Radicals are not Consevative Christians

Mon May 09, 2005 at 10:44:57 AM PDT

Why are we letting the Radical Republicans co-opt us into accepting the religious radical right as Conservative Christians?  They are no such thing!  They are a radical doomsday cult expecting the rapture to take righteous fanatics into a naked ascension with their clothes neatly folded where their ascension begins.  The series of best selling books called "Left Behind" is at the core of these crazy beliefs that are not conservative at all.  They believe there is no future to conserve.
The Left Behind scenario has a very short shelf life in historical terms.  Now these fanatics are successfully highjacking US policy, media, politics and education.  In a generation or so when the world is still here in whatever shambles they may have left it without discernible loss of the righteous to rapture their children are going to have to return to reality.

  •  This reminds me of the title (4.00 / 2)

         of another recent diary...
    •  You know, (none / 1)

you can search for a topic, write your diary, and miss a near simultaneous one without triggering the diary police.

Just think how proud you'll be to tell your kids how you voted this year.

      •  OOps, (4.00 / 2)

I guess you can't miss it if you wrote it. I call a mulligan on my comment.

Just think how proud you'll be to tell your kids how you voted this year.

      •  Yes, that's true. (none / 0)

you can search for a topic, write your diary, and miss a near simultaneous one without triggering the diary police.

It's also true that the same diarist with an interest in selling conservative christianity to the 'liberals' can post two diaries on the same topis trying to distance 'conservative christians' from the radical christian right.

The problem is the social agenda of all conservative christians and the added fact that they've undoubtedly formed an alliance religiously justifying biblically ordained and unworkable gender roles and vicious attacks against the GLBT community. How thrilling. How spiritual.

        •  There are conservtive christians (none / 0)

and then there are the doomsday freaks.

I have problems with their religions, however, there are people who would like to consider themselves "conservative christians" whow don't want to be part of a cult. Hell there are cultists who don't want to be considered as part of a cult. The Doomsday Cult framing is, therefore, very effective at pasting a negative conotation upon the filibuster fight, and other freaky things, that might draw support from the religous right.  I all for exploring that.

I do not think this hurts gay rights, because you as divide the conservatives they become weaker. I don't care how you divide them, at least not yet.

Neither the CC's or the DdC's will support gay rights  right now. I just want them weakened as much as possible.

Just think how proud you'll be to tell your kids how you voted this year.

  •  I think you're (none / 1)

    absolutely right to reframe them.

Attacking "conservative christians" makes a lot of people defensive.

Attacking a "doomsday cult' is the perfect framing. Now, some people may agree with the doomsday cult, but far fewer than those people who identify themselves as conservative christians.

Now, we just have to appropriately define the "doomsday cult" to include the filibuster freaks.

Just think how proud you'll be to tell your kids how you voted this year.

  •  Delete one.. (4.00 / 4)

    of your two redundant diaries.

I think you meant to edit the original and wound up instead of posting a second one.

Since your limit is two, you may want to delete one of these.
