My LTTE "Don't Blame Newsweek"

My LTTE about the Newsweek pseudoscandal was published in the local Durham paper yesterday.  It starts by debunking the rumors, and then dives into the accountability pot-kettle-black issue.

The LTTEs have been on average leaning more and more progressive lately - a very encouraging sign

Don't blame Newsweek

The hue and cry about the Newsweek story on Quran defilement left me shaking my head. First of all, the only error that the Newsweek reporter made was in quoting an anonymous source to say an upcoming Pentagon report would confirm the abuse. The fact that U.S. guards defiled the Quran is not in dispute, and has been corroborated by numerous sources. The Pentagon had a chance to quash the story when Newsweek ran it by them, but they made no objection.

And the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the riots were due to political infighting in Afghanistan -- the Newsweek report was just the most convenient showpiece for the Afghan warlords at the time.

And let's talk accountability. The White House is blaming the violence on Newsweek, and calling for them to take responsibility for deaths caused by their reliance on faulty intelligence. Sound familiar? If the White House wants to talk about deaths caused by faulty intelligence, then we've got over 1,600 Americans whose mothers want to know why they died in Iraq. Who is responsible for leading us into Iraq based on faulty intelligence? Where's the accountability?

The timing of this manufactured outrage is suspicious, given the increasing momentum of the questions raised by the leaked British intelligence memo last week. It's been called the smoking gun that proves President Bush deliberately twisted the facts to fit his preconceived desire to go to war in Iraq. Where's the outrage over his lack of accountability?
