Watching Coulter on the Late, Late Show

Tue May 24, 2005 at 12:15:09 AM PDT

Crawling out of the shadows where her ilk lurks, Ann Coulter showed up on the Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight. I've been crushing on Ferguson (it's the accent) for a couple weeks and staying up late to watch the show. Imagine my displeasure to hear his guest list tonight and my utter horror as they hugged and kissed (on the cheek) when she appeared on stage. Squick! Where would this interview lead?
Well, it led to Coulter making an ass of herself. Did you expect anything else?

Ferguson (or Craig, as I call him in my fantasies ;) announced that he didn't want to talk politics, he wanted to talk about her and began to ask questions about her upbringing. She talked about her "minority" (being raised in a stable, white, Christian family--though I'd ask, if it was so stable, why's she so anorexic?) childhood in Connecticut then Craig asked what led her to be so angry. "Who said I was angry?" What followed was a typical Coulter scree on liberals and Bill Clinton. "Ooh, do you know Bill Clinton?" Craig asked excitedly. More scree and disgusting innuendo. She was much better behaved on Leno's show a few weeks ago and I wonder if she thought this being late, late night that she could get away with more--"Bill Clinton's interested in anything with a mouth," she kept remarking. Sick girl. Later, Craig asked her why she was so interested in Clinton. She feigned surprise that he would think that. "Well, you brought him up," he said. She denied it. "I didn't want to talk politics, I wanted to talk about you," he reminded her. She claimed he had said something that made it pertinent, which of course is pure Coulter delusion. I'm not sure what he was expecting but you could tell it was dawning on him that he had a nut job on stage with him.

Next, Craig expressed his surprise that she was a Grateful Dead fan and she got riled about stereotyping conservatives. Her accusations were hard to follow, but she condemned Craig as a liberal because he was on CBS. "I'm from another country," he explained. "I'm just trying to be a good American. I'm taking the test." Again, attempting to turn the conversation away from politics, he asked her if she ever smoked marijuana while following the Dead. She said only passively. He asked her if she thought it should be legalized. She said not. What about the Dead? They obviously were smoking; where would their music have been without it? Apparently, it was fine with her to do it as long as you don't get caught but if you were then you should be prosecuted. Isn't this moral relativism?

Craig asked her if she'd thought about running for office. "Oh, no," she sneered. "I don't care for that false congressional collegiality." What's that, Craig wondered? "Oh, you know--'my esteemed friend, Senator Kennedy!'" "Ooh, you're friends with Senator Kennedy?" Craig asked.

I'm happy to say the interview didn't end as cordially as it began, a brisk handshake replacing the cozy hello. Craig sat back and let Coulter hang herself with her own self-importance, only adding a jab of wry wit where needed.

Sigh.

  •  that sounds pretty good. (none / 1)

as you tell it, this guy seemed to know how to work her without letting on that he was doing so.  nice.
    •  I think (4.00 / 2)

he just wasn't buying what she was selling. He's actually a pretty good interviewer from what I've seen. He steers conversation well and gently mocks the obvious attempts to be canned or cliched. But maybe I'm seeing what I want to see. ;)

He is like a breath of fresh air, fresh Scottish air. Like you, maybe it is the accent, but I like him too.
      •  No,this was real (none / 0)

She seemed nervous when she came in,not as confident as I would've expected. Her attempt of humor failed miserably. She didn't have anything interesting to say and he blocked her nastyness with skill.

I have to say 'Craig' has grown on me in the last few weeks,he can be quite witty.

      •  Although I seldom watch late-nite TV...... (none / 0)

.....I've come to like Craig Ferguson. He had a wonderful commentary on the death of Johnny Carson (said he had just come over to the US during the 80's, and found him a good primer on American life). And he does what Larry King does: relax a guest so much that he can coax them into revealing more about themselves that on a shout-fest (when everyone is on guard, ready with scripted lines).

So I'm not surprised that he helped bring out some of Ms. C's worst characteristics.

I'm also glad no one used the "c" word to describe her here; with all due respect to the intrepid Maryscott, some words just shouldn't be used in public (especially by men). In private, though, is a different story   ;-)

        •  To be honest, (none / 0)

he had Mike Huckabee, Arkansas gov, on a few weeks ago and I came away liking the guy. I wouldn't trust him in politics, but he seemed like a genuinely nice guy. They talked fishing and weight problems. It was a good interview. Ms. C missed a golden opportunity to appear human, but apparently that's not something she's interested in.

    it hurts.

  •  You Guys All Missed A (4.00 / 3)

priceless interview with that dog on Canadian TV with a Canadian interviewer.

    Went like this -

She's all snarky because she's pissed that Canada didn't support Monkeyboy's war. So she says:  "I don't know what happened to you people, you were with us in Vietnam."

Canadian Interviewer sez:  "We didn't support the war and we didn't send troops."

She sez:  "Oh, yes, you did."

He sez:  "No, we didn't send any troops to Vietnam."

    She sez:  "Yes you did."

He sez:  "No. We did not send any troops to Vietnam."

    She sez: "Are you sure?"

    He sez:  "Yes."

She sez: "Well, I'll check. I'll have to get back to you on that."

She, of course, never did, even though they called her to find out if she had checked.

Terminal stupidity?  I rest my case.

    Whattaskank.

  •  The Grateful Dead?!?! (none / 1)

I was just enjoying a lovely West Coast '72 show, and then I had to go read this diary.  I will now have to lie awake all night pondering the fact that not only do Ann Coulter and I have something in common, it's the good ole Grateful Dead.

I think I hear Jerry spinning...

Her lack of collegiality makes her unqualified for a place in civilization much less congress.

stereotyping conservatives, but in the next breath she's stereotyping Craig for being a liberal because he's on CBS?

    anymore?

Why do they keep bringing him up?  What is their damage with this Clinton thing?

    It's so bloody childish -

Rightie "Yeah well Bill Clinton was a degenerate serial adulterer"

Leftie "Thousands of children in this country are without health care"

Rightie "Yeah well Bill Clinton ruined the reputation of this nation with his sexual antics"

Leftie "Millions of people in this country don't have access to proper mental health care"

Rightie "Clinton's wife is a controlling shrew"

  •  Afterthought (none / 0)

Great WAPO article on Craig (it doesn't qualify as stalking until I buy the plane ticket) and his turn as talk show host. I am, apparently, not alone as Faye Dunaway revealed on a recent appearance she is part of...

a certain demographic: People who, perhaps through a fog of Tylenol PM, have developed a teensy, weird crush on Ferguson.

    So there.

Clicking around a little led me to the Freeper live thread from the show last night which was endlessly amusing. The mob there is apparently split on her appearance, one faction complaining about her bullying and mouthiness while another decried liberals being MEAN to St. Ann. Too funny. A poster insisted several times over the course of the thread that the first words out of Craig's mouth were, "Why are you so angry?" Uh, no, what show was s/he watching? He was gracious and flirtatious. It was gross. I did feel better finding out that local freepers had organized to fill the studio audience last night. It explains the approval that poured forth for some of Coulter's unsavory remarks. As one freeper pointed out, though, her behavior pretty much silenced them by the end of her interview. It was awkward and, as someone pointed out above, poisonous.
