religious right.

  •  Intent of PJ is unknown (none / 0)

I would not, even with all this eveidence leaning toward him being serious, presume to know the intent of Pastor John. Only GOd can know what is in his heart. We are left to judge his acts, which are, extremely humorous and quite deleterious to the hate-filled homophobe cause.
He falls, perhaps, in the catgory of unintended parody.

Whenever somebody mkaes their wn pet cause look so completely insane, it only turns undecideds and potential leaners away. This guy needs to be publicized as the true face of those who oppose equal rights for gays and lesbians.

  •  I don't buy it (none / 0)

Your argument seems to be "satire is supposed to amuse, but he writes many things that aren't amusing, so I conclude it's not satire."

An alternate explanation would be that he behaves like a bad caricature of a wingnut in order to scare people off.  The intended reaction is something like "if this lunatic supports Kilgore, I sure don't want any part of that."  Under that interpretation, it all falls apart if he "breaks character" at some point.

Truth is stranger than fiction though, so who knows.

    •  Point taken (none / 0)

We can never truly know what's going on inside his head, especially if he doesn't respond to my email.  He seems to be serious from my point of view, and I hoped to at least bring some evidence to support the point that he may not be kidding.

    •  Andy Kaufman (3.75 / 4)

His blog is "in character" as it were. OF COURSE he's going to have links to conservative sites. That's what his character would do.

He's not trying to amuse, he's attempting to provoke. He is a seriously pissed off person, and he has succeeded in provoking quite a few people. Your selection of quotes was, shall we say, selective. I could pull some stuff (like his mother's fatal attack of athlete's foot) that undercut your thesis.

Satire's not always supposed to make you laugh. Sometimes it's supposed to make you want to throw stuff at the walls. I remain a fan.

      •  Absolutely. Definitely satire. (none / 1)

Andy Kaufman is the perfect analogy.

If you ever saw the standup routine in which he battles a merciless heckler (actually his writing partner) or the guest appearance on "Fridays" in which he caused a sketch to go so horribly awry that it resulted in a fistfight on the air.  Kaufman never, ever winked at the audience.

I get the same vibe off of Pastor John.  Frankly, I think the whole thing is just hilarious.  He never winks at the reader.  You cannot see the seams.

I try not to look at it at work, because it never fails to make me laugh hysterically.  I actually laugh hysterically, like a crazy person.

An admirable investigative effort, Muboshgu, but... nah.  I'm not buying it.  I think Pastor John is just a brilliant satirist.

I didnt see an option that I agreed with in your poll:  I never thought Pastor John was satire, I always thought he was a wacko bigot.

Great diary... helping to put the "he's only harmless satire" notion to rest.

But even if people around think he's satire, it still neitralizes his hate and marginalizes him to the fringes of insanity.

I've been subtley assured sometimes that they are satire. I guess the best satire is reality or satire that's so close to the line that one can't tell the difference.

I'll bet he HAS had a hard time sitting patiently at home waiting for God to deliver him a girlfriend.  It might be especially hard for him if God plans for him to forgo earthly pleasures and to commit his life to God's work.

Most people who are this crazy do not throw so many of their crazy ideas into the public sphere. But look at all the inane nonsense tossed around by guys like Robertson, Coulter, Horsley, George W. Bush about weighty issues.

So here comes pastor John with an ongoing inner dialogue about how a crazy person thinks. It was funny at first, but now its just sad, sad, sad. It gives me a horrifying lump in my stomach to think what this poor guy must have gone through to get to this point.

I won't be laughing at him anymore.

    •  Yes Tony! (none / 0)

I have to agree. I tend to think there is a good chance he could very well be Paranoid Schizophrenic.
Some, even with taking their medication regularly, have some very paranoid delusions. Others do quite well on the right type of medication and if taken religiously ( ah no pun intended). And it is not unusual for them to be Obsessed with a fictional
enemy. In this case, he fears that gay people are  criminals trying to poison him and that immigrants are kidnapping our children and other such psychotic  paranoid, ideas.

