Beatty for Governor? He unloads on Arnold today at Berkeley

Sat May 21, 2005 at 09:24:49 PM PDT

From a story on the SF Chronicle website, which is slated to appear on the front page of tomorrow's newspaper:

Beatty unleashes riff on governor

Warren Beatty apparently gave a commencement speech at UC Berkeley today, ripping Gov. Schwarzenegger a new one for his stupid attacks on teachers and nurses, and "threatening" to run for governor if Schwarzenegger goes through with this special election this fall. I read the whole story twice and I'm still not sure if he's serious, so take it for what you will.

Academy Award-winning actor-director Warren Beatty delivered a devastating critique of Arnold Schwarzenegger at a UC Berkeley commencement Saturday, and refused to rule out a Democratic run for governor -- saying that he would "think about it" if Schwarzenegger continues to endorse "a totally unnecessary special election."

During his speech, Beatty lambasted the GOP governor for "bullying labor and the little guys'' such as California nurses and teachers while embracing "the reactionary right wing'' in pursuit of his agenda.

Beatty told 80 graduates, their families, and hundreds of others who gathered on the campus lawn to hear him, that while he "didn't want to'' run for governor, "I'd do a hell of a lot better job than he's done.''

Beatty, who has starred in and/or directed such films as "Reds," "Bulworth" and "Shampoo," publicly chastised Schwarzenegger for choosing "bombastic marketing'' over serious public policy, saying the former actor has tacked so far to the right, he no longer resembles the man who ran for the office in the first place.

"We are not the governor's dumbbells," Beatty said to applause and laughter. "It's not fooling anybody for him to be running around raising money ... from rich Republicans all over the country who hope that they can get this reactionary stuff started in California."

He then asked why the state needs "a totally unnecessary $70 million extra election in November, when we're going to have another one anyway in June. That's nothing but a strategy to distract attention from the failure to deal honestly with the budget."

While the governor's office dismissed Beatty, Michael Nacht, the dean of the influential public policy school [UC Berkeley Goldman School of Public Policy], said the actor was chosen for the honor of the address because of his credentials, which included being a founding member of the Progressive Majority and the Center for National Policy, a board member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and a longtime activist in Democratic politics who has worked on every presidential campaign since Robert Kennedy's.

The tough words from Beatty come as the governor is outside the state -- this weekend in Florida, Texas and Illinois -- attempting to raise millions from GOP loyalists like Texas oilman T. Boone Pickens for a special election which looks increasingly likely in November.

Beatty commented on the two Democrats who have already jumped into the governor's race, saying, "I think [State Treasurer] Phil [Angelides] is terrific, I think [State Controller] Steve [Westly] is terrific," and added that there are "quite a number" of Democrats who would improve on Schwarzenegger's record.

"I don't think Democrats are going to need a famous movie actor," he said.

But on Saturday, asked what he would do if party leaders pressed him to run, Beatty smiled and said:

"I would think about it."

Go read the whole story, it's quite interesting. I had no idea he'd been involved in politics to such a serious degree. I really don't like the idea of celebrity politics, but seeing as how that's where the game is now, maybe we'd be stupid not to get him in there. My husband's more cynical about politics than I am, but interestingly his opinion about Beatty running: "Great! He'd be better than Schwarzie." And yeah, he would be.

  •  Ha (none / 0)

How perfect that Anhuld is outside the state trying to get money from a Texas oilman! I'm not from CA, but I like what I've heard of Angelides.
    •  Yeah, I like Angelides too (none / 1)

I like Angelides too, but he's got a long ways to go in terms of getting his name recognition where it needs to be, and getting a fire lit under the grassroots.  I really hope he's doing stuff that I'm not hearing about, because I'm not hearing much.

Isn't that hilarious that Schwarzenegger is begging for money from Texans? Jesus christ on a pogo stick, this guy just takes the cake. He's now spent as much time out of state in his eighteen-month term as Davis did during his entire first four-year term. And now he wants to spend $80 million for a special election we don't need and can't afford. If it wasn't so goddamn infuriating I'd be laughing.

  •  I agree with Warren (none / 1)

the Democrats really, really don't need a famous movie actor to run. But then again, it might get my sister who lives in Northern CA to get out and vote. Something I learned in January she has never ever done. Sheesh, she is almost 40.
    •  Wow, that's hard to believe (none / 0)

It's hard to believe, but thanks for the little eye-opener. I thought everyone in northern California was required to vote. :) So you think Beatty would get her to vote? Would it just be the celebrity factor?

      •  not really sure (none / 0)

but she was weaned on those damn movie magazines mom was hooked on and that is a lot of her conversation. It was depressing but I hadn't seen her in ten years so I pretty much let it go other than expressing my dismay. Her daughter will be eligible to vote in 2006 and 2008 and I do plan on trying to get her to set a better example. Just didn't want to approach it at the time because it made me so crazy at the time.
  •  He would make a fine governor. (none / 0)

But that might not be a good strategic decision to run. He might split the Progressive vote, leaving DINO Westley to face Ahnold.
    •  I don't see Westly going anywhere with this (none / 1)

I've heard he's got a ton of his own money he's putting into the race, but I just don't see him getting that much support. His name recognition has got to be terrible, and in California even more so than in other places, it's all about the name recognition, because this state is just too freaking BIG to campaign in.

I don't think Angelides has much more name recognition, but he does have the benefit of a history of speaking out against Arnold's budget and financial policies, and at least he's got an interesting and memorable name when people do hear it. If Angelides is going to win this though, he needs to start reaching out to more grassroots groups and lighting fires under them. Haven't got any sense that that's happening yet.

P.S.: If anybody from his campaign is reading (heh), he could, for example, appear with some of the ten thousand nurses and teachers protesting Arnold's policies next Wednesday in Sacramento. He could offer to appear at a DFA Meetup, or a couple of DFA Meetups, or LOTS of DFA Meetups; my local one, the Oakland DFA Meetup, hosted our local councilwoman once, so I'm sure they'd be thrilled to host Angelides. He could appear on Air America. He could offer to be interviewed by Kos or a Kossack diarist. He could post his own diary here and actually respond to people's questions.

  •  Bullworth is Back! (none / 1)

Resurrected from the dirt nap and running for governor.

I might just move back to California.

  •  At Least the Women Beatty Groped (4.00 / 2)

    Wanted him to.
  •  Beatty and politics (none / 0)

You are probably too young to remember Warren and his sister during the McGovern campaign.  They were everywhere.  I even got to pick Shirley up at the airport in my MGB.  She was a good sport.
    •  How cool is that? (none / 0)

Yep, a little before my time, but that's a cool story. I have to say I was thrilled to hear he has such long-standing credentials in the party. That would put a lot of the grassroots people more at ease, should he choose to run.

  •  I'm an ABA voter (none / 0)

Anybody But Arnold. I don't care who it is: Beatty, Angelides, etc. Hell, even Gary Coleman is looking good about now.

I swear I remember Arnold saying during the recall that he wasn't going to run for a second term. Did I just dream this or did he change his mind?

    •  I don't remember hearing that (none / 0)

I don't remember hearing him ever say that, but that doesn't necessarily mean you were dreaming. If you find a quote, do post it. The thing is, that he's raising money for his warchest at a pretty good clip. I find it hard to believe he'd be doing all that if he didn't plan on running again. And I bet Rove is practically requiring him to run again, because he's just too good a fundraising draw for all those other Republican politicians out there in non-California-land.
