An excerpt from a NYTimes article:
While most people in politics, including many in his own camp, believe he must win a state on Feb. 3 -- or Feb. 7 at the very latest -- Dr. Dean said repeatedly Wednesday that he did not need to post a victory, only to keep amassing enough delegates to be the last man standing, or to stage a challenge at the party's convention this summer.
In other words, Dean is willing to accept seconds and thirds in primaries and caucuses, and then challenge for the nomination in Boston.
Does this strike anyone as cynical? I mean, Dean has made it clear that this battle is all about him, and that he feels he has been annointed, by someone, somewhere, to be the party's nominee.
I would gladly sit out the election if Dean's strategy were to somehow come in fruition. I doubt it will, as he will lose every primary next week, thereby setting him far back in the pack.
Now, don't mistake me for your average DailyKos Deaniac- I won't sit out the election if anyone but my man (Edwards) is nominated, but Dean's developing plan smacks me as particularly harmful to himself, his cause, and the party. He's like Ralph Nader in his belief in his own self-importance.