My sister in law is Paranoid Schizophrenic and they finally found the medication that is right for her. But she has one fixed delusion, that while under a lot of stress, comes out. It does not affect her everyday functioning enough to make medication changes or hospitalization..she is convinced  German Nazis tried to kill her as a baby and young child. She never lived in Germany.
      She was born after WWII.

I am not sure, he may have fooled us all. Someone who knows him personally and talks to him off the blog might be the only ones who know the truth.

    no banking for homosexuals
it is a time for rejoicing. it has just come to my attention that the fda will ban homosexuals from using banks. the reason for this is that homosexuals like to hang out in banks so that they can steal people's checkbooks and use them to send checks to nambla and the masons. finally the communists in the fda get something right. though they have limited the restriction to certain banks called "sperm" banks. start writing letters so that we can get the homosexuals out of our banks completely. a homosexual with a bank account is a dangerous thing.

than building a connection between Masons, NAMBLA, homosexuals and the banking industry.  Or maybe not to everyone.  I personally like to tie in the Masons, James Buchanan and the murder of John Paul I.  If you were to hear some of my "conspiracy" theories around these parties without knowing me you may not think I am mentally stable. My apologies to any Masons out there but secret societies are ripe for this type of satire.

I don't know if PJ is a satirist, clinically disturbed or just over the top.  As several have pointed out there is no way of knowing without knowing the person. With that said, I do find what I have read to be humorous in its absurdity.

  •  I feel relatively confident (4.00 / 4)

that Pastor John is a parody. I have never seen him make a single serious/hard-hitting argument for his alleged point of view. There is an obviously jokey and buffoonish tone to his writing. You haven't provided any evidence that he writes the same kinds of things on other sites.

"It seems clear that "Anonymous" thinks that Pastor John is satire.  Pastor John's response makes clear that he is not amused by satire that makes fun of the right."

#1 He stays in character. #2 I am perfectly willing to believe he really is religious. The post about looking for a girlfriend says nothing to me about his politics.

When Pastor John trolled Daily Kos that day, he seemed to know who Armando was and that poking fun at Armando was a community sport (in one post he hilariously claimed to be Armando). This made me think he is a regular Kos reader or poster. Even a moderate Republican would have plenty of motive to mock the far right. This guy is having a good time and I congratulate him on doing a nice job.

To me, the real question to this, should really be just that -- in any other westernized 'democracy' this would be easily considered laugh out loud hilarious -- either crazy or satirist -- he's fucking funny.

Take a look at the kilgor3gov blog -- the patriotic cons seems pretty genuine in his support for kilgore -- then take a look at the PJ posts ... if You think that the PJ posts are helping the kilgore4gov agenda, well -- either i should become even more afraid of living here in VA or concerned about the 'mental/emotional balance' of some here on KOS

overall, i have to agree with an earlier post that likened PJ to andy kaufmann -- and for me, it never really mattered whether i thought andy was either a nutter or brilliant -- he was hilarious

whichever side PJ is "REALLY" on, it doesn't matter -- he does more harm for the rightwing side than for the leftwing --> unless VA and the US are so totally fucked as to be almost irreparable -- which i am not quite willing to accept yet

Okay on this blog, I learned from PJ that HUD requires a commitment to homosexuality in order for employment; that HUD offers free daycare which is a sure sign of socialism; and that he once applied for a HUD grant to build a "listening station to focus laser beams at every Unitarian Church on the east coast.  In addition, he "proves" that white people were in North America first because a human foot print was found within a dinosaur footprint.  His justification was that native americans wore silly shoes and never went barefoot.  Oh and this find disproves evolution as well.

I don't know folks, mark me on the side of satire with an acknowledgement of the possibility of mental dsiturbance - although I think his writing is too lucid to "prove" that.
